• 1/2 Wondrous Obsession...
First broadcast: Jul 2015.
Episode 14/18 The story behind a collecting craze that began in Renaissance Europe.
As the popularity of collecting fairs and Pinterest would attest, we are a nation of magpie obsessions. Renaissance expert Professor Nandini Das reveals the story behind the Cabinet of Curiosities - the original collecting craze that began in Renaissance Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, and which is experiencing a surprising revival in the work of contemporary artists today.

This was such a joy to watch. As a collector myself, it's so fascinating to see its beginnings. The story behind an object is always what brings its value - especially for someone who can't afford much! 🙂

This is quite inspiring. I am going to collect curiosities. I might do it without spending any money, just with things I can find or old things from charity shops etc. I might suggest it to my friends too. It could be an entertainment for us over winter. Or we could make things maybe.

I took inspiration from the old time "freak shows" and made some lovely (terrifying) curiosities. A "hatchling" made from an egg shell and baby doll bits with a lizard legs and tail etc, a "shrunken head" I made from a dollar tree skull along some small alabaster jars I picked up at a flea market ($1 for the pair, so they're small), a carved wooden needle holder from Bulgaria (thrift shop) You can have so much fun making weird things and collecting

I miss the traditional format of documentaries that concentrated solely on the subject matter using slides of book plates & photographs. Typically these documentaries had less emphasis on the narrator and non relevant scenery and not one minute was wasted.

Ahhhhh ! The Obsession with Curiosities, Collections, and Collectibles feeds that part of us, whether to create an effect and reaction on others or to ourselves. Why ? The Human Condition ! A material world of Sight, Smell, Taste, Touch, and Sound that brings about recall in one's self or others in that certain way.

I'm envious of those of an earlier age who could arrive at foreign shores and see a culture untouched by another; by contrast to today's homogenization and evisceration of unique cultures with unique art and architecture.

good point, it was mindblowing in a way we cant imagine, of course also it was very dangerous too, not like now where tourists are greeted happily, in fact there was probably great trepidation upon arriving in an unknown or barely known land, something we also cant imagine today.

There is more to the early origins of this than just collecting. It is linked to the ancient Art of Memory, particularly the Memory Theatre of Giulio Camillo, who was one of the famous famous men in Europe in the 16th century. See Chapter 6 in Frances Yates' The Art of Memory.

one can create something pleasing to eyes and mind there is nothing bad in that either, its another form of information knowledge detached from what is socially relevant to masses, but some of us want to take care of health which starts in gut and then it effects everything in your growth, in creating new 'food courts" not for just profits but for health of tired working masses.

"Renaissance Europe in the 16th and 17th century..." but mostly fueled with riches stolen from other cruelly enslaved countries, many of which are still paying the price to this day. The presenter should know this well. I get mad when movies, documentaries, etc glorify Britain's terrible past, presenting as nothing bad happened.

Please understand. If you wish to share something then plesse allow the camera to remain on the object much longer. Let me see for longer. I’m not interested in seeing you throughout. You sre not the curiosity. I am fed up with documentaries that centre on the presenter more than the article. Talk by all means, but while the camera is focussing on the curiosities. Thank you.
