One thing that I find really interesting about this matchup, especially with the release of this song, is the seemingly juxtaposition between Coco and Yatsubashi and Mercury and Emerald. This song, based on the lyrics, seems more geared for Merc and Em, and is all about murder, pretty much. Team CFVY's song is similar in sound, but is more about having a thrill ride. Coco is dressed richly and seems to have no problems with money: Emerald is a thief who had to steal to survive. Yatsubashi seems very honorable and virtuous, while Merc is an assassin with no rules and doesn't care about virtue.

I know I'm a few years late, but there's a further juxtaposition between Yatsuhashi and Mercury. Mercury had his semblance stolen and wanted it back, while Yatsuhashi is afraid of his semblance and would be quite willing to give it up.

I think one thing I really liked about this episode is that the Villains weren't just invincible because plot-armor. The match was a stomp, but Mercury actually took a couple good hits for all his cockiness. The "oh shit" look when he got grabbed by the neck definitely made it one of my favorite fights of season 3.

I wouldn't really say that Mercury is cocky. He's definitely confident but cocky people generally won't forfeit a match for any reason or let himself look like a defenseless welp in front of the whole world(after Yang fight)

Btw, this fight isn't really an example of the Worf Effect. Coco and Yatsuhashi are the ones that are supposed to lose this fight by a long shot. Merc and Emerald are professional killers who went through years of abuse and gained strength from that, whereas even though Coco and Yatsuhashi are powerful, they're still just mere students who primarily train to fight grimm pitted against hardened killers.

I wish that last part played a part in Ruby's development in the show: The difference between fighting humans and Grimm. Grimm(the ones that aren't huge at least) seem easier to fight and won't take a toll on your conscience since they're monsters. Humans on the other hand, are her own kind and can think and act like she can, meaning they strategize, making us somewhat more dangerous than the average Grimm. They don't really seem to teach that aspect at Beacon. I figured someone like Qrow would at least want to prepare his nieces for fighting and possibly, having to kill other people.

@@Jimmeeehhh Team CVFY may be a capable fighting force, but they're still teens. And teens think strength is everything. Plus, they've never seen either of them fight. So they wouldn't know what to watch out for. Not to mention, Emerald's semblance is kinda OP for RWBY as a setting since it's so mechanically different from everyone else's. There's not really a counter for mental/illusion based fuckery.

His father never cut off his legs. They were rendered useless after Mercury killed his father during the fight and thus Mercury decided to get cyborg legs.

if that's the case why does he already have bandages/are bleeding when he killed marcus? Obviously he killed his dad _right_ after his dad chopped 'em off, so he isn't really accustomed to them, hence the bleeding (like in FMAB with Lan Fan).

Well when you send the slow as fuck fatasser builds against a monk build. Thats essentially why Yang was able to beat him. They were of equal combat status and she pulled through with magic pixel and semblance advantage.

***** Foxx and Velvet should have been the go to for this, or at least Foxx and Yatzu. If they weren't keeping Velvet under wraps, she would have swept the floor with these guys, as she could just use a weapon that would pin either emerald or mercury into a position for any choice of the three to wail on them without fear of effective returning fire.

Schwarzer Blitz Velvet would have eventually found an effective weapon that would counter Merc. I could see Pyhrra's sword and spear being a decent counter, if not Jaune's kite shield. That and the fact that she could immediately switch up her effective ranges by changing weapons means that she could effectively get the jump on Merc every time she changed her loadout. As for Foxx, we haven't seen him fight for longer than 10 seconds, so we really don't have much to judge him on. As for Eme, there isn't a soul in remnent that can defeat someone who can mindfuck you with total impunity. Mental illusions are too OP.

Bunny I doubt that entirely, Mercury ENJOYS killing, he's a murderer's son, after all, and trained to be one Emerald on the other hand, she has that chance of ditching Cinder because she did feel a bit of sympathy as she watched the Grimm raid Vale and Atlas military bots kill innocent people Neo, she just doesn't look like she would, we haven't heard anything from her metaphorically and literally, no backstory whatsoever, just another one of Cinder's allies

It's a lot easier to hear this song/watch the episode just knowing Coco and Yatsu are okay. That was a nerve racking preview. But damn, this is a very good villain song.

God, such a great fight. Season 2 and 3 were so diverse and balanced. It was cool to see all the different teams with different styles and abilities. Each character felt genuinely different and unique....we miss you, Monty. 😭

This was the perfect theme for this battle. Has the crazy intensity of Caffiene, yet paying attention to the lyrics, you can tell it's Emerald and Mercury's theme. Also, I can tell that Yatsuhashi could be one of the most powerful huntsmen out there. How can I tell? Well, Mercury is superior to him in skill, yet check out Merc's face at 2:22. It's filled with fear.

I freakin love the sheer energy and bravado in this one. The lyrics are just as spectacular as the tempo but then the parts about mercurys abuse add at least a little depth as well.

The song is badass and perfect for Mercury and Emerald. Tailor made for their fight against proven badasses Coco and Yatsuhashi. The lyrics also show their upbringings as an abused son of an assassin and a thief with perception distortion. An awesome fight song for Mercury's next fight with Yang could be a mix of this and "I Burn". It would be epic!

I just realized, this song isn't just about Mercury, it's about Emerald too. They're dangerous and scary criminals, and they're even worse when together. While Mercury's beating you up to a bloody pulp, Emerald's raping your mind with her illusions. I am both looking forward and not looking forward to see that happen in the show someday.
