Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
In this video I’m going to perform a short review of the N Gauge Society’s Hunslet locomotive.
If you've just got back into the hobby after a long break, then please let me know how you've found the experience.
Alternatively, if you're an old hand at modelling in N gauge, then please impart your wisdom, and point me in the right direction, especially if you see me making a mistake or heading for disaster!!!
Thanks very much for watching.
Ian

Hi Ian, great review of this cracking little model! I may consider one for my quarry or dairy if I can get one with a suitable livery! Cheers Gary

Great review Ian, pretty good loco overall. It would be like opening a can of corn beef and then trying to get it back in.

Lovely video. I`m going to the NGS York do later this year where a Hunslet will be bought when I can see the livery in the flesh.

Hi Ian I have one in yellow and with a light on top and as you said it run very nice indeed the stay alive isn't very powerful. But it is a small loco. You did a great review on it. Colin

Thanks Colin! There's so much variety I'm stumped at which one I should get next, but the yellow one with the light is definitely a contender!! The stay alive gives about a second or so of running, which isn't long, but plenty to get it over any 'sticky' bits I've had on my test track! All the best, Ian.

Looks like a very interesting little loco and a great runner. Can't believe the price for a DCC fitted loco - bargain!

Hi Simon! Yes, it's a fantastic little loco, and like you say, a complete bargain with a pre-fitted DCC chip - that also operates on DC without a blanking plate needing to be fitted! Cheers, Ian.

Nice one Ian, the downside ( scratches , glue etc) a minor concern, I think it looks to be a good buy, cheers mate

Thanks Phil! I agree, with my failing eyesight, you can't even see the glue marks with the naked eye, and I only noticed them under a macro lens! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian Great review of what is in essence an excellent loco! I do have one and yes I do want another one (or two.. or three..lol), For the price point regardless of joining the society, it is a fantastic piece of engineering with both DC and DCC capability without having to change from blanking plates to decoders, is a missed oppotunity for the major manufactuers in my opinion and a real coop for the NGS. I can only hope any future loco realeases from NGS will have the same system. I t is worth knowing perhaps that a certain Mr Ben Ando (of Revolution Trains) is/was also involved in the making and development of this model along with many other very highly skilled people of course. Thanks

Hi Peter! Thank you! Haha, I'm with you on the two, three, four... thing! I think you're right that manufacturers should be fitting DCC chips that can operate on DC too as it would simplify things for those who have a DC layout who intend to upgrade to DCC in the future! Taking locos apart remains the single most stressful thing I've done in the hobby so far, so having a chip that works on both systems is excellent! Thanks for the information about Ben Ando, I didn't know this, so it's good information to have! Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian, I agree entirely with your comments on these great little locos, so much so I have my third one waiting to arrive at the moment. Although I must say I haven't had the heart to 'wizz' them along at full pelt, I find it quite captivating watching them slowly trundle along with a few wagons rolling behind. Loving your content and thoroughly enjoying watching your progress, all the best... Paul

Hi Paul! Thank you very much! I've got firm plans for a second one, just have to work out which livery would suit my needs best! Haha! I felt a bit rotten whizzing it round at top speed, but it handled it beautifully, and I wanted to demonstrate just how well geared it was! I suspect that when I start using it in anger, it will never get above crawl speed! Thanks again! All the best, Ian.

Another really good loco review Ian, well done mate. Really good performer by the looks of it and the way it crawled along was excellent! I came out of the N Gauge Society as I felt at the time I wasn’t getting much out of it but I’m seriously considering re-joining. I think when I joined just prior to Covid there wasn’t much happening in terms of new products. Everything I wanted was out of stock, so now maybe the right time to get back into it. Cheers Ian, John

What an excellent model! It has taken such a long time to come to market due to the NGS being particular about the quality, and rightly so. Having got the technology working, you would hope that these features could be implemented on small to medium sized locos produced by others. Thanks for the review! Best wishes. -Ed

Hi Ed! Thank you! Yes, the NGS has done an excellent job, especially with the amount of technology they've managed to cram into this tiny loco! They just need to find a little more space for a speaker and a sound decoder and it will be an even more phenomenal model! :) I'm really hoping that other manufacturers sit up and take note of what has been achieved here, as it truly is amazing! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, thanks for the review. That's definitely some seriously impressive slow running! As it happens today I'm putting my commentary to a video (but not a review) I've made about my new Graham Farish 4F that also impressed me with its slow-crawl ability, quiet motor and smooth running out of the box. That and this Hunslet show what's possible... and I totally agree that price is excellent for what you get!
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, and thank you! I could scarcely believe my eyes when I saw how slow this little loco could crawl! I look forward to seeing if the 4F can out-crawl it! Lol! Yep, there are some impressively engineered locos available, you just need to know which ones they are before splashing the cash on them, as there are some truly abysmal ones too! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngauge I originally tried the 4F on speed 3 of 28, so I've just tried and filmed it on 1 of 128 - it could be a close call between the 4F and the Hunslet! I've put an addendum in my video :) It should be online on Wednesday

Hi Ian, Great review thanks. I spotted the loco in one of your other videos and it piqued my interest and I tracked it down. I viewed the loco specs on the NGS web site, then saw the price and immediately signed up and bought one! Also many other wagons were ordered with it and I'm currently eagerly waiting for them to make their way to me in Australia. I have a bit of a soft spot for shunters and the Hunslet will join my classes 03, 04, 08, 14, and 17. :) As you say, it does make you wonder how much profit is needed on the big brand locos to keep their businesses afloat. Does anyone know if this is a Dapol side build or a truly bespoke loco?
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve! Thank you very much! I'm positive you won't be disappointed with the loco, it's a real gem! You'll have to post a review of the wagons as they're something I've not looked at yet! I have a soft spot for shunters too, which is why I persevered with my class 08 and its running problems for so long! I've got the Farish 03 too, although I can't see beyond the Hunslet now and will definitely be getting another! I think that the bigger manufacturers take us railway modellers for granted, as where else would we get our locos? I just wish there were more smaller groups like the NGS who were willing to challenge them and show what can be done at a truly remarkable price! All the best, Ian. P.S. I'm not sure which factory the NGS used for the build, but I believe the design is completely bespoke!

Greetings Shelfington and hello Ian 👋 Great review of the "Wee Beastie" 😉 the NGS did a brilliant job on this model 👍 and they are a joy to own 😍 I haven't looked inside either 😇 as I had a nasty experience with a "Teddy Bear " a few years back 🤐 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️

Hi Ian. Is there something wrong with the railings on one side of the loco? It seems to be at an angle (not so on the other side). I'm still not clear on the meaning of "Yard mode". Only £82!? Hmmm...you pointed out the easily-chipped paint and excessive glue marks, and I mentioned the wonky railings - might this be the reason for the "low" price?
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! No, the railings are fine! They taper towards the front and back of the loco on both sides and are perfectly vertical! Yard mode is the term they use for when you want direct control of the motion of the loco, i.e. with no inertial momentum effect! In other words, setting the speed to zero stops the loco immediately! This is useful when the loco is operating in a "yard" when shunting wagons around! Yep, £82 is a bargain, whether there are a few glue marks (that you can't see with the naked eye) or a bit of chipped paint! Remember, the Farish class 31 I reviewed had dodgy paintwork around the cab windows, but it didn't stop them from charging nearly three times as much as this little gem cost! All the best, Ian.
