I have a Commando. My sarcastic friend would often say “Do they know at the factory that they don’t start?”
@stuartmoles84321 күн бұрын
Even if that Norton never starts I’d still buy it, fabulous looking thing😂

I have installed two Boyers over the years, before there were alternatives. Both times I went back to points. Only Boyers kicked back on me. Going to try Pazon on the Norton coming up.
@fjdelmonte19 күн бұрын
Hmmm. Bad experience. Sorry! My Boyer experiences have been 99.999% great. Pazons are also really nice. Been using them for years. Also consider the new Wassel VAPE system.

I found out I couldn't kick hard enough to spin my Commandos fast enough to start or even pop. I got my brother or my friend who could do it easily. I started Commandos thousands and thousands of times, even my race bikes were started with the kick lever for races, But My knees and heart ran out of gas, so I went to E starts and get to ride without the pain. My fresh engines all have 175 lbs right off the bat. * Nothing to kick about., but beyond my ability now.*

Keep on riding! Way to go. I need to ride more now that I have both of my bikes running again. And besides, Kevin is having all the fun.

I believe every pop came from the left hand cylinder, in case you haven't watched this back. My MKIII has two sets of points & twin coils with a ballast resistor. I hope your Bauer system proves a point. Well done & good luck.
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
Yeah, I saw those left pipe pops in the video. Makes me suspect the ignition system even more. Thanks.

@@fjdelmonte In case you're not familiar, a renowned British engineer, is re-building a late 1990's prototype one off Norton "nemesis" V8 1,500cc on youtube, 6 video's so far. It belongs to the British national motorcycle museum. He got it running for the motorbike show, but all was not well & now he has it completely stripped down. Norton should be ashamed of what he has unearthed so far. Search for Allen Millyard norton nemesis. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eKingNFi1NXPgXk.html

God loves a trier Frank! I agree that you should move on to another part of the “job sheet” and then, when Kevin gets back, ask him to get a bad knee 😂 Seriously, I agree your rationale. It’s got to be a spark issue

That compression is extremely low for a new set of rings I'd expect to see over 100psi and and around 140 with oil (20/50 oil) down the bore
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
I expect the compression to increase dramatically once the bike starts. I've seen low compression on many bikes right after the top ends were rebuilt. I really don't think the problem is inside the engine. Time will tell. Keep watching. The fun continues.

Just thought you need one of those back wheel motor starter things, save the old knees

Look up my video, "Opinion Rant" for my thoughts on roller starters. Ain't gonna happen.

@@fjdelmonte move to the top of a big hill😁
@fjdelmonte19 күн бұрын
What!?!? And end up pushing it back up that hill!?!? I did that when I was 15 with my 1952 HD 125 Tele-Glide. Ain't never gonna happen again. (But it was a cute suggestion! Thank you for following.) Oh yeah, by the way, Phoenix doesn't have any hills. It's flatter than a fritter.

Another thought is maybe it has a Norton atlas crank fitted The alternator keyway is in a different position to a commando crank I've seen it before Also I assume you haven't inadvertently fitted R type plugs with R type plugs caps I did this once on my commando It made it really hard to kickstart into life Although from a bump it started instantly and ran fine
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
Good thought. Plugs are non-resistor, but I will check the wires and caps.

At 76 and a former rugby player and long distance runner, my knees are shot so I can no longer kick start a bike but that Commando sure looks good in the British Racing Green. Are those standard silencers? They certainly look very good!
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
Silencers are Colorado Norton Works Pea-Shooters. They are beautiful, and well made. I will try to remember to do a Zoom-In on them the next time the bike is on the lift. All of CNW's products are top quality.
@daviddavis771020 күн бұрын
How about putting the seat back on and getting a couple of burley guys to give you a push? Could the problem be that the piston rings are a very tight fit in the cylinders?
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
The rings are tight, no doubt. The bike is hard to kick and it's not the compression holding it back. But, I'm still convinced the engine internals are not the problem. Keep watching. The bike will go back on the lift soon.
@MrPotatochips415 күн бұрын
Yeah, but when it does start you'll feel like you are a young stud again.
@carlhokanson91605 күн бұрын
No, you feel like a defeated old man with bad knees and a weak heart and out of breath.
@jonnycrunch593120 күн бұрын
As others pointed out, no smoke from right exhaust makes me wonder if it's a bad coil or didn't move the coils to being wired in series instead of parallel when upgrading to the Boyer electric ignition. (even though there is spark, it might not be enough spark for pop to occur )
@fjdelmonte19 күн бұрын
Yup. Ignition will be the first thing I will look at when the bike goes back on the lift.
@davidshattock952221 күн бұрын
Got to be the timing unit if fitted or similar .
@bartmanlestrade908921 күн бұрын
I take it that the plug caps are not on the wrong plugs?
@fjdelmonte21 күн бұрын
Electronic ignition. Both plugs fire at the same time.
@fjdelmonte21 күн бұрын
Good thought, but electronic ignitions fire both plugs at the same time. One cylinder on compression, the other on exhaust. They call it a "wasted spark" system. Sounds weird. Works just fine.
@56Model3021 күн бұрын
Swop the leads from the electronic ignition reluctor plate and it will run. I know it’s a wasted spark and shouldn’t make a difference…but it does.
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
Black/Yellow and Black/White have to go to Black/Yellow and Black/White. Otherwise the system will try to advance backwards. But, I agree the problem may be the ignition system. Keep watching. The bike will go back on the lift soon.
@8-Tryzub-818 күн бұрын
Find the problem, don't force anything. Compression, ignition, timing, fuel. If all are set correctly, it'll start easily within a couple of kicks, without help of starting fluids, wheel spinners, etc. (I'm betting the problem is ignition / timing).
@fjdelmonte18 күн бұрын
I'm with you. Should get the bike on the lift in a day or so. Ignition will be my first focus.
@gregborneman552321 күн бұрын
Any chance the electronic ignition is 180 degrees out?
@fjdelmonte20 күн бұрын
Interesting thought. I'm not sure it's possible, but I'm sure gonna check it! Thanks.
@gregborneman552320 күн бұрын
@@fjdelmonte When installing and setting the analog Boyer on my TR6RV, the engine has to be on the compression stroke, or the timing will be 180 out. It will pop and backfire when 180 out.

I'd kill to have an Alton or CNW starter on this bike. And my knee would agree.
