In a match-up featuring two of the top four teams in the nation, Joseph Forte, Brendan Haywood, first-year head coach Matt Doherty and the fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels square off against Jason Williams, Shane Battier, Carlos Boozer and the eventual National Champions, the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils in an epic Tobacco Road matchup.
Game played on Thursday, February 1, 2001 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.

This was the peak of the Matt Doherty era. Never again would it be this good for him as UNC coach as it was on this night.

It was his signature win as Carolina's head man! They did win the ACC regular season title and Forte was co-National Player of the Year but it would be the loss to Penn State in the 2001 NCAA second round that started the downward spiral with Forte, Peppers and Curry all taking leave! Forte coming back could have made the '01-'02 team somewhat more relevant! Being named Player of the Year completely self-absorbed him

I think it’s because Gut and Co. didn’t recruit well. Note that the 2005 champs were actually Doherty’s group

This was my favorite time of watching sports - just entering my teen years and I was a huge Battier fan. He was the leader and smartest guy on the court. The crowd loved him and chanting his name was amazing. I realized I could outsmart opponents when I played hockey, lacrosse, basketball and get that W! I hated losing and realized I had to do the little things. What a guy. What a career on every level. It’s a shame Jay Williams never got to see his potential professionally. Brings me back. NBA on NBC and these college games with Dickie V and Billy Packer on CBS. Taught me the game of basketball which I would argue is the greatest sport. When it’s played at its peak - like this game, it’s poetry in motion. The crowd right on you like in Hoosiers. Thank you so much for these videos on here!

Yeah thank goodness it did not go in. If it had, I think it would have been the biggest shot in the Carolina Duke rivalry at that point because it was beyond half court and would have given Duke the win. Walter Davis in 1974 and Jeff Capel in 1995 were probably the two biggest shots up to that point and probably stayed that way until sadly Austin Rivers' shot in 2012.

We should’ve had Haywood guarding the inbound pass on that last play. They basically got a walk up wide open half court shot for the win. Too much suspense lol

Who has the game in UNC later that year? Or either matchup from 1999 season?
@bradlewis6514
@bradlewis6514 4 жыл бұрын
Not just either 1999 matchup but all three! Duke swept three from the Tar Holes that season, including 97-73 in the ACC championship game! Blue Devils only team in ACC history to go 19-0 in league play! Their amount of immature youth was what cost them in the end against UConn! Brand and Langdon were superb but the rest played like their ages under the pressure

For a period of time, of about 20 years yes, Tobacco Road was the best rivalry in college basketball. From 1990-2010. In the 1980's in was UK vs Louisville. And in 2010-now the UK vs UofL has once again taken over the best rivalry in the sport.
