I'm glad you think it looks cool! Although I understand what you're saying, this record is not only related to the number of links, but that the chain runs continuously yet in 3 separate planes, all having to be achieved through 90-degree twists of the chain. It's a challenge of engineering, but also of making a beautiful and satisfying end product, not just of setting a record. I hope this helps make the project more exciting to you!

I made my own LEGO film projector as a mid-teen. I used strips of notebook paper as my film and as many Light Bricks as I had for the projector bulb. I had no idea about the sprocket system on a real projector so it didn't actually work correct. But I do now (Thanks @TechnolgyConnections ).

Thanks so much! It takes almost 3 minutes at the slow speed, and maybe 40 seconds or so at the fastest speed

I saw a similar concept with a tracked technic vehicle (using the same type of tracks from 8043) that had one massive loop of track that crossed over on the top to make two parallel sections of tracks to drive on.

the mechanism could have benefited from a couple chain tensioners (which you could do with rubber bands or suspension pieces)

LEGO 3D Art is a great idea. There are instructions on the net on how to make 3D-ASCII Art so the same rules would work with different colored bricks.

Add a gear on some kind of mechanism so you can add a spring to it to tension the entire chain. Currently its quite loose as seen by some gears just not even having the chain on it constantly.

I still have all mine but the pieces are so primitive compared to what is available now. I stopped collecting in 1983 when Technic bricks were still called Expert Builder in the USA. I have pieces and printed materials from when LEGO was distributed by The Samsonite Corporation before InterLego was a thing.

the twists made me think that you could pretty easily make the chain into a mobius strip as well! (though i don't know if that would work, or if lego technic chains can only be driven from one side)

The first thing that came to mind was the title but to the tune of the battle of New Orleans, and I misread 1184 as 1814: There was 1,814 Lego chain links, All tangled up into one big machine.
