This is why Mrs Walker tolerated Hilda for all those years - Shared memories - shared experiences from the past

Brilliant episode in all ways, especially the contrast between Jack's 'relaxed' return and Annie's terror and relief - brilliant. Also the wonderful brief scene towards the end between Jack and Lucille.

the acting in this is so natural and felt--- I am weeping---and this form of entertainment has been undervalued.Later Hilda on Stans death is great because it is felt. The old lady loosing her daughter is spot on . Sorry weeping for her xxx

@Jill Rossiter I totally agree. The daft thing is though, this episode was broadcast 9 years before I was born, and I have seen it many times as I have the DVD collection, but every single time David says, "it's Mrs Sharples" I burst into tears!

Private Walker from Dads' Army has got his stripes up in this episode - as the police sergeant; James Beck, for it is he, also played a copper in an All Gas and Gaiters episode.

Amazing to think this was studio based they didn't have the outdoor lot till the following year. Even more amazing this would have been a live recording - not broadcast live but recorded as thought it were - one take no stops or retakes. If they made a serious error or there was a technical fault they had to go back and film the whole thing again.

At the point 3:49 the actor who plays the copper is James Beck who later played Joe Walker in Dad's Army.
