On this inaugural episode of the Fighter Pilot Podcast, US Navy Commander Brian “Sunshine” Sinclair answers the question, what is a ‘fighter pilot’? We discuss what a fighter pilot is, some characteristics typical of most fighter pilots, and the various paths to become one. We also debunk cliché Hollywood stereotypes while discussing what a fighter pilot is not.

Great talk. I love podcasts like this. Just casual and deliver information and experiences. I am too old to join the military let alone becoming a fighter pilot but it's always fun to relive people's lives that I find interesting.

Hi. Great show. I have listened to a number of your Podcasts on various aircraft types over the last few months. I have now started playing catch up from the very start / early episodes. Is a great way to make a long drive to & from work feel enjoyable as I'm an admirer of all Military Aircraft dating back to WW2 to the modern age. You've had some great guests on. Cheers

IMHO a fighter pilot is primarily an attitude with a mix of these components ; intelligence, confidence, thick skin, humility, discipline, attention to detail, risk acceptance, dedication to mission, work ethic, and willingness to instruct. - These qualities are common in Type A folks and necessary for success in flying fighters. - Have met a few folks flying fighters who are not fighter pilots and some support officers who are ground-based fighter pilots. My nickle on the grass 😁 Cheers, Shamu USAF Lt Col (ret.) 2,500+ Eagle hours

There's a big difference between someone who flies fighters and a fighter pilot. BTW, that's a nice thumbnail of the Shrikes' Legacy

I always find fighter pilots to be very even keeled, personality wise. They don't seem petty or angry, and seem to take things in stride. I always find it interesting how a guy who's a Commander and maybe in charge of a squadron can be such a nice guy. I would expect someone in that position to be a hardass more often than not.

Part of Mormon the fact that the CO is surrounded by excellent staff, XO, department heads, branch officers, senior enlisted to supervise and run the squadron in a safe professional manner. A good CO trusts his squadron and everything falls into place. My first CO made O-6 (Captain) and commanded a supply ship. My last CO made Admiral and was CO of the Pre Commisioning Unit of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76)

Hey Jello, love the series dude... Do fighter jets face wing icing the same way that other aircraft do? Or do they have some type of measure to counter it? Keep up the good work!!
@FighterPilotPodcast
@FighterPilotPodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jarrod. The F/A-18 only had anti-ice for the engines, no deicing capability for the wings.

are there no air conditioners in the jets???
@FighterPilotPodcast
@FighterPilotPodcast 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are heating and cooling mechanisms. The heat usually works fine--the AC can be hit or miss on older jets.

Once upon a Time.... Many thanks for this Jell-O.Hugely informative, as usual. Really, I should have been more organised with my youtube research and started my fast jet self-education here, instead of bouncing around all over the place. Just one question, ( hope you don't mind me asking, I'm trying to write a novel!) I appreciate that everyone's different, but are all fighter pilots to a man/woman supremely and overtly confident, or is it possible to exude just a generally understated confidence that commands just as much respect as those who are a bit ' in your face' so to speak? Thanks once again.

Can anyone answer. Does VFA-94 still have SHWFOTS or HOBO on the leading edge fence?
@FighterPilotPodcast
@FighterPilotPodcast 4 жыл бұрын
VFA-94 now flies the F/A-18F Super Hornet, which does not have LEX fences.

Thanks Jello. I knew about transitioning to the F model but didn’t know about the LEX fence removal. The skipper at the time CDR. “Luigi”. Mason you might know him. Was so proud of that, I believe it was SHWFOTS on one side and HOBO on the other fence.

Has there ever been pilots that are good pilots and can fly safe and professional but may have trouble with the boat? As in allowed to continue training but possibly take a land based track (P-8, E-6, etc...). Or are those type of students filtered out of the training earlier in the training track?.....or sent to the Air Force!!
