On the same day DMAX Ltd. celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Duramax engine, our L5P engine surpassed 1,000 horsepower with stock internals! In this episode, Gale Banks explains how the Banks-spec Comp camshaft delivered as promised. He busts cam timing myths and blows you away with stats you've never seen. What's next? In the comments below, tell Gale how you'd like to see the engine pushed further. At some point, this engine is going to go BANG.

Hydrogen Peroxide. Counter-intuitively, it lowers temperature even more than water. Also, unlike water, it provides extra oxygen that helps the fuel burn more completely. Two things I'd love to see, are pulling the ancillaries off the front of the motor and using a second turbine exhaust side to drive them, see how much power that frees up... And a comparison between the stock setup EPA test mileage and the current configuration doing the same test, to see if there's been a gain in mileage for fixed amount of fuel used. The latter will tell us how much further a truck with this set up will go when driven normally.
@Karjis
@Karjis 4 жыл бұрын
PiDsMedia Remember that turbine energy is not free, it increases counter pressure for first turbine making it effectively same thing as too small exhaust. But if engine is not near any limit of course that can de done.I remembered Scania doing this at early 90's and it seems Volvo was doing it more lately. Detroit also mayde had these. Basically same thing but auxliary equipment also works full power when idling.
@PiDsPagePrototypes
@PiDsPagePrototypes 4 жыл бұрын
@@Karjis - I was thinking later, it'd also need a wastegate to control the ancillary turbine speed, to have the accessories running at optimum speeds, rather then varying up and down. The bypass that controls would aid in removing the counter pressure you mention, or at least limiting it so it doesn't reduce the engines power or main turbo's effectiveness.

I would love to see what effects water methanol and just pure water injection has at this point, leaving everything else constant. I think a lot of people (myself included) are at the limit of their turbocharger or fuel system but are looking for a little extra power so it would be interesting to see if water methanol will offer any benefits at this point by improving MAD. Also curious if nozzle location has any effect i.e. installing directly at the after-cooler exit to allow maximum time for evaporation or direct port injection. It's my understanding that having liquid water droplets enter the cylinder is a no-go. Thanks for all the awesome content Gale, looking forward to see what's next!

An interesting Manifold Air Density experiment would be to test a Compound vs TwinTurbo setup to observe the differences between the two configurations and how they differently affect manifold air density and turbo back pressure. First do the compound test, then do a twin turbo test. Finally, revise the exhaust manifold piping to be less restrictive and re-run the twin turbo test.

Twin turbos will only have affected on the back pressure, thus better scavenging. You can not increase MAD limitless. Increase in MAD means higher manifold pressure. Higher manifold pressure means higher cylinder pressure. But the cylinder pressure is already at max at 4 times ambient gauge pressure at manifold.

This is like a master class in diesel performance. A lot of people build stuff, but can't explain why they do what they're doing. And a lot of the times they're mistaken when they do try to explain. When Gale talks, his stuff seems to work, is understandable, and reproducible. Thank you Mr. Banks for your work.

ALL Mr Banks' videos should be required viewing for ANYONE interested in modifying internal combustion engines - not just diesel but petrol/gasoline, actual gas (propane, CNG or hydrogen) engines because most of the basic concepts and details are applicable to them all. Volumetric efficiency, charge temperature and density, pumping losses, optimising parts, etc. I've been around engines for over 40 years, off and on, and while I'm aware of most of what he says, there's always something that I forgot or hadn't considered - these videos are pure gold! About the only thing I'd like to see - if I missed it, please correct me with linkies - is the importance of getting the valve seat area shapes correct for optimising low lift airflow, as this is more critical with diesels due to limitations in duration and lift that can be used. I've picked up a lot of low lift flow working in this area, and significant torque gains, as the valve opening is effectively increased from the unshrouding of the seats themselves.

Water meth an air density is dream come true, this is where I want to see it go ;) Combine that with the charge air cooler, I highly suspect the density will be prime for going much, more on this. But the drive pressure will rise to boost pressure, we might be headed back to a smaller scavenge ratio? Maybe then we can have a look again at revided exhaust manifolds with some tubular flowing beasts and get the scavenge happening again with some long, high velocity exhaust header pipes. Sorry I got carried away, but I am really into this series, good stuff Gale and thanks so much for all of the real data that is proving theories from many decades of speculation.

The way you guys at banks analyze engine performance from a whole system view reminds me of an aerospace propulsion class I took in college. I remember it being one of the most tedious and challenging courses in my whole degree. Working through all the stages of a jet engine to figure out what’s coming out the other end was brutal but one of the most gratifying feelings in the world when you got it right. You guys must be elated when your analysis comes to life on the dyno.

This is amazing. So you used positive pressure to replace what used to be negative pressure so there really is only the space you need for the engine function. And the same would apply to scavenge. It already has limited space to begin with instead of dead space as previous. Simple flow dynamics lads and Gale you are a genius sir!!! Hats off to you!!!
