I had 86 Buick Riviera with a touch screen. It had 3 computers, one for the touch screen, body computer, and engine computer. All diagnostic you could do with a special menu on the touch screen. I bought the car in 1997, the year I graduated from college and my first job out of college was working for the company that made the computer for the touch screen.

This was well 30 years ahead of its time, its now a given to have touch screens in cars, but in 86? I do find it ridiculous how they would only give you AM radio in the cheapest model. Portable am/fm was a thing back then and they were darn cheap.

some of the disks that refuse to boot and just print "M" are old // and //+ games that don't work on the //e, //c, etc. because they checksum the ROM and refuse to boot if it's not the original autostart ROM. You can boot those disks on your //c with a2_4am's "anti-m" (links don't usually work in comments here so google for "a2_4am anti-m"). It also fixes a bunch of other things that make early games not work on later systems (patching some games that don't work on 65c02, booting 13 sector disks on 16 sector systems, etc.)

This we learned in the 80ies, copy protection only hurts the legitimate users. A good crack instantly makes the original (protected) game worth less, from compatibility issues alone. Alas, some people didn't learn the lesson, decades later. And yes, several archived images are already cracked, because they would otherwise fail to run in some emulator or variant, like this case ][+ vs //c. Its even more funny when the developers declare a game freeware and invite you to use a crack because they lost the source code (ie. Stunts for PC).

In Choplifter you can shoot the plane, but you have to be horizontal with your chopper. When you are vertical you can only shoot the tanks. There is a trick when loading hostages, try to lift the chopper a bit and re-land, then the tank will not appear, but be careful not to squeeze those hostages underneath the chopper!

My mother had an 85 Buick Somerset. It was a sporty 2 door coupe with the Iron Duke 2.5L 4 cylinder. While not having the CRT touch screen interface, the instruments were all digital and the radio was in a little pod above the center console. It was a pretty cool car and kinda futuristic for its time. Around 1988 my mother sold it to my aunt who drove that thing well past the year 2000. Those Iron Dukes were pretty crude, but damn they were pretty indestructible.

One of the basically unbeatable copy protection schemes of the 80's was to use a laser to burn a spot on the floppy, so that it could not be written to. The program would write to the "bad track", and if it got a good read back, it knew it was not an original disk. Basically unbeatable in the day, as a user was not able to accurately damage a disk in such a precise way. The tale of copy protection schemes on the Apple ][ series of machines is epic. Half tracking, quarter tracking, track arcing, so many super innovative ways to make a disk uncopyable. And the people writing programs that could copy them anyway. It was a computer cold war. Sad to say, back then i was a super pirate, because i could not afford any of these programs. But i think i have more than made up for it as an adult. I have spent raftloads of money on software over the years.

My parents had a Buick Skylark back in the late 80s that I tried to convince them to give to me when I got my license. Those were the days! Where 360K meant something, and did lots of things. Now, you'll be lucky if you get a thumbnail that size! Everything is in MB, GB or TB. I miss the 8-bit era because it was simple enough to master. Today, by the time one can learn something to an expert level, it's already obsolete. Technology is moving faster than one can master.

That's totally not true! Modern systems are still programmed mainly in languages like C/C++ (around since the 1970s and 80s respectively), Java (early 90s), C# (20 years old-ish), Python, Lua, etc. They work with libraries that make things look new and advanced. The only "new" stuff that comes along occasionally is a language or library that really changes things. The language Dart and its Flutter framework is an exciting new language. The syntax is quite easy, and the cool thing is you write your code once, and it compiles it to either native x64 apps, Android, web pages (using Javascript or HTML5 I believe), and iOS -- all from one code base, all with the apps looking and feeling the same! It's a really neat system that I've been taking the time to learn. And so what if the end binary is a few MB or whatever? You have the original source which is usually just a few K of text.
@rockapartie
@rockapartie 6 ай бұрын
@@AureliusR It's totally true when you look at the size of apps, websites and resource usage of browsers, which is absolutely bonkers in the case of e.g. Firefox. Before I ditched iTunes, it had an install size of like 400 MB, crazy high RAM usage, it's insane. MusicBee is way faster, has _way_ more options and features, and it's 28 MB and only uses like 50 MB of RAM, but programs like that are an absolute rarity these days.

I believe the microcomputer for the Riveria would have been a far more advanced Motorola 68000 series than an 8 bit. Despite only of dreaming of a 68050 as an Amiga accelerator, Motorola refused to sell them for home computers. They were just for automotive (especially ECUs) and dirt cheap due to scale for car manufacturers.

AFAIK, Motorola never released a 68050; they went straight to the 68060 which was used in some Amiga accelerator cards (and maybe some for later 68040 Macs?) Possibly also used in some Arcade games. Motorola released the 68EC040 for embedded systems, IIRC the Wikipedia page. It lacked the MMU and FPU instructions. The ‘LC040 had the MMU, but no FPU, and the straight 68040 has both.

Yes you can shoot down the jet in Choplifter. You just have to be facing left or right; vertical bomb dropping can’t hit it. And if you set down on any of the guys you kill them. If you park the chopper right on the door to the house everybody gets killed as they try to come out. And yes, holding the fire button rotates while quick taps fire on the C64. That’s one of my most favorite games!

I did some digging and comparing. Plugging that apple drive into a PC's external floppy port will not do any damage, but it won't work either. All of the control/signal pins line up correctly but the PC card does not provide power. Apple added +12V on pin 1, +5V on pin 4, and additional grounds on pins 2 and 5. These pins are unconnected on the PC end. A PC floppy drive plugged into the apple card would most likely work, although you'd need to provide external power.

The IBM 4865 external 3.5" drive has the first 4 pins of the DC-37 dedicated to power. Pin 1 +12 pin 2 12 return (ground) pin 3 5 return (ground) pin 4 +5 Otherwise the pinout is identical to the connector on the PC/XT and 4869 PS/2 floppy. (You may also safely interchange between those because although the PC/XT OEM FDC does not supply power on those pins, they are left N/C at the controller side and will not short or overvolt anything.)

I can't remember who made it, or where I got the card from. The standard floppy drive cable plugged into the card and then the card had another cable that connected to the floppy drive. There was no software required. I remember putting in an Apple Mac disc into the drive, reading it then putting in the PC disc and writing to it. Is Adrians dance party song from a Donkey Kong game?
@QunMang
@QunMang 6 ай бұрын
Yes. It's from a homebrew version of Donkey Kong for the C64. Adrian used to run the game for his 8-bit dance party until a viewer took the music and made the current demo with it.

Well, you're not short on copies of Choplifter now at least, as for "modern remakes" of classic games, I remember one I got for christmas (apt for this time of year), a modern remake of Space Invaders, which I think was called "Enemies from Space" or something like that, it was okay, a lot more to it visually, but still the same old enemies move to the right, down one, move to the left, down one, speed up, etc., it filled all of 10 minutes before I got bored of it... :P

Look up the history of space invaders, if you haven't. It is interesting, just how difficult that simple of a game was to make when it was introduced. For example, i remember some of the original space invader consoles in arcades, had a plastic striped color screen on top of a B&W CRT, so that the aliens changed color as they marched down the screen. And the game would hitch or pause sometimes when playing a sound effect or showing an alien ship blowing up, because the CPU in the system was running flat out all the time, so anything extra would make the game pause for a split second.

Actually, PrintMaster and Print Shop aren't compatible - they're just two competing products. I always thought PrintMaster had the better graphics, though (I never had it either - just the C64 version of Print Shop).

I made some beignets using that same mix Monday. Good stuff. As close as Houston is to New Orleans you'd think you'd be able to get some at just about any doughnut shop, but no! Nobody carries them around here, in fact most places didn't even know what they are, including a place that bills itself as a Cajun bakery/coffee shop.

The Beagle Bros. thing says "Disk #1" on the cover, so I'm betting that something is indeed missing from it...? The Choplifter keychain has the Sega logo on it, so its actually merchandise for their arcade version of Choplifter that came out in 1985. That's pretty neat (to me, a Sega person) =P And yes, Choplifter was for the Apple II first. PrintMaster was a competitor to The Print Shop with similar features, but both were eventually purchased by SoftKey (of Kevin O'Leary from Shark Tank fame), who continued selling both under the Broderbund name (which they also acquired) at the same time in the late 90s and early 2000s. I had two versions of PrintMaster Gold during that time as a preteen and I remember enjoying them; I want to get some of the clip art from those old packages back sometime.
