Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Brian "Spiderman" Kamp and former F-22 Raptor guest Terry "Stretch" Scott return to conclude our in-depth look at the unbeaten Boeing F-15 Eagle and even answer a few listener questions before they go.
Previous guest co-host Mike "BS" Walsh also returns to offer some follow-up thoughts including a comparison of the Eagle's slow-speed flight handling to the F/A-18 Hornet - also a Boeing product.
Episode bumper music by Jaime Lopez / announcement by Jim Hendershot. Artwork adapted from original photography by Airman 1st Class Matthew Seefeldt, USAF. This episode was produced by our friends at The Muscle Car Place Podcast Network.

I was talking with an F-22A pilot who started out enlisted as an AWACS mission crew specialist, then became an officer and an F-15C pilot. He later transitioned to the F-22A. I asked him if he missed anything about the F-15, and he said, "The pitch rate/instantaneous turn not being regulated by FLCS." Other than that, the Raptor seemed to be a beast in acceleration, climb rate, maneuverability, and speed, let alone its sensor capabilities. I remember the early 1970s F-15As and TF-15As with the engine nozzle blades still intact, the progress into F-15A evolution, the wish list that formed the original F-15C, and the changes that evolved the F-15C over time dramatically, starting with the APG-63 upgrades. The new APG-63(V)3 is almost an entirely different radar compared to the 1970s tech Mechanically Steered Array set. That F-22 pilot said that when he was still flying F-15Cs with the new AESA, even when he "cheated", he couldn't see the F-22. Not sure what he meant by "cheated", and I didn't ask him to elaborate, but I imagine it had something to do with setting up on it in a place where he knew it would be outside of the agreed-upon ROE.
@FighterPilotPodcast
@FighterPilotPodcast 4 жыл бұрын
He probably meant narrowing his scan to revisit a certain piece of sky more often, possibly even changing the pulse repetition frequency emanating from the radar.

Those nozzle blades are called divergent nozzle segments, and inside are convergent nozzle segments, as for the pilot telling you about the F15C with the Aesa radar trying to find an F22s....I doubt a pilot would discuss anything about the capability of the Apg63v3 radar...either he/she is just giving you something to hear...or they are violating Opsec.....I've worked the Eagle a long time.. and I knew some things about what it can do but others are a need to know basis.
@LRRPFco52

@@stephenszabo2361 All he said was even when he cheated, he couldn't detect the F-22. He never specified what "cheated" means. My dad worked on the F-15 CTF at Edwards on primarily the F-15E, and would only say that even the first major upgrade to APG-63 on the C model would have justified a new designation for the radar with a later number variant, but since they were so tightly controlled with F-15 radar capabilities, they left it at APG-63, possibly for deception purposes. The F-14 was touted all those years as having such a great radar, but it was really the F-15 that had the A2A radar to beat.

@@LRRPFco52 You are absolutely right with the APG-63. Declassified documents show that APG-63 of USAF already in 1984 had LPI capability, NCTR capability, multi track/engagement capability to name only some. The last being not completely usable at the time due to AIM-120 being behind schedule. As you say deception is stilll important. I think APG-63(V)3 can certainly detect F-22 at some range, but pilots cannot talk about this due to OPSEC.

Great interview! The Israelis have the most kills with the F-15 over a 2-day period in 1982, followed by USAF F-15Cs in Desert Storm over roughly a 2-week period. The bulk of the Eagle's 104 A2A kills happened in those conflicts. The USAF has a few more from the conflict in the Balkans.

Pretty amazing testament to the Eagles designers. Its the last active duty fighter in the US that is not controlled via fly by wire, yet these guys are raving about the flight controls and handling characteristics and superior maneuverability. F-15 might be second only to the P-51 as the greatest war plane in American history. IMO. Thanks for making this a two part episode.

NOTORIETY - movie Air Force One features a quite heroic F-15 flight that features night time BVR & BFM, well in Hollywood style but still relevant. And you didn't see many such things back in 1997 (VHS tape era) so I'd like to point it out. They showed 59th squadron from Eglin. No, it has nothing to do with my name :)

IIRC the F-15 stick is calibrated to fixed g at fixed hand pressure. 3.75 lb/g or so, which makes the muscle memory a little easier as long as you can apply consistent force.

Yet another great one Jell-O! So interesting listening to Spiderman talk and enlighten me on the Eagle. What an amazing bird! But I was very puzzled about his repeated assertion and opinion that the F-15 is the Infantry of the air. Wouldn't the A-10 be more accurate and deserving of that title? After all the Hawgs main mission is CAS and they're often visible to and close in with the Infantry and and Marines. Has the average "boot on the ground" ever seen or heard of an F-15? Don't mean to nitpick but...
@FighterPilotPodcast
@FighterPilotPodcast 4 жыл бұрын
He did not mean in the sense of helping the actual infantry on the ground but rather how an infantryman's job is hand-to-hand combat with other soldiers. That is the Eagle's job also, only in an air sense with other fighters.

@AvengerII
@AvengerII 4 жыл бұрын
The ASAT live-test was done with a modified A-model and that happened in the mid-1980s. They were going to modify more A-models, establish a squadron for the ASAT mission, but it never happened. There were rumors they were going to similarly mod an F-14 but it never happened and I think that was just a rumor. The Soviets may have pressured the US government to stall the program, or (more likely) the US military felt the program wasn't needed and they could accomplish the same thing with robotics or an SDI offshoot program which has been done. They've destroyed satellites in orbit with high-speed "pebbles." They talked about reviving a launch system using F-15E-models since they're newer and have more powerful engines than the interceptor-dogfight models of the F-15 (A/C). They were going to launch mini-satellites for the military from an F-15E at altitude, probably above 45,000 ft, maybe as close to 60,000ft as possible depending on what the altitude of the F-15E is with a rocket load because you can't fly anywhere near the F-15's ultimate ceiling (110,000ft) with a normal combat load, let alone a rocket! It's been a while since they've talked about doing rocket launches from E-models so the program may have been stalled or canceled.

@@FighterPilotPodcast I've heard 2 main arguments regarding Boyd: A. He was a profane genius who forever changed WVR air combat and helped develop 2 of the teen fighters against the will of the Pentagon. B. He was a charlatan self-promoter who is given more credit than due, and had divergent ideas from what we really needed in a fighter. We often hear Pierre Sprey talk about how Boyd's opinion was that the Air Force ruined the F-15 by packing it with electronic garbage and all the bells and whistles, reducing its performance, which caused Boyd and crew to start a little internal revolt with the Lightweight Fighter. From the results of the F-15's combat service, one has to accept that the highly-trained Eagle mafia leveraged its "complex garbage" to set record air dominance over all its adversaries, both in BVR and WVR. Pilots who transitioned from other fighters, including foreign exchange pilots, have said the APG-63 was a game-changer for SA, especially working in a 4-ship. One British fighter pilot said it was basically an unfair fight due to the ability to see first, and he felt invincible in the F-15C as a result.

@@LRRPFco52 I think you mean "profound" genius. Let me tell you something about Sprey. He never designed ANYTHING. NOTHING. Not even a fucking PAPER airplane was he involved in the design of. He had NO input into ANY designs, ever, period, the end. What he DID do was analyze low level statistics at the Pentagon, where he befriended Col. Boyd and others. He was always viewed upon as a "hanger on" and not particularly brilliant or insightful in any way. He never flew anything, ever, and never served in the military. He knows exactly jack-shit about combat. Boyd was not against putting *necessary* equipment into aircraft. He was against putting *bullshit* into the aircraft that wasn't directly related to the mission of the aircraft. If it wasn't designed to shoot down an aircraft or keep it from being shot down, it should be carefully evaluated before just slapping it on the jet. That second point you mention, item B, that's Sprey. Boyd got a lot of attention, and went around crowing about stuff at the Pentagon, sure, but he was always well respected and his opinion *mattered*. Sprey, not so much. It wasn't until after Boyd and the guys were dead that Sprey began telling other people all this horse-shit about him designing this and that and thus and so. btw, we had the APG-65 in the Hornet, and it is/was a great radar set. They updated it to the APG-73 if I recall correctly, and it's even better. Those definitely give you good SA, and working with (at the time) TADIL and not Link-16 networking, you get a great view of the battlespace from the air. That is critical to keeping you alive while prosecuting targets.

I’m Navy… I still love the F-14. For me nothing as is beautiful as a deck of F-14’s at sea with the sun going down behind them. However, the F-15 is right there.. I would kill to have seen the Navy build the proposed ASF-14 which would have made the F-14 similar in concept and capabilities brought about by the F-15EX.. I worked as an OS on Ike during the transition from A-7’s to f-18’s. I was personally disappointed at what the 18’s we were capable of in comparison to the F-14 on CAP. That being said… I wasn’t that disappointed because at that time.. we were told the F-18’s were replacements for the A-7. We still believe the A-6 was being replaced by the A-12 and the F-14 D’s would replace the A and B Tomcats. What ultimately bothered me was the replacement / kill off program of the A-12, F-14, A-6, S-3, and EA-6B and replacing all these with the F-18 which never really could meet these missions at the same capacity.

Esp the B's and D's with the GE engines. On station loiter was improved by 60% with the GE-110 engines over the P&W P30. No a/b cat shots with the B/Ds, Military power on both GE's is equal to the thrust of TF-30 at zone-3 a/b. When the fleet got the Digital Flight Control System in mid 2000, the F-14 became a much better aircraft to fly and operate slow around the carrier. Marconi is a UK based electronics company who built the Marconi DFCS for the F14. The system was tested by a test pilot future astronaut Mark or Scott Kelly, I always confuse(their twins) them, actually bent the test Tomcat which required the NATOPS to be revisited for max rolling G limits. The new EX will be awesome, stronger strike Eagle airframe loaded with air superiority avionics. I just saw a CF-18 overfly yesterday. That jet would be a F/A-18 of early 80's vintage, similar/same to the jets you tranistioned to. Our fleet of 132 CF-18s are based off the marine version of the F/A-18 A/B. We just received 18 more A's from Australia Canada should buy a fleet of F-15EX's. CF-15's anyone.

This is a good podcast for the most part, and I love the Eagle, but I do not appreciate the softball discussion of the friendly fire incident in the Iraq no-fly zone. There are so many items of official policy that were violated during that incident, as well as moral failures, that it defies all belief that nobody would criticize the officers involved in the incident. Another item of context: the F-15 units were in perceived competition with F-16 squadrons for kills (victories). The key people are out there now prospering in retirement, and were never punished, and that isn't right. I suggest everyone interested read this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Black_Hawk_shootdown_incident#Actions_taken
