While it has been over 8 1/2 years since I originally wrote this article in 2010, www.whitetailhabitatsolutions..., the message is still the same! The #1 bowhunting practice tip that you can use this season is that longer is better when you are at the archery range. Shooting longer allows you to stretch your limits and become better at your preferred bowhunting distance. Even if your goal is to never shoot over 30 yards in the field, you can deliver a much greater ethical shot when the moment of truth arrives, if you have been practicing at a much greater distance. When practicing for this bow season make sure to improve your own personal bowhunting distance limits, by practicing at a distance a lot further than you would have ever imagined. The #1 bowhunting practice tip is that you can never get better at a shorter distance, without ever practicing at a longer distance!

Good advice. It's like shooting pool . You'll never get better if you don't play someone better than yourself. And practice, practice, practice!!!

Another great tip is to practice low light shots. Go out and shoot at sunset until dark. It's amazing how as the light fades groups open up, especially at longer distances. Many of deer I've shot have been in that twilight time after sunset prior to dark.

This is one of the best things a bow hunter can do yet so few do. I am always amazed at how many people don't practice before season starts. Maybe fling a couple arrows under perfect conditions and call it good day before opener. I shoot year round, and this season I am adding tree stands to my hunting methods, always hunted from ground blind or spot and stalked. So I add practice from tree stands to the mix along with long shots. I also practice shooting through small gaps in brush and trees. All of this helps me focus on the target better, specially shooting through gaps in brush and trees with a breeze. I hold my draw longer, breath smoother. And as a result more accurate. Practice further than you hunt and do it when conditions aren't perfect, windy days are a favorite of mine to practice.

Practicing in the woods is a good idea for sure. Helps you pay better attention to what your arrows flight path is, and not the straight line you are aiming on. I once shot a 3D target range with a 40lb bow due to a mechanical error with my regular bow. Talk about paying attention to limbs and flight paths 😆. Was a fun day to be sure!

Long range shooting absolutely improves concentration, and your stability of the bow arm. Been doing it for years, and it is the best simple tip for becoming a better shooter. My brothers and I used to love standing at the target and throwing each other's arrows at varying angles and distances to stick in the ground. We then would shoot them from where they stuck. Good for judging distances, and learning how to aim with your sights for varying in between distances. Happy hunting all!

I only shoot my broad heads. I’ve shot and won a few tournaments myself. Mostly second place but that was good enough for me. All the prizes didn’t matter to me it was making it through on one arrow no more. Your exactly right brother great advice. 30 yards is my limit I don’t shoot any farther than that at deer or targets.

I agree a 100% i practice at 60-80 it makes 20,30,40 yds a walk in the park. And Uncle Ted Says "aim small miss small" That is the only 2 things that anybody really needs to worry about after they get their form and stance dialed in.

He's right, and you need a rangefinder, a simple one like halo or Bushnell is fine just make sure it has an angel compensator built in you don't want the ones that are just for straight line of sight, those are for golf and such. Always practice with your broadheads, field tips and broadheads rarely hit exactly the same spot. Don't take longer shots than you are comfortable with and always check your string before hunting season even comes close to starting, if you need to replace it do it during summer and the string will be set during the hunting season. I like the new ghost strings, there the best, or America's Best Bowstrings, their good to. Have fun wear a safety harness and good luck, if I forgot anything ask me and I'll answer. I only hunt with a bow, and love it.

Good tips, problem is this is what I do already. One thing I do is I put up yard markers in my shooting lanes so I don't have to use a range finder when hunting. Also I'm trying the ezv sight this year, have you heard of it & if so what do you think about it?

good tip. second best tip is angle of the shot how high your stand is an the yardage of the deer could mean shooting high or it could be the difference in getting one lung or two saw the elevated platform it's probably good to shoot some off of that too.

Hi Bobby thank you! I use a Black Gold sight...the rush. 3 pins and I use the larger sized pins for hunting. I hunt in a lot of treestands where the distance can change quickly so I love having a 20-30-40 yard setup. Those Black Gold are extremely well built and I like how the housing darkens in the darker hours of bowhunting while making the pins dimmer/smaller

@ImBoones
@ImBoones 5 жыл бұрын
Rangefinder, lumanocks arrows and crossbow scope. Practice have my bow set for 30 yards then it can shoot up to 70 yards there’s lines in the scope that are at ten yards. Put trail markers out at every ten yards so you only have to set range once that’s helped my archery success over the years good luck 👍
@wolfpack4128
@wolfpack4128 4 жыл бұрын
@@ImBoones a crossbow can drill a target at 70 yards. It will also wound most deer outside 40 yards just like a bow. The problem is the biggest variable in bow hunting is the fact the arrow or bolt take a long time to get to the target. 0.4 seconds is an eternity and that's only a 40 yard shot.

I am a neophyte to the sport (2 seasons under my belt) I don't know what you mean when you refer to being "over bowed". Can you clarify that for me? I love your videos and insights and look forward to learning more.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ben and for sure. Overbowed is simply too many pounds of draw weight. It makes the Archer have great difficulty when drawing the bow...especially when cold and nervous. Sometimes it makes it so that they can't even pull their bow back in the treestand and at the same time they have to make so much movement to get the bow back, an overbowed person can spook deer while drawing.

You know I am a loaner always have been, So I practice at least 4 times a week for 8 months , Last year I went bow hunting with two guy's that are very fungal I sluppy walkie talkies among other stuff but really piss me off was the two guy's I hunted with they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn , because they waited until the last minute to practice, I was in a tree stand 18 feet high when a 3 1/2 doe run on my left side about 25 yards I waited and executed a shot in the upper shoulder area came through her stomach and cut her leg as well she run towards my ex friend on his bate pile and drop dead , November 13th 2020 , the next day around 5 ish I am in my tree stand 18 feet high and I am right-handed on my right side I knowndest a deer coming towards me on my right side ,I switched hands using a crossbow 45 to 50 yards away left-handed executed watched my lighted nocks lit up after I pulled the trigger and watch the deer jumped so high I waited ten minutes called my ex friends but before the came I climb down walked over where my arrow was stuck in the grow there were hair and blood on the arrow it was a button buck heavier the heck but my experience pay off November 14th 2020 my ex friends couldn't do what I did because they never practice

@dannygroves6764

I would say either a Bushnell or halo is fine, you don't need to spend several hundred dollars on one. I've got a few halos and that's all I need. Remember to buy one with an angle compensator built in so when you aim at your target it compensates for being up in the tree or on a hill. That should get it done for you.

Personally, I'd reccomend going to the gym and working on some weight training. Nothing crazy maybe 2 or 3 days a week pull ups help strengthen those muscles a lot, but any back/shoulder/chest exercises will help with drawing your bow, also dont forget to stretch your shoulders and relax before and after practice sessions, the little things add up over time
@brettconway4789
@brettconway4789 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed with other comment work out. Even simply doing 20 push ups sit ups and pullups then stretching after will work. Get a 30 pound bow at a pawnshop for cheap and work up. Proper form puts the energy into your back while holding your shot so a lower weight will get your muscles used to the way they get used.

Whitetail Habitat Solutions So what is your number one tip ? genius. My number one tip is to make your point iand stop rambling... I did this I was a professional blah blah blah so you should listen to me... i’m self-absorbed and think I am the best but maybe ask a friend and you too can be as good as me buddy Oh and my greatest tip that I finally get to us to practice at double the yardage that you actually plan to shoot at even though that is complete nonsense maybe focus on the yardage that you plan to shoot at and also beyond so that you’re comfortable with shooting at double the distance to practice for something that you’re not going to shoot at potential he is completely asinine!!! I plan to hunt elk in the mountains with long-range shots and somebody help me set up so that I can start practicing at 200 yards even though I’ll have a completely different set up at 100 or 60 yards or preferably 30 You’re a complete idiot stop taking precious air from those that can benefit from it more 😍🤪😜🤩

Whitetail Habitat Solutions A bunch a incoherent ramblings just to try and make the point that if you shoot at a longer distance it will show inconsistencies in your shot and help you hone them in. But in reality if you’re going hunt wild game you should practice enough at the distance is your plan to shoot that you rely on nothing more than muscle memory when it’s time to take your shot. I still think you might need buddy bumble 🤬 to help you out. I guess the fact that you think you’re intelligent and everybody else needs help got me a little agitated...
