When I was a child this is what it was really like. Everyone knew everyone else and their business, a street was a community. When there was a death two of the ladies would go around the street taking a collection for a wreath. Funny it was always the women who took charge of these things, the men kept out of it except to give condolences to the bereaved. There was always a battleaxe in the street, ours was Mrs Dabs. She had none of Ena's redeeming qualities and the kids hated her.

I really loved this episode= classic - from tears (Christine's regret) to laughter (Ena and the doctor) - just fabulous - you care about these characters - unlike today - that storyline with Leeann and that child - God forgive me, i couldn't care less - and they have dragged it on for an eternity.

I abandoned watching modern Corrie around 10 years ago, when the latest serial killer/sex abuse storyline dragged on far too long. And they had made the once fabulous and feisty Rita into a sweet, simple-minded, little old lady - which was never her character! She should have become another fearsome Ena - but with glamour!

The actress that played Mrs. Hardman, died in 2000. The actress that played Christine, died in the mid 1980's. I've been watching Corrie for 50 years, but I never watched the 60's episodes. I'm doing that now, and enjoying it. I wouldn't watch today's Corrie, if you paid me. Cheers!

Sherbet Fountain Thanks. That probably explains Christine's guilt afterwards for thinking May was just putting it on.Its also probably why, in Ena's words, May 'stood in the middle of Coronation Street screaming blue murder' before she was taken to hospital. But it begs the question-what sort of hospital would discharge May without even considering a brain tumour? I know medicine was less advanced then, but they shouldn't have just ruled it out-which was why Christine thought nothing was wrong! As the doctor said to Ena-when someone's in hospital, their life is the hospital's responsibility!

It was live only for the first three months. During that period they would do the Friday episode live and then immediately record an episode for the following Wednesday. However even the recorded episodes would have been done as if they were live. Stopping and starting the tape was frowned on unless there was a serious mistake.

Good call! They'd have had privies out the back, I guess that's what the yard was for. But they must have had proper loos, showers etc fitted years later, tho it's hard to work out where they put them. They were 2 bed houses & all very small rooms. Makes me laff that they would have 3 or more people residig - where did they all sleep??? Like the late 70s, Elsie & her 2 lodgers Suzie & Gail, the girls must have shared a bedroom! Also Jim, Liz & their boys Steve & Amdy, they had to share I guess but they were 15 yrs or older, is that really likely?
@londonlady227

@@glamdolly30s I mentioned before, they could convert the parlour or front room into another bedroom. I think when Linda stayed she slept with Elsie, s was shown before the wedding of Dennis, but I dont know about when Ivan was there. I think by that time Dennis had married himself maybe...as for the McDonald twins, they shared a room. Gail and Susie shared a room. As for the cludgies, the outside loos, they all had them but many had inside toilets by that time, usually with a small bath, sink.
