@@henrylivingstone2800 1871 is not a magic number. Being German goes back long before any "German" state. Even the Romans spoke about the Germans. In Romania there are Germans for hundreds of years, there are "Volga Germans", Moravian Germans and many more.

@@noelpucarua2843 Yes but the term German or Germani as from the original Latin has been used by the romans for centuries to refer to a many different cultures and ethnic peoples, it was first designated for tribes people and then later on came to refer to the people of a particular region. And even then the designation “German” was never used by the people themselves only by outsiders as a means of identifying their people. And considering the differences in culture between the German states due to centuries of separated cultural growth, one could definitely differentiate between any two states. So before reunification especially in the 16th century it would be more appropriate to refer to whatever “Germanic” visitor as the actual German state they were from as opposed to the blanket term German, considering at the time they weren’t merely states but fully fledged countries.
