Intro video for this project: • 1:9 Scale B-17G 'Sweet...
This week: Spent some time planning and testing equipment for the 'Sweet Pea' main landing gear. As noted in the video I've made a few small deviations from the full scale so I can use readily available hardware.
I'm really happy with how the prototype came out and I'm now 100% confident that this setup will work great for this model. I'm going to keep an eye out for a lighter pillow block solution, but for now I'm going to consider this task complete and move on to airframe planning and construction.

Love the video! I'm hoping to something similar. How did you figure out which part number on the robot struts to use?

Thanks! I really need to get updates shot. I'm now at the point that I need to finish the version for flight. 2020 was pretty much a bust for building. I'm just lucky that we're healthy and work is busy. Hope you're well and building/flying!

I like this video I am thinking about building one of this but the retracts are holding me up when you get these working would it be possible I could get a set of drawings from you and what parts you use Thanks

This project suffered a lot of delays but I'm almost done with the final version that will be used for flight. After that wrapping up the build will be relatively easy :-)

Con-memorable work, I wonder what wingspan you have, keeping in mind that it looks beefy!! and heavy! (Building light what one of the hardest unlearning process in my way to become an RC scratch builder..My background is in heavy rigging & iron security systems.)

I agree on the weight... I'm hoping I can find lighter pillow blocks. BUT... the wingspan of the model is 138" and similarly sized models are around 55lbs. I am hoping for 35ish, but I will be flying from grass fields so I need to keep those stresses in mind. I know what you mean about building light though. It really is a challenge with any model. Hopefully I can keep this model as light as possible while still cramming in loads of details :-)

The billet that you drilled to pass thru and use as a hinge point, can be made of hollow sheet metal, as well as the hinge shaft can be an aluminum pipe. Best wishes on your project. May I ask if you have customers that pay you for this type of custom projects!! I'm trying to find an other line of work, my machine shop business is drying...

Three and a bit years on, have you experienced any galling on the aluminium shaft and your home made pivot at the top of the strut? Ali to ali is rarely a good choice.

You really need a machine vice for your drilling stand. There's no accuracy in holding it by hand and not safe.

Thanks. After a few comments on this video I did pick one up and use it for this type of stuff now. Always learning :-)

Maybe try to do some drop tests with the test stand?

I've been considering how best to do the tests. The issue right now is that the test stand isn't particularly rigid against twisting. When I've done compression tests on the struts the gear stays solid but the wood plates twist and flex a bit. I will likely need to build a test stand with structures more like the final model for any drop test to be really accurate. Maybe I can beef up the structure a bit and do the drop tests. We'll see.

Nice work... get a vise, not vise grips!

Fair point. My vice only real vice is bolted to the bench and can't be used with the drill press. Would definitely help with precision stuff.
