Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
Okay, so here's the plan.
Eventually I want to have a rake of Pullman coaches on Shelfington.
The idea is that the luxurious umber and cream coloured carriages will give me a great excuse to introduce an A3 steamer to the layout, or even a Deltic to haul them around.
Thanks very much for watching.
Ian

Alternatively, if you're an old hand at modelling in N gauge, then please impart your wisdom, and point me in the right direction, especially if you see me making a mistake or heading for disaster!!!

Hello Ian! Ah, eBay purchases (other suppliers are available), the gift that keeps on giving. Nice (if not elegant) solution.

Haha! Thanks Paul! Yes, eBay can be a bit fraught with danger when purchasing anything! I find most people are honest with their listings though, and sometimes oversights are made! In this case I actually received a partial refund once I pointed out that the coach wasn't as described! In the meantime, by bodge job is still holding up well, so much so, I may have to patent the idea! Lol! All the best, Ian.

have had some fun with those sort of couplers, well similar, the coupler, spring and housing on the bogies of GF class 25 & 47 locomotives which are similar in that they have the small spring - they don't have the housing, its part of the removable bogie frame - the "top" being the fixed part of the locomotive bogie. anyway the only way I got them in was to put the spring on the coupler, holding with a finger, slide the other end into the housing, and then while covering it to stop it escaping, compressing and putting the coupler in place. thankfully they stayed there while I carefully reassembled the bogie. _in theory_ similar should work with that design - i.e. fit the coupler to the spring then compress - those tweezers may help and yes, this is far more of a faff than it should be, I prefer the older style couplers with the metal "box" that clipped over to hold it all in place

Hi Dale, thanks for your advice! I tried hooking the spring onto the coupling before putting it into the housing, but it made it difficult to slide the combination into the housing - which is when the spring inevitably disappeared into the carpet! This is when I moved onto using tweezers to compress the spring, and tried to insert it between the coupler and the back of the housing, but in this case, I couldn't seem to 'let go' of the spring without it shooting off across the room! It would be a whole lot easier if they came preassembled, with a cap on the housing to keep the spring from being exposed! Thanks again! All the best, Ian.

What a palaver 😲 it would make you want to go to the bar 🍺 Couplings are a different kind of hell 👿 to fishplates 🤕 less blood 🩸 more psychological damage 🤯 You get paranoid about drooping too 🤭 Hadrian is a nice looking coach though 👍 so well worth the effort 👌 Best of luck hunting for the rest of the rake 🤞 🌞☘️

Morning Paul! Yes, a palaver indeed! You're right, it was psychological warfare between me and those damn springs, and the springs won this battle! It was definitely worth persevering though, as it's such a lovely looking coach! All the best, Ian.

Ian Yes another fiddly job. The springs have come out of some of my rolling stock from time to time. I first put the spring into place using a cocktail stick. Then after carefully removing the stick and making sure the spring is facing up in the housing I manoeuvre the coupling into the spring and press it down into the housing. Easier said than done you just need to persevere! I am going to convert all my wagons to magnetic coupling. I don’t have any Pullman coaches but I wonder whether the window arrangement is similar to a mark 1. If so those with good airbrush skills and transfers could fashion something together? Just a thought.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice, I'll have to give that a try, although a cocktail stick seems like it would be too large for the spring to fit onto it! I think that magnetic couplings are definitely the way to go, although my plan is to just fit the end wagons / coaches in a rake with them so I can uncouple the rake easily from its loco! I'm not sure I've got the skill set for painting stuff like that... yet! Would be an interesting project though! Thanks again! All the best, Ian.

Thanks Chris! My plan eventually is to use normal Rapido couplings for main rakes of wagons and coaches, and fit the end vehicles with magnetic couplers, such as Hunt couplings, to aid with easy decoupling from the loco! Yes, it'll definitely be interesting to see how the standard Rapido couplers stand up to a circuit of Four Oaks Street! All the best, Ian.

Evening Ian - another entertaining video. These little springs can be a bit of a nuisance. Clever bit of work on your part to come up with a solution. Dapol do a kit which allows you to replace these pesky couplers with NEM pockets which mean you could either use their easi-shunt couplers or magnetic ones from Westhill Wagon Works. I replaced a number of these spring couplers on my farish VDA wagons a number of years ago. Cheers Euan

Morning Euan, and thank you! Nuisance is not the exact word I'd have used, but yeah, they are! I've seen the Dapol kits, but they seem to do different versions, and it's not completely clear which one I'd need to do the conversion! Any ideas? I'm quite interested in using the Elite magnetic couplings, which I think are the Westhill Wagon Works ones! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngaugeokay - I think my learned colleagues have already given you the Dapol code. I used 2A-000-009. This is for wagons and was fairly easy to do. The kit being recommended is 2A-000-14 which says it's for vehicles rather than wagons. I'd assume this means they can be used on coaches. Let's what happens when Stephen has a go......

Hello Ian, good to see some second-hand stock refurbished to live another day. Nice work! I can not believe what they are charging for new coaches these days, I won't be buying any in a hurry. The only time I have played with couplers is when I experimented with some Micro Trains couplers, and they had a tiny spring that needed to be fitted, which was a right pain in the you know what!! Cheers for now.

Hi John! I hadn't expected to do any refurbishment, but if truth be told, I quite enjoyed the problem solving element - apart from those damn springs! I think I'm going to try fitting NEM pockets eventually, so I can use Hunt / Dapol couplings, when I work out how to! Prices for new and second hand coaching stock is insane at the moment, and more like I'd be expecting to pay for a small shunting locomotive than a coach! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, Well done on getting the coach to roll and couple! It's a shame the axle reaming didn't work in this case (that was the final thing to get my JHA wagon bogies running freely). Yes Graham Farish coach prices in particular seem to have gone silly - they're certainly well over my own temptation threshold, but a Pullman rake should look very nice behind an A3 - good luck with the hunt for coaches (and with finding a Dapol A3 that works well)!
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jonathan! The axle reamers seem very good, and took away a fair bit of material, although I think most of it was crud that had settled in the axle box rather than plastic! I may give it another try as I hate throwing things away - and especially expensive bogie sets! The GF Pullman coach second hand prices are almost double that of the usual Mk1 coaches, and I can't really figure out why! I've recently picked up a rake of five second hand Blood & Custard Mk1's for £125, which I thought was a bargain, especially as they all run perfectly and are in superb condition! Yes, the current Dapol A3 implementation is problematic for me, but I'm sure I read somewhere that they're changing the design in the next tooling, so I'll wait for that - or hope that GF produce one! All the best, Ian.
@endoorrailway
@endoorrailway Жыл бұрын
@@iansngauge I don't know if the Pullmans have more specific detail - if each is a little bit individual then I guess that might make them more expensive than other stock - but I wonder if it's just that demand is very high. I've found this time and again with model railway stock - originally back in 2005 with Lima OO gauge "Fag Packet" HST stock, where items were fiercely contested on eBay and going for 3 or 4 times what an equivalent new price would be! I now fear regretting not buying something whilst it's in production (it seems low-risk as if, on the flipside, I regret buying it then I can probably sell it on at minimal loss later on). Yes an as-new 5-coach rake for £125 seems like a bargain these days - well done! The A3 should be one of those designs that's popular enough to keep being made, so I'm also waiting for a reasonable implementation of one after my failed attempts with the existing tooling. Sound-fitted seems to have become a standard option on new tooling too, so all the more reason to wait :)
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Жыл бұрын
@@endoorrailway - The Pullman coaches are certainly different the the other Mk1's I've got, but I wouldn't say that the detailing is any more intricate or superior in any way! Like you say, they're probably just in higher demand, certainly for the named coaches, and probably fewer of them were produced! Yes, I'm hoping that a sound fitted A3 comes out sooner rather than later, although it's GF who seem to be leading the trend in sound fitted locos and not Dapol! Cheers, Ian.

I totally agree about the over priced rolling stock new or 2nd hand, so i have turned to Japanese market like Trading plaza or hobby search and picked a rake of 6 carriages and bogies with couplers already fitted for the price of 1 new Pullman. They are kit form but very easy to make and they glide around my track. The only warning is price of postage! buying in bulk is the way forward.

Yes, rolling stock, especially new coaches, have reached figures I'd be expecting to pay for a small tank engine or shunter! It's quite ridiculous! I'm intrigued by the Japanese market, as N gauge seems to be the most popular scale there! I've not actually considered purchasing stock from overseas, but maybe I should! It wouldn't hurt to take a look I guess! Thanks! All the best, Ian.

Ah couplings. As you know that has been uppermost on my mind recently. I see that Euan mentioned the conversion kits. Mine haven't arrived yet but when they do I will probably video me fitting them in case you may want to have a go with that approach. It is well worth keeping an eye on auction houses that specialise in model railways for second hand coaches and locomotives etc (Vectis, Special Auction Services and Excalibur Auctions are the main three I watch) If you register with the sites you can go and see what previous sales reached which will give a better idea of what you should be bidding or spending elsewhere once you add the buyers premium of course which is around 24%. It is also worth knowing that the auction houses post and packing services are charged at full cost for the service and it attracts VAT. By way of example I was successful in bidding (absentee bid) for 10 Stanier coaches. The hammer price £150, buyers premium was £36 and post and packing was £25 +VAT of £5, so £216 in total. The pullman coaches do come up quite often but the named coaches fetch a premium. Stephen

Morning Stephen! Yes, couplings - annoying little things aren't they? Which conversion kit did you go for? I've looked at the Dapol ones, but there seem to be several different variants, and I wasn't sure which one I'd need for this type of coupling! I'd also love to be able to convert some of my old Peco wagons to NEM sockets, although am not sure if this is possible as the housings seem to be moulded into the bogie frame! I look forward to seeing how you get on with fitting your conversion kits! Thanks for the information about auction houses, especially with their pricing! Postage seems very steep for such a small package! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngauge Mark Ireland suggest the Dapol 2A-000-014 kit. I will have to remove the pocket on the PECO wagon. I have some of their kits I put together and they are easy to take apart. The coupling kit arrived today so I will try to have a go before next week and video the outcome. Mark says he has done it many times and it is easy to do. Euan also suggested the same thing. Auctioneers postage isn't postage. It is a despatch service (hence VAT) on which, as in all things, they seek to make a profit. Very few auctioneers offer that for absentee bids leaving it to you to arrange a third party to collect and deliver. The three I mentioned all do provide despatch services. Stephen
