Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
In a previous video I asked whether people would be interested in watching review videos on my channel, and the answer seemed to be a resounding yes!
So, in this video I’m kicking off a new occasional series of videos in which I’ll perform short reviews of locos, rolling stock, kits and anything else that seems pertinent to the hobby.
The first subject for review is one of the newer liveried Graham Farish class 31’s, which were announced in 2022, one of which arrived with me just before Christmas last year.
If you've just got back into the hobby after a long break, then please let me know how you've found the experience.
Alternatively, if you're an old hand at modelling in N gauge, then please impart your wisdom, and point me in the right direction, especially if you see me making a mistake or heading for disaster!!!
Thanks very much for watching.

I have some 31s which I have fitted Zimo decoders to. I believe the Farish fitted DCC chip is also by Zimo. If so you can set the brightness of lights by changing CV 60. 250 is the maximum value.

@@iansngauge The only way I found out really is to look up the documentation for the decoder - which is rather terse! I suspect there is an easier way depending on what controller or interface you use, but I'm just using an NCE powercab.

Hi Ian, I don't normally watch review videos, but to be honest you caught my eye and I thought you did an excellent job! you covered all aspects brilliantly, and obviously looked for photos of it in that livery. Like you I was intrigued by the red solebars so I also looked up images to try to find out what year she carried this livery. According to some flickr images I looked at, she carried the livery in the late 80's which make a lot of sense as this was the period Railfreight started to come in and also carried red solebars. Regarding the sound version for an extra £90 isn't a bad price when you consider you'll have to pay between £20-£30 to get a decoder for it anyway. Sound decoders usually start at £100 upwards but if on a tight budget, go for the normal version and treat sound as an add on later on. Unfortunately with the prices of the world we all have to decide where our pennies can be better spent. All the best Tony.

Hi Tony! Ah, I lured you in with the snappy video title no doubt! :) Thank you very much! Yes, like you, I looked for photos and found a few on Flickr in this livery! My research also revealed that the loco was named Cricklewood in 1987, so I'm wondering if that's when it got the new paint job too? I think it was more common for the green liveried 31's to have the white stripe though! I know what you're saying about the cost of sound, but I think sound cost around the £200 region, and the non-sound fitted ones around the £100 mark, then maybe it wouldn't all be so eye-watering! All the best, Ian.

Well that's excellent! Glad the video was of some assistance! I don't know whether you saw in one of the comments that apparently you can make the headcode disks brighter by altering the value of CV 60 if you're using a Zimo decoder? Hi Gary! Thanks very much! Yes, steamers do seem to capture the imagination of most people! I'm modelling the period I remember best from my childhood, which means running locos from the mid seventies to late eighties! I expect I'll have the occasional steamer run around, but it will be predominantly diesels! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian Very good review I think, all the main points covered really but a couple of things, as you mentioned them in a reply, this 31 was repainted as a 'depot pet', later in its BR Blue livery life hence the unusual livery with the white stripe and red bufferbeam etc (although some 31/4's did get white stripes too when ETH fitted for the South Pennine trains). The Headcode panel lights are dim (as they were in real life!) and this particular model represents that, if you had a Headlight fitted 'refurb' model the lighting would be a lot brighter! I do have a earlier issued BR Blue 31312 also sound fitted and yes its great I love it and it runs beautifully, slow speed etc, although I too am a ' BR Blue' man and I also am looking for a non-sound Cricklewood to go with 31312. Lastly, I have to say although the pricing for all models is increasing beyond belife, it is always slightly cheaper to buy sound fitted models from the start, as opposed to 'retrofitting' them later, which will incur added costs. Good luck with it, looking forward to any more updates or reviews. Thanks

Hi Peter! Thank you very much, especially for the extra information! Any idea when this custom livery was applied? I thought it may be when the loco was named Cricklewood, which was in 1987 as far as I'm aware! Yes, I've always endeavored to get sound fitted locos from new, but I've got the Farish 20 and Depol 43 currently on order which didn't have sound fitted options, so will probably have a go at sound fitting one or both of them! Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian. I like your style of presentation. More information is always nice, although not if it's too trivial. Grading is also good. If the quality is there, £90 for a sound decoder (and speaker) is not too excessive - although, I do understand your "eye-watering" comment. You just really need to want sound.

Hi Ian, well done on what I would call an excellent review video. I don’t often watch them as most are to long for me and I found this one just right, plenty of info and the train running round at low and high speeds. I bought my class 31 second hand for around £70 with no sound. I like the sound and I think a few selected loco’s with sound on a layout is probably good enough rather than keep laying out for sound loco’s. It’s nice to have a dedicated N Gauge reviewer, thanks for doing it and look forward to more, cheers Ian, John

Thanks very much John! It certainly took longer to prepare the video than it did to watch! Lol! Yes, I agree, I have a list of locos that I want sound fitted to (from my trainspotting days when I was a kid), but the rest can run silent! I've got a couple on order that don't have sound, and will probably try and fit it myself at some point, so that should make fun viewing as I trash a brand new loco! Lol! All the best, Ian.

First class Ian. Interested to see the speed it can attain. My new 60 can only crawl slowly. I posted a question on one of the N gauge forums and discovered other people have had the same issue. Some say send it back others say the newer motors on locos are made to only replicate the maximum speed of the real thing. Your loco does seem to run far faster than my 60 mmmm...interesting! Cheers Euan
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Euan! The 31 can go a little faster than I demonstrated, but not much! They had a top speed of around 90mph, which I'd say was consistent with the scale speed! I think the 60 had a top speed of 60mph, which is considerably slower, so maybe your's is running fine? The 08 I had all of the trouble with certainly has a scale speed, and lumbers around the layout at a very good representation of about 35mph flat out! By comparison, my tiny 03 operates like it's Concorde, so I really need to set up some CV values to slow it down! All the best, Ian.

Overall a pretty decent review Ian. A couple of points, the lights are as per the prototype i.e. only the headcode box lights iluminated in the forward direction, there were no marker lights on the front unless a headlight was fitted, or it was a headcode disc fitted variant, which in this case neither apply, and yes they were dim, no LEDs in those days. Secondly, the loco is an A-1-A A-1-A not a Co-Co. The centre wheel in each axle is not driven. I have to say that I disagree on the value. By the time you add the £20+ quid you would have to for a standard DCC you actually only end up paying around £60 more for the sound fitted version, which if you were to buy a sound decoder would be £100+.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the clarifications Scott! Funnily enough, I knew it was an A-1-A A-1-A but somehow managed to get it wrong! Oh well! Regarding costs, I think I was just getting off my chest that models are just too expensive nowadays, and that £238 is simply beyond what most people can afford! All the best, Ian.

The forthcoming farish class 14 is an extra £100 on the list price for the sound fitted version, which seems to be the norm at the moment. BTW - I believe the 31s were A1A-A1A rather than Co-Co, I.e. centre axles we’re unpowered.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Hi Ed! Yes, £100 seems to be the price you pay for a sound fitted version at the moment, which I can't help but feel is too much! But then again I think the majority of stuff in the hobby is far too expensive! Ah, yes, I actually knew about them being A1A-A1A and for some reason said they were Co-Co! excellent review, *especially* covering performance over 1st radius set track points and the S curve not sure but you may be able to adjust the brightness of the lights by messing with the CVs? though I gather headcode boxes were pretty dull and basically only visible at night so it may be about right - loco headlights as it were of the era being more so you could see it coming than for the driver to see where there are going. does look a very nice little model, not really suited to my location sadly (WCML) though that does avoid it utterly outclassing any of the others. not 100% convinced on DCC sound, I suspect largely due to the noise of my current fleet likely drowning it out but that review video of yours shows the sounds nicely - I gather you really need some sort of automation system to get the best out of sound but do want to experimentificate at some point nicely done :)
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Dale! Did you note in the information sheet I showed that the loco was recommended for 2nd radius curves and above? I haven't looked into adjusting CV values for the headcode light brightness, but will have a look when I next have it hooked up to the computer! I agree that they would be dimmer than loco headlights, but not being able to see them at all is a bit frustrating! Regarding sound, I'm purchasing sound fitted versions that I relate to from my trainspotting days when I was a kid! I've got sound fitted versions of the 101, 08 and 31, and will at some point be after a 37, 47, 40, 43, 20 and maybe a Peak! So far they've all sounded rather realistic in my opinion! Yes, automating them would be a great project! All the best, Ian.

Hello Ian. Thanks for the review of the class 31. That’s been really helpful. I’m thinking of adding Cricklewoood to my fleet. My only concern though is the colour of the loco. From some of the pictures I’ve seen with the main retailers it appears to be a darker blue than typical BR blue. Compared to your other locos what do you think? Regards Richard
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 7 ай бұрын
Hi Richard! Thank you! That's an interesting question! I have a number of BR Blue locos, some of which represent locos that have had variations of the standard livery applied by their home depots! For instance, the white stripe and red bufferbeam of 'Cricklewood' were applied to the loco at Cricklewood depot, and the colours are supposed to represent the livery the loco was turned out in when they were first built! I can't find any mention of the blue, but it's definitely darker compared to my standard BR Blue locos! However, if you search flickr for '31309' it seems to be an accurate representation! FYI, I also have class 50 'Thunderer' and a class 20 'Redmire' and none of the blues match each other - it's not even close!!! Hope this helps! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngauge Thanks for your reply Ian that’s really helped a lot. I guess I need to see one in the flesh to make a final decision. Our stories are incredibly similar. Like you I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s with a keen interest in both real and model railways. Half my family were at that time working for British Rail. Having been away from the hobby for about 35 years somebody bought me a book on successful retirement as I am due to take early retirement in a couple of years. It stressed how important it was to have various hobbies and interests so my interest in model railways was rekindled. In the 70’s my layout was all OO but I decided to switch to N just so I can run a realistic length of train. It’s scary though just how much the hobby has changed in those 35 years. It’s a very steep learning curve! Keep up the videos. It’s refreshing to see somebody show their progress warts and all.
