Rather than writing tales of gods and heroes or flattering court panegyrics, the poet Theocritus of Syracuse (early second century B.C.) chose to focus on the simple life. As the founder of "Bucolic" or pastoral poetry, Theocritus cast the humble shepherd as the main subject, using idyllic scenes from the ancient countryside to illuminate his poems in a fashion that would be emulated by later artists such as Virgil.

I'd say there is a definite connection over a period of thousands of years between the bucolic poetry of Theocritus and baroque music of the seventeenth century. A slow dance form known as the "siciliana" most prominent in the works of Alessandro Scarlatti a composer of Sicilian origins (actually a dynasty of composers prominent all over Europe) which is intended to convey a feeling of rural and pastoral tranquility especially in settings of the Christian Nativity story. Other composers got the idea like Bach and Handel with their pastoral sinfonias intended to create the same atmosphere as in the Christmas Oratorio of Bach and the Pastoral Sinfonia in "Messiah," Then it becomes an analogue for peace and prosperity as in "La Paix" -the slow movement in Handel's music for the Royal Fireworks that celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle. Serene shepherds on ancient Sicilian hillsides playing their bagpipes.
