In this video I will walk through what I learned on how to weave and make a hat out of cattail leaves.
This is how to start the weave. Below is a clearer breakdown of the weaving pattern used:
"(1/3) Essential Weaving Patterns for Making a Cattail Hat" • (1/3) Essential Weavin...
Tools & Materials:
100 approx. cattail leaves at least 33" long and 3/8" wide
Cotton twine, waxed nylon, or heavy-duty thread
2 or more clothespins
Large needle
Measuring tape
Scissors
Note:
This hat is custom to the circumference of my head at about 23.25"
So you will need about 100 leaves at 33 -36" long at about 3/8" wide
At these dimensions to complete the hat I needed to weave about 20' of length.
You will need to measure your own head to get the proper length of woven strap.

Your hat looks so nice. I'm a big fan of weaving with cattails, wanted to in the past but never did. I definitely want to try this year...

Great series idea! I'll have to come back and watch all of these next summer (the cattails are officially done here). I just did a few videos on eating cattails recently, and am planning on continuing the series next year with the many uses of cattail.

Thank you! I think I could get out and get a bundle before they get too far gone in my region as well. I have entertained the notion of using leather strips to to the same thing - until the cattails come back next year ;)

Hi, thank you for this video series. I've read a bit on another web site (www.nativetech.org/cordage/index.html) about harvesting time being in the late summer: is that what you mean by the season? I'm writing a novel in which the protag, I hope, grabs some cattails and fingerweaves himself a belt on the move (an escaped slave showing others through the outskirts of Baltimore into the City back in 1838): if that would be realistic? Best regards, and many thanks for this excellent video series (and Nice Hat!!), Shira

Yes, that would be correct! Harvest from late Spring throughout the Summer, by Fall and Winter the leaves become too brittle. However, it does depend on the region...I am in zone 4 the Upper Midwest. Incidentally the lady I learned this from is half Chinese and half Ugandan...she experimented with cattails (Typha spp.) up here when she moved here years ago and found they were a suitable substitute for the plants (palm leaves[?]) she grew up with in Uganda. Good luck with your novel! :-D

@@theurbanabo Thanks! Ok, so I'm assuming, then, that the season is longer maybe by a month or so in the Baltimore area, especially south of B'more, in the Chesapeake Bay areas of southern MD. But I'll also make sure that my protag. always has some cattails drying out... Many thanks again! Stay safe, Shira Dest.

@@theurbanabo ps: may I credit you in the eventual novel (www.goodreads.com/questions/163204-what-are-you-currently-working-on), when it is published in some way/shape or form (hopefully traditional in the next two years or so)? Shira
