BREVARD COUNTY, Florida - A large wildfire broke out at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Saturday as a severe thunderstorm passed near the area. According to archived radar and lightning data, two cloud-to-ground lightning strikes out ahead of a storm that would go Severe Thunderstorm warned at approximately 3:53 p.m. sparked the blaze. This continues to burn through the afternoon and evening, with the smoke visible on weather radar and from over ten miles away visually.
Included in the video are clips from the severe thunderstorm. Note the lightning clip included in the package is not the strike that caused the fire, but to rather show how electrified this storm was.
