The very first Corvette came out in 1953, however the early models lacked power. By 1955, a rumbling V8 was added to the portfolio. However to boost sales, a few wins at the races could drive the message home they felt. And by 1957 a racing concept Corvette X64 named Corvette SS was introduced, that also won a quick win at the Sebrings. However changes in local regulations meant Chevrolet had to stop factory sponsored racing works. The Corvette SS chassis quickly changed hands and GM's own design chief Bill Mitchel took hold of the chassis to develop a racer under the label of a private team. Bill still received ample support from the factory team, only thing being his new racer could not wear the Chevrolet or the Corvette name.
Bill, being an avid fisherman, chose Stingray name to label this new creation. A design concept and a name that later on became synonymous to curvy Corvette generations down the line. At the factory it was regarded as the X87. This car went on to become a great showpiece and integral part for Corvette's history, and entered in the automotive hall of fame.
