Fighter Pilot Podcast

Күн бұрын

Every conflict has its quintessential fighter: in World War II it was the P-51 Mustang. The F-4 Phantom symbolizes the Vietnam conflict and in Desert Storm it was the F-15 Eagle, arguably…. Well, there’s no argument about the iconic fighter of the mid-50’s Korean War-it’s unquestionably the North American F-86 Sabre.
On this episode, retired U.S. Air National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Jim “Skinny” McLennan, who piloted many aircraft over a 30-year career from the F-84 to the F-100 and later the A-10, joins us to discuss his favorite: the F-86. Skinny expertly covers our usual ‘aircraft series’ topics while Mr. Paul Wood, last week’s intermission guest and founder of the Warbird Heritage Foundation, returns as guest co-host to help us better understand the Sabre.
Listener questions addressed include fighters escorting rescue helicopters, the 2008 PBS Carrier series, the apparent demise of toy fighter planes for kids, the various titles for Naval Flight Officers, and more. Read of the F-100 that inadvertently shot down a B-52 in 1961 here: www.angelfire.c...
Episode artwork by Janek Krause / music by Jaime Lopez / announcements by Clint Bell. This episode was produced by our friends at The Muscle Car Place Podcast Network.

The Sabreliner shares a lot in its design with the F-86. There are several videos of pilots rolling their Sabreliners. Also I think it was Bob Hoover who did low speed demos in the F-100 to calm the fear of flying the jet at low speeds.

Hi Vincent with respect to the F86, i think there are some interesting stories from Australia with the RAAF and Malaysia with the RMAF. They operated the Sabre with twin 30mm cannons in lieu of the 6x50cals guns.

Flew both F-22 and F-23. Guess which one he thought was superior? Metz also flew the Thud in Vietnam) How about Steve Ritchie or Chuck DeBellevue? @@hckyplyr9285 True. But there might be still engineers and mechanics who had experience with it, and if the Arrow can't make it for an entire full episode, it can be included into a topic about other aircraft of the era, or maybe, about aircraft which didn't hit a full scale production despite being great designs.

The Hunters - Robert Mitchem as the old hand. Robert Wagner as the young hot dog. Great flying scenes (F-84s used as MIGs). From a novel by Robert Salter, a West Pointer and F-86 combat vet from the Korean War. The ending of the novel is much different from the film.

Just came across this podcast today when I was wanting to watch another documentary about the p38 lightning. Your podcast was the auto play after that and I’m enjoying my 2nd of many. Bit of a shame they didn't look more at the CAC Avon Sabre. It had 30mm Aden Cannon and Sidewinders and a bit better thrust/weight ratio than the Canadair Sabre. Great ep though on possibly my favourite aircraft.

The only place I would add to the list of movies and pop culture appearances of the F-86 (apart from the novel Hunters, which you mentioned), is The Iron Giant. According to IMDB the planes which engage the giant are FJ-2/-3 Furies, the Navy version of the Sabre. An animated appearance, but still valid I feel!

I'm sorry Jello I'm going to have to respectably disagree with your guest. Australia build the fastest & most powerful Sabre. The CAC Sabre, sometimes known as the Avon Sabre or CA-27, is an Australian variant of the North American Aviation F-86F Sabre fighter aircraft. The F-86F was redesigned and built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation. Fantastic show . Thanks for sharing 👍👍🙃🙃

The same plane Welch claimed to exceed in Mach 1 in did in fact exceed Mach 1 a couple months later flying in the same configuration flying the same profile. All respect to Bob Hoover, but that's Bull Hockey. The boom was heard, the AF had already calculated it could do it, and Welch was ordered to keep it to himself. Welch was 1st to Mach 1. Takes nothing away from Chuck, but denying this happened is getting silly.

Interesting you mention Col Rodriguez and his kills from Desert Storm & Kosovo and the 'He is the only man to 3 enemy A/C in the last 40 years' what about then Capt Robert Gordon "Wilbur" Wright's 3 kills in a F-16C Blk40 526th Fighter Sqn in what became known as the Banja Luka incident 28th Feb 1994. Not to take anything away from Rico's amazing career.
