I remember my friends and i got so good at controlling the guided missiles while playing in the ski-lodge area. We could successfully fly the missiles through the interiors of the buildings without fail. We spent hours testing locations inside those ski lodges to see if there was anywhere safe from us. We came close a few times, but never found an actual safe spot inside. Every time we thought we found one, we ended up managing to kill them after a couple more tries. Sure it's not the way the game is intended to be played, but man was it fun. I remember we got really excited when Goldeneye Rogue Agent came out and we saw the traps you can trigger in multiplayer. We thought "oh man we're gonna have fun breaking this" but no, we didn't have fun. Because that was maybe the only good thing about that games multiplayer outside of the design of the maps themselves. No idea how they managed to make that game so boring.

The Exchange, Double Cross, and Phoenix Fire are some of the best FPS levels ever imo. Love the feeling of a fight for survival in Phoenix Fire especially. Even as a kid, I thought it was cool to play a level WITHOUT your iconic pistol, picking up whatever enemy gear you can find as drake fills the building with his army. That staircase bit is a gauntlet.

Nightfire is one of my most favorite games ever. The Bond elements, the intricate level design, the amazing MUSIC, the awesome guns and gadgets, the varied level objectives, the chaotic multiplayer. It's such a well-designed package that still hasn't been captured in many other games. There's just something special about this game and I hope more games, especially the upcoming IO Bond game, take notes from this game. I've replayed it a few months back and only realized now than you could go up into the broken glass room in Chain Reaction and it blew my mind. Something about discovering something new about a 20 year old game is just special, as well as seeing the behind the scenes stuff, the cut space segments, and stuff. I discovered your channel many years ago from your original Nightfire review and here we are again a decade later. I hope you do cover more games, especially ones you haven't played. Here's to many more years of Nightfire and Bond games!

Good Lord, Calvin. That was phenomenal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more comprehensive review of anything on KZfaq, much less a 20 year old Bond game. This is easily my favourite Bond game and the one I played the most, but there was a quite a bit of material in here that I didn’t know. Hilarious cut always, as always, and the software you’re using is awesome - the game visuals look incredible, especially given how old it is. Not just because they are your two longest videos, but this and your NTTD review are the new gold standard - it’s just great to hear you deep diving unrestrainedly into something you clearly love (or dislike in the case of NTTD) and know so much about.

Fantastic review. As someone who also adores Nightfire, and has so much nostalgia for it, I think your review really captures the magic this game has. Have you ever thought about covering the PC version in-depth at some point? I played it myself a while ago out of curiosity, due to my love of the console version but also because it was developed by Gearbox Software, who are now a triple a company making the Borderlands games which I'm a fan of. The PC version is an interesting mirror to the console and Gameboy versions, and whatever design documents all versions of Nightfire shared. No vehicle segments or on rail segments, so no Paris prologue, snowmobile chase, Aston ice chase, underwater vehicle, jungle SUV, or the Ultralight. Drake's snow retreat, Mayhew's Japanese manor, and both the stealth and escape from the Phoenix skyscraper. You get some unique levels like the Airfield and the space suit testing facility, where you kill Rook, which replaces the nuclear plant. The tropical island is interesting in that Bond and Alora actually infiltrate the place on foot, rather than cause a mountain of chaos in the console version, and the slightly odd cutscene where they've escaped pursuit and just happen to wander on a disused bunker with an air vent to the underground base. Both games have the underground bases but the PC version's is completely different in design and style, the only real similarity being the end where Kiko is killed by the space shuttle. As you mention, the final mission is on the space station itself, and while is a lot longer than the brief battle in the console version, I'd take the console version anyday. It feels like you're in outer space, in the PC version, it feels like you're trapped in a building with low gravity. I think part of the issue is the old Goldsrc engine the PC version uses. Cutting edge in 1998 with Half-Life, but by 2002, showing its age compared to the console versions. Level design feels far... boxier, lots of rectangular rooms and not many curves. I think the nuclear plant level is omitted is because the engine couldn't make a level that big in scope with the snipers. The console version is definitely superior, but the PC version is an interesting curio.

Thanks, Daniel! Really happy you enjoyed the video and thanks for the details about the PC version. It has been something of a white whale of Bond games for me for some time. Being a Mac user, I need to put some effort into figuring out how I could possibly play the game through Unix or some such. The Prima guide also features a walkthrough for that version of the game and I'm quite fascinated to see how different it is. Having already reviewed the GBA version of the game on the channel I will have to complete the set with the PC version eventually!

I replayed the game last autumn for the first time in at least a dozen years and I’d swear the guards in Chain Reaction yell “Stop it!” as well. To the point I sent video to my brother who’d also played the game back in the day and he heard the same thing. Maybe it’s the Bond equivalent of the Yanny or Laurel audio thing that made the rounds awhile back? And I join you in your love of Phoenix Fire as a level for its pure adrenaline rush, particularly that stairwell firefight. Also, you’re meant to use the remote torpedos on the final boss sub rather than the normal torpedos. Makes it A LOT easier to do so. Indeed, I have you to thank for me replaying the game (and the various other sixth generation ones) from your past videos. I remembered preferring Nightfire to Agent Under Fire back in the day, though I preferred the third-person action of Everything or Nothing (I barely got to play From Russia with Love as I only had it for the PS2, which my brother had, whereas I had the others on GameCube). Replaying them now, while Nightfire is a more polished game, I preferred Agent Under Fire as a FPS 007 game. It’s a personal taste thing I’m sure but having Brosnan’s likeness with a voice that so much isn’t his struck me as weird even then. And, more so than Agent Under Fire, this feels like a Moore film with Brosnan era aesthetics with this one riffing a little too much on Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me for me. Agent was just more fun to revisit, even if this one had more cinematic tropes like the gunbarrel and song that the previous game lacked, though my preference still is with the third-person games over the FPS ones. Still, this was a Christmas present in 2002 (my first as a Bond fan) and I have fond memories of playing this over the holiday break from school and afterwords, including the multiplayer where I had school friends who lived nearby who’d come over. So it’s hard not to be nostalgic and enjoy it, both then and now. And I got way too much of a laugh out of the Countdown gag!

I remember around about the time that this came out, there was a news special in Australia on the advancements in video game technology. A lot of the wrap around footage was of Nightfire gameplay and cut scenes. I guess, partly because Brosnan had such a recognisable face, they made a big deal out of the character models capturing his likeness and the environment visuals. I think Nightfire’s graphics were pretty damn top tier when it came out.

One of my favorites, honestly I always thought it was solid enough to be movie material. It's like a better version of Moonraker, Brosnan-era adaptation with David Arnold score would have been godly

Agreed, i think Everything Or Nothing would have been a great movie too. Sure the sci-fi shit later in the game is a little ridiculous. But considering the Bond films have always had better technology than the time in-which they're set, going right back to Connery. And obviously Die Another Day took that to extremes with the invisible car. So i think it was always easy enough to just accept as being possible in the Bondverse when you consider what they had in the 60s, and how fast technology evolves in real life. So i imagine the modern day of Connery's Bond would probably have a similar level of tech. Hell, i think a Goldeneye: Rogue Agent movie could be pretty great too, provided they market it as a standalone alternate timeline style one-off. And rewrite the story itself to make more sense. I'd just take the whole Bond dying in the opening, plus the classic Bond villains (either by recasting or maybe the movie itself could be animated). Everything else i'd hope they throw out and do their own thing. The concept of that game was great, it just failed somewhat in it's execution.

@@TomGallagherSuperboyBeyondHonestly, given even the more “grounded” Craig Bond movies eventually ended with nanobots as the main plot point, I can’t even say EoN’s story is too “Science Fact” for Bond. If anything, I feel like EoN even handled that plot point better than NTTD.

excellent video. your script, cut away gags, and overall humor while having the right level of research and polish. i am very fond of nightfire, i played the multiplayer a lot more than the single player, versing myself against bots in the snow level and destroying them for hours with the mini heli. i liked that you highlighted the raptor as your favorite gun, it was also mine at the time as i always felt it had to be some kind of tribute to the classic deagle from counter strike! anyway, onto watching your other videos! glad youtube recommended you!

Awesome video Calvin. Nightfire is also my favorite game in the series, as I grew up playing it on ps2. The missions, level design, and increasing difficulty as you progress all make it so fun to play. The 4 player split screen was also the funnest it's been since Goldeneye. I still play this game on my 65 inch TV with an hdmi converter. My personal favorite mission is Night Shift.

Fantastic video! I still remember firing this up for the first time and being blown away when the game threw me directly into a true Bond opening sequence, followed by a theme song. No game had EVER captured the feel of a Bond movie like that. I also couldn't believe just how good the Pierce Brosnan model looked. Countless hours were sunk into this multiplayer with my friends in high school--I got really, really good with the remote helicopters and used to annoy my friends. Team King of the Hill on the Skyrail map was our jam. Bond games absolutely peaked with this and Everything Or Nothing. I think EON actually managed to push the envelope even further in terms of delivering the most authentic-feeling Bond story in video game form (I think the third person perspective allowed them to do some things that just aren't possible in first person). I'd love to see you do a review this in depth of that game as well! Then EA's quality just started to decline. I never played Rogue Agent, but only heard not great things. I remember how over the moon I was for From Russia With Love after it was announced, but once I finally played it, it became clear that it just was not given the same level of polish and care that Nightfire and EON had (still a decent game, but a clear step down).

I actually remember the very first time i ever played this game, at a lock-in at my community center (they had an old Xbox that someone had donated) and that experience with booting up the first level and, like you said, really feeling like you were playing as Bond, especially in that first proper level was just AMAZING! I personally hope that new game that the Hitman guys are working on is as good as this, if not better. I can already see so many possibilities within the modern hitman games for a Bond-style experience. Last thing, keep up the great work Agent Calvin, your content has actually been very helpful in both getting me through a rough week, and research for writing my own Bond-style spy novel. Like I said, keep up the great work, it's nice to see someone who's able to actually be successful while just gushing about something they're truly passionate about.👍

Hi Calvin, A bit off topic... I've been doing a whole Bond marathon during the past couple of months. As a Bavarian guy, I'm therefore watching the German dub which sometimes seems to differ from the original version. I found out a couple of funfacts which could be interesting for you concerning some plot holes you complained about in the past 1. TMWTGG While leaving the karate school by car and without Bond, Hip argues that he "has to save the girls" before coming back for James' rescue. I don't know if he does this in the English Version aswell but it could explain his weird actions. 2. Moonraker After their return to earth, the captain of the space marines mentiones that they saved two survivors: A tall man and a small woman It is therefore more or less canon that Jaws and Dolly definitely survived. 3. The living Daylights While fighting against Bond, Whitaker mentiones that he's wearing a bulletproof jacket and that James' shots are therefore useless. It is not true that Bond only went for the head (which would seem quite stupid concerning that Whitaker is only carrying a small shield) - but his enemy was invincible anyways... As I've only watched the German dub, I don't know if any of that is news to you. My suggestion that the versions could differ is only based on older reviews, comments and debates of yours. Greetings from Bavaria!
