@SolarWebsite7 жыл бұрын
Tether it to a 30m power cable? It could stay up forever and provide lighting for whatever you need to do at night. Just lock it to a GPS position.
@spencergeorge49417 жыл бұрын
Tigerle these are actually used extensively in search and rescue. The real limitation is that searching tends to slow down for the night because of the crew's safety. A system like this would have the ability to scan hundreds of acres a flight though!
@spectrHz7 жыл бұрын
SolarWebsite It has to lift the weight of the cable though, and as he said, it uses 1800W, so you would need some very heavy gauge cable, which would weigh hundreds of pounds.
@SolarWebsite7 жыл бұрын
While 1,8kW is quite a lot power indeed, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need hundreds of pounds of cable. Using as high a voltage as possible reduces the current, and that reduces the required cable diameter. With all the LEDs in series the current would be no higher than 30 amps. If you could live with some voltage drop over the line (just start out with a higher voltage) you wouldn't need all that thick of a wire. Flying "just" 1 kW of LEDs (which is still insane :-) ), would reduce the cable weight even more.
@spectrHz7 жыл бұрын
I think you would find 100ft of any cable capable of high current, or higher voltage loads would weigh more than the batteries would. Even if you were in the best case of 30 amps like you said, it would end up being heavier than the batteries. Plus your limited to 30m, which isn't really a whole lot, it would probably be more economical just to mount a light on a boom truck.

As a child of 8 or 9, maybe younger, I have always had this fascination of installing electricity into areas for which you would never expect to find it. The climax of which would be the sudden and unexpected illumination of a dark desolate wooded area. Immediately the dark foreboding wooded area would seem safe so illuminated while the surrounding black unlit areas all around were now the uncertain, uneasy places. Once dark places with disturbing shapes in the moonlight shadows could be oddly shaped trees or just as easily terrifying monsters. But once I brought illumination I controlled what would be what in that little spot of nowhere. I once acquired an old failing 12 volt car battery. I connected it to my dad's battery charger and charged it overnight. I can't remember how but I carried it on my bicycle about a mile or so from my home to a giant cedar tree that grew in a wooded area. With a rope I managed to hoist the battery up to the top of that cedar tree and secured it. Several buddies were with me so I wasn't alone. We all went home, had dinner then waited for the sun to go down. At dusk we got on our bikes and all met under the big tree. Two or three of us climbed up the tree and smoked cigarettes we bought at the SDI market for 50 cents a pack. Odd the computer keyboard has no (Cent Symbol) key. Typewriters always had a cent key. But, oh well. That was 45 years ago and nobody cared about kids buying cigarettes except our parents. When I finally deemed it dark I took an automobile high beam 12V headlight and two pieces of wire and connected it to the battery. UNBELIEVABLE! To us it was as if we had created light. With the light pointed down it made the tree and all its branches seem magical. To say that we were excited was the understatement of the year. After climbing down from the tree we discovered an equally magical and much larger area that we could actually see in the night. We all explored the boundaries excitedly exclaiming over and over, "wow I can see all the way over here, and here, and here."It seemed like all night but in actuality the battery started losing its charge within an hour and the light went from as bright as the sun to that of a candle. Over the years I had the honor of electrifying and illuminating many places where such a thing had never been before. I still get an inkling of that initial excitement whenever put light somewhere it hasn't been before. I would imagine you guys with the futuristic drones, space age batteries and the greatest invention in the last fifty years, the LED get a feeling similar to what I experienced. In this video looking at the snow in the trees and rock cliffs all so magnificently illuminated at night always casts everything into that of the surreal. Beautiful but otherworldly. Keep up the good work. Your path seems to be leading you toward some life saving potential applications with your lights in the sky. Power consumption and battery life are always going to be a nagging problem. I might suggest looking into using laser light from the ground directed to a receptacle on each drone as a possible means to charge while in stationary flight. Could be a way for the drones to stay aloft for hours at a time. I have seen experimental models using laser energy beamed from the ground to propel them upwards. If that can be done then surely simply charging batteries or maybe controlled release capacitors is possible. Or send electricity to the drones using something similar to a Tesla coil. There might be an issue establishing a satisfactory earth connection but I'm sure you guys will figure it out rather quickly. When you do and perfect a safe reliable and effective high power light that can be deployed almost instantly and stay aloft all night then you will all be, what they call, rich. Enjoy the ride. Wish I was there. KPE

The last time I did something like this (about 2 years ago and not such power) It was just after dusk and I caused a traffic jam on the nearby road. One guy pulled up with 4 people in the car, they all got out to look at what they thought was a UFO and about 15 more cars did likewise. I very quietly landed and crept away. There was nothing in the newspaper the following day and heard no UFO reports :-)
