0:00 Patch 1.07 Gravity Bolt
0:53 Patch 1.08 Gravity Bolt
IT NEEDED A NERF - BUT NOT THIS DRASTIC.
Previously up to Patch 1.07, it took 3 casts dealing a stat maxed & buffed 8337 Damage to stagger the Golem. This costs 39 FP (or 30 with the Carian Filigreed Crest).
As of Patch 1.08, it now takes 10 casts dealing 32,655 Damage to deal the same poise damage after the nerf to Gravity Bolt. This costs 130 FP (or 100 with the Carian Filigreed Crest).
This also means that most enemies that you used to be able to stagger before will die before being staggered now - which doesn't match the role of a STR/INT Colossal Weapon.
Given that this is a weapon that has a weight of 21.5, and requires 34 STR, 12 DEX, & 20 INT to even utilize its Ash of War and that's a significant investment.
While the Gravity Bolt was an extremely powerful Ash of War that needed to be tuned back - this massive nerf makes it lose all of its identity. Gravity Magic requires Int, but given that it throws physical objects, those deal almost entirely Physical Damage with high Poise Damage like large physical weapons.
For comparison, the Ruins Greatsword has a weight of 23, and requires 50 STR & 16 INT to use its Ash of War, Waves of Destruction. In 5 casts at a cost of 125 FP (95 with CFC), you can stagger the Golem. This Ash has a longer cast time, but it also physically knocks down all small opponents, can hit multiple targets per cast, and has a longer range than Gravity Bolt.
Gravity Bolt initially did more Poise Damage than Wave of Destruction to make up for being very single target focused, and having a smaller range. Now post-1.08 IT LESS EFFECTIVE THAN WAVES OF DARKNESS - which means that it's not making up for the other advantages that that Ash provides.
It needs to be able to Poise Break before just the raw damage kills everything, otherwise it's losing a core piece of its identity.
I have a separate, much longer breakdown that shows how fast you can stagger with the Fallingstar Beast Jaw's normal attacks against a range of enemies, and how Gravity Bolt simply feels out of place now in how ineffective it is to deal proportional Poise damage, which you can see here: • Fallingstar Beast Jaw ...

I can’t believe they screwed over the two AoW and that poise damage as basically the only thing going for them. FromSoft sucks at balancing.

Flame of the Redmanes & Gravity Bolt both deserved to be tuned back a bit from where they were because of how exploitable they were to spam, but the nerfs felt _a bit too much._ In the past, Bloodhound Step felt like it got a good balance to repetitive spam casts and falloff, and we've seen overnerfs followed by buffs to dial in overused abilities like with Rivers of Blood. When patches get released publicly they get exponentially more hours of data on the changes than if they had a whole team QA doing nothing but testing them for a year straight. FromSoft have been significantly adjusting the entirety of Poise overall, so I wouldn't be TOO surprised if they ended up coming back and adjusting those again in the future (which I'm hoping for to get them back into a place where they feel like they match and still have utility). It's also important to remember that patches like this are a really small part of the work they're doing, even though they're the only thing that the playerbase end-users consistently see. All those changes ALSO have to get tested against DLC and other content so we only get to see a part of the full picture at any given time. It's easy to be critical, but it's a complex thing to do - speaking as someone who's worked in software testing & QA for the last 15 years. That's why I try to showcase and document things like this in detail as it's what I'd want someone to do if I were in their place.

@@PierceArner I know balancing is a difficult thing to deal with. I just just don’t understand why most devs immediate thought these days is to to take something strong and proceed to make it useless. That’s just going in the opposite extreme. I guess I should also mention I’m not much a fan of balancing single player content the way you would multiplayer. I see no problem with being able to obliterate an AI if you want to. If you don’t wanna be OP you have the option to just not use the broken stuff but that doesn’t mean it should be ruined for people who just wanna have fun. Still though I appreciate someone actually documenting this stuff since the actual patch notes Bamco releases are generally pretty vague on what actually gets changed

@@TREVORVADER While I generally agree about single-player content, it's also important to remember a lot of bugs and other unintended strengths and behaviours just… can't get caught by QA the way they get caught upon release. Just the sheer number of human hours of a release day will eclipse the combined playtime of everyone on the dev team for the whole of development. A lot of things weren't intended to be quite the way they were. I've recently been playing through the PS5 1.00 on-disc build because it's the earliest build of the game and… that is a MASSIVELY different game in countless little ways where a lot of description text isn't finalized or are just flat-out different, the merchants sell totally different things, enemies appear in different places. All sorts of crazy stuff. That's just to say that Gravity Bolt was likely never intended to be QUITE that strong. It was matched to poise output of Colossal Weapons, but it needed to be dialed back. It's always hard to gauge an ideal fix, and it's usually bound to be better safe than sorry. That's especially true when the majority of work is going into Shadow of the Erdtree and they have to keep parity with changes that ALSO gain benefits of other things that we don't yet have access to that are single-player-focused. While I still lament what got done for this weapon, there's a lot more complexity to the why and how that's just the reality of development and how many hours you can devote to any one thing.

Next up: glintblade phalanx. I suspect it's erroneously been doing the total poise damage of all blades on each blade hit since release. It's the only way the discrepancy between the spell and the ash makes sense.

Same here. Since Colossal Weapons can double-proc the HP/FP recovery from critical hits, I designed a whole build theme around it. It's not _totally_ dead since the weapon itself can still stagger, but that intentional utility of the Ash is totally gone. It just sucks since there are ashes that can still stagger CRAZY fast, and the Ruins Greatsword now has about the same staggering power to FP ratio - but it can full knock down small enemies and hit multiple targets, too.

Oh ok, so straight swords now stagger more than this gravity weapon. Ok dokie. I started playing ER quite recently and just made an INT character. Looks like there's absolutely no reason to spec strength after the change, two handing DMGS is all I have left then.

No, it's still a colossal weapon and can stagger the golem in a couple charged R2 hits in almost no time at all. The stagger potential was ONLY removed from its Ash of War, but the Ash still has a vertical attack targeting and is quite useful, so I still use it despite no longer being able to have my main build design for it. Carian Phalanx still has insane stagger as an Ash of War even while this specific one got heavily nerfed. The reason I used this weapon before is that the talismans that restore HP/FP on critical hit proc twice for Colossal Weapons, so I was running a build focused on quick stagger and recovering. The Fallingstar Beast Jaw still has the longest reach and one of the highest damage outputs of the Colossal Weapons, but especially for INT/STR builds. INT/STR is my primary playstyle still even after essentially maxing out everything else, so even though this one Ash got nerfed it's no reason to avoid focusing on Strength as there're still a TON of other options and this is still a viable damage Ash, it just won't be a path to staggering anymore.

Yeah, I think they took the poise damage from 33 to 10. Even if they'd dropped it to only dealing 20 or 17 it would still be usable at a higher cost, but it is _USELESS_ as a stagger tool now. The fact that every _OTHER_ type of attack with the weapon can stagger an opponent in just a couple hits for 0FP really makes the Ash lose all of its unique utility identity, and feel weak compared to every other hit. It killed my favourite STR/INT build, which was focused on using it to stagger, because colossal weapons can proc the critical HP/FP drain effect twice. Fallingstar Beast Jaw was the only weapon really uniquely suited to doing that, and now… there's really nothing that fills that niche at all.
