I used a fine thread sheet rock screw, not course thread to further minimize the chance of scaring anything. Can't thank you enough for mentioning that bypass hose. Really appreciate you doing this vid. It helped me.

I have my 2000 Nissan Frontier 3.3L in the shop and would have not known about replacing the cam shaft seals and the hose - I was able to call them this morning and add those to the list - they were almost ready to close it back up. Many thanks... 🤓🤓

Yes - 295K - also had the rear seal done and pan gasket - and the transmission rebuilt since I had to pay for the labor to take the transmission out. I'm hoping to get a least another 50K miles.@@anesthesiadreamin

@@charliemurphy3529 it's a pretty good motor, once you get past rebuilding the head gaskets, I bet you'll get a lot more out of it than that. Mine is still running strong after the head gasket replacement and head rebuild. Just keep good quality oil in it, and keep on top of it, it's only three something quarts So be sure to not let It get low. You obviously already know that because you're addressing the leaks 👍 hey thanks for watching, for your comments, and good luck 🙂

Yea, it was running fine, but the rear seal became a big issue - that is what drove the train - I did have an issue with the transmission in cold weather - had to put in 2nd for about 5 minutes, then it was good to go - so the tranny probably needed a rebuild anyway. I actually cannot remember is I have had the had gaskets done - probably not. I wish they would make a regular "old fashion" oil stick for that engine - it can be a little hard to read. It did turn out that the timing belt was worn pretty bad - so, the rear seal oil leak may have been a sort of "lucky break" - otherwise, I think I would have just keep on "truck'n" ... 🧐😃@@anesthesiadreamin

@@charliemurphy3529 okay, yep that all makes sense, thanks for sharing that. I agree with you about the dipstick, it's totally stupid. I would let my engine sit overnight, then I would check the oil because it was so hard to read, and then I would read the lowest mark on the four different sides, cuz they were all different!

I just took a small standard screw driver and tapped it in where the seal contacts the cam shaft to break that part away, then I was able to stick in a larger screwdriver and pop the seal right out. I tried drilling through first, but it was really difficult to drill into the inner metal ring of the seal while keeping the bit where I wanted it. After inspecting the new ones and seeing there was room to do this, it seems like the fastest and easiest way to go. The outer seat for the seal is aluminum, so if anyone tries this method it should ONLY be done where the seal contacts the cam (and crank) shafts. The shafts themselves are pretty dang hard, so if you do this carefully it shouldn't scratch those.

great tip on removing those seals I never seen it done that way. I will try that next time. I'm no mechanic but I think I would have replaced the tensioning pully with a new bearing or the entire thing if it comes that way. I take it this is a rotary engine? looks very much like my old porche 944 engine. that tensioner on my porche got loud over time.

@@anesthesiadreamin Thanks. Also should have asked was there any trick that you used? A seal from an OEM kit the inner lip folded and a Duralast one did better but its still messed up. I'm just using an axle socket and ball joint adapters to press it in.

Thanks for putting the time into making this video. I have a question, what did you use to take off the cam sprocket?? Im thinking of purchasing a special tool at the parts store. What is the torque specification for these sprockets?? Thanks again god bless have a good day.

To anyone else wondering the answer to the torque question as i needed to know, the cam sprocket torque is 58-65 ft-lbs

Im surprised there isn't more comments. Thank you for posting this video. I'm about to do this job on my pathfinder. Its going to be my first time doing a timing belt. I understand how everything works and been doing all of my own mechanic work since before i was old enough to drive but this is a big one for me. I appreciate you posting this video. The reason im doing it is cause my crank seal is leaking. Did you have any problems getting the camshaft sprockets off? Did you use an impact?
@anesthesiadreamin
@anesthesiadreamin 5 жыл бұрын
Yes i used an imact for removal and installation(probably not the best idea for installation). And a large screwdriver through one of the holes and pressed it against an edge of the inner timing belt cover to hold the camshaft sprocket

I think one time I jammed the tips of a large pair of vice grips into two opposite holes, then used an impact to pop the nut loose. If your sprocket is stuck on the shaft, I would soak it in PB blaster or seafoam spray and then try a gear puller

When is the right time to take the cam pulleys off to replace the seals? I’m worried that if I take them off separately and they move it might throw off the timing. And then I’ll really be screwed.
@anesthesiadreamin
@anesthesiadreamin Жыл бұрын
You can turn the crank until all 3 timing pulley marks align with the fixed reference marks. When you take the belt off, The pulleys may move a little bit, But you can move them back in line with the reference marks easily. After you put the new belt on, and the tensioner, you will rotate the crank which will turn the cam pulleys, until the cam pulleys make a full revolution. If they line up, you are good. I usually rotate it a few times just to make me feel good LOL. If they don't line up then take the belt off, line up all the pulleys again, and try it again.

Question, to replace the crank seal, how did you get the crank gear off?
@anesthesiadreamin
@anesthesiadreamin 3 жыл бұрын
The crank gear sits just behind the crank pulley, which is held in place by a large bolt. Obviously you have to consult your manual, but once you pull this bolt the crank pulley will come off and then the crank gear. Mark the pieces and pay close attention how they come apart and in what order. Make sure you note how deep the crank seal is recessed inside the engine housing... You want to put your replacement seal back in that exact spot and not too far

Also, I use an industrial impact wrench to pop the crank bolt loose
