Well done Nigel. Keep up your good work. So sad to see Staups Mill in Jumble Hole Clough taken down recently. Some people have little understanding about the heritage of the area.

Had some great nights in The Hole In The Wall pub. It had a lot of character and was a sad day when it closed.

Regarding Lee Mill: I remember it standing in the early to mid 60's, and I believe the final owner may have been Thornbers of Mytholmroyd. The dam was directly behind the mill so isn't visible in the photograph, and I think it's south wall was demolished along with the mill. The new houses there now stand on both the site of Lee Mill and the floor of the dam. The dam was fed by a leet that runs from a weir not far downstream from Lower Mill, and goes through a large tunnel under a field, running for a hundred yards or more. It's not accessible to the public as it's on (under!) private land and there are no footpaths along the west side of the Hebden Water between Lee Mill and the footbridge featured in the video.

I worked at Foster Mill, when Redman's had it.That bridge over the road was used to send work trollies from one part of the mill to the other, they had 2 more mills, both in Mytholmroyd, one was at Cragg Brook, the other was up just opposite the Robin Hood pub.

Damn Chris, wish I'd known that before, I had no idea you worked there, speaking of the one up Cragg Vale, one of my next walks will hopefully be down that valley :) Best wishes mate xx

Great video. Would love to see you do mills of the Luddenden valkey as I know there were quite a few ( 5, I heard) which are not there anymore. Used to live on Goitside, would love to know more.

Pause @16:23 and note the house at the bottom of the street on the left, on the corner of Foster Lane. You can see someone's kitchen window is inches off the ground, effectively below the level of the road it's built upon! Nobody builds a house with windows below ground, or sills and door so low that surface water could run in. It looks to me like the inhabitants literally dug out what they could and remodelled what they couldn't.

I have watched a lot of your videos but first time commenting on one. This was such a good video, very informative and i like your relaxed style. I have relatives who lived in the area in the 1860s onwards and i know they worked in mills in this area. Great video just like the others, here's to many more in the future too.

I would have liked to find out about the dreadful Acre Mill and the asbestos they processed there. Any chance of you doing a video about that? Although I am a Northumbrian I have lived in West Yorkshire for many years and love its history as I write novels set in the old West Riding.

As Nigel says, the memories are still a bit raw for many around here, but what's often forgotten is that it was the highest paying factory in the area so people were willing to work there even though it's nickname was "the death shop". ("shop" in local parlance simply meaning "workplace") Nevertheless, it killed a lot of people who worked there & even their families who got asbestosis from fibres brought home on overalls.
