I love how unpretentious this man is, he's just a normal guy. His home is a bit messy, his dog is a bit noisy, there's no fancy editing. Just a guy trying to show us how you can be creative on a budget and good tips when times are hard.

I don't know why I watch these videos, but they are really addictive. I think the thing I like about them the most is this guy is just straight to the point, no ads/sponsors, no clickbait, no stupid gawping mouth thumbnails. Maybe I'm weird for coming back to watch this multiple times. But from the very savvy selection of items to the polite, unobtrusive yet very effective urban scavenging, to finding those apples (and having the expertise to know they could still be edible), to scoring the free coffee from trash, and finally being able to combine these disparate cheap (or free) ingredients into 3 tasty meals that each look like they were each deliberately planned and shopped for, I find it totally inspirational. Like a near-perfect example of cleverness and resourcefulness resulting in triumph.

Many years ago, when I was extremely poor, there was a TV programme on late at night that showed you how to feed yourself with dirt-cheap ingredients. I think it was aimed at stoners but it saved my life 😋

One jacket potatoe is 11p and a tin of beans is 23p from Aldi This is two meals - Egg on roll (or egg Mayo) And, jacket potatoe and beans. Full Total £0.59p One loose Tomatoe is £0.7p and a bag of mozzarella is £0.32p both from Aldi (this can be put on a roll and grilled) Full total £0.98p 2p change!!

Okay literally everyone complaining about this being “offensive”. This is genuinely educational, I’m 18, living alone, no education or a job, my parents were both dead by the time I was 16 and I had no life experience. This video and the others like it have helped me budget, made me realise where I needed to spend my money and what wasn’t necessary buying. I keep coming back to watch it when I end up short at the end of the month, or even fortnight. I’m living off of 180 a month, add on rent, council tax and other bills I need to pay, some weekly. So coming from someone who is struggling this video is not offensive, it’s educational.

Not only were very smart with your decisions at the store and with condiments but you went so far as to use waste as resources and scavenge outside on the beach and in foresty areas. Well done. It reminds me of a time I was dead broke and I was living on; Pearl Barley, which is very cheap and goes a LONG way. Chicken frames from the chicken shop and 'Day Old' bread from the Vietnamese bakery. $.50 packet+ $2per bag and $1.50 per largish bag respectively.. That was $4. and would last several days as soup, mainly with the 'usable' bread. It wasn't really 'day' old, most of it was mouldy. The birds got those ones.

The idea for lunch is so completely foreign to me that I can't even imagine what those flavors would be like mixed together, or what fish paste tastes like at all even on its own. But I wish I could go to the shop in Britain just so I could exactly recreate that meal and see what it tastes like! I'm also very interested to see what mushy peas taste like now, especially in relation to fish and chips!

In my opinion, this is the best of these food challenge videos so far. (Meaning, I enjoy watching it, I like the craft and recoursefullness, the kindness of strangers, foraging and the end results being more or less successful.) Also found the editing being good, mainly the pace and where it's cut.

The prices there are insane. 15p for a can of peas. Thats roughly 19C USD. You can't get a can of anything like that for less than 75 cents here on the West Coast of the USA. For that amount of money he spent you'd be lucky to get half the items. Great video though.

Just stumbled upon Atomic Shrimp and am super impressed. I will be subscribing. I’m British, lived most of my life in the US, where I worked as a Registered Dietitian, now am back in the UK where I manage a charity shop. I know poverty on both sides of the Atlantic, and as a student in the US, spent more on my dog’s food than on my own. (Lived far better upon graduation and a job! ) I’m very grateful that I never had to eat on £1 per day on either side of the Atlantic. But it was close at times. I found the video very inspiring. Loved that he is very concerned about food safety-no oysters out of potentially highly polluted waters, and the same for watercress. High risk of liver fluke (at least in the part of the US I used to live). I’ll look forward to similar videos when he can forage at different parts of the year. I make a mean nettle soup, but cheat and use chicken stock. Thank you.

I've been laid off for a couple of months. Managed to find a couple weeks of work before getting dropped again. Unemployment insurance covers rent and utilities, but I don't want to just burn through my reserves. Lately my weeknight meals have been very heavily "Bread with soup". The soup is just cheap stuff from a can because I do not enjoy cooking, but the bread is from the overflow of a nearby bakery and is excellent for dunking. A couple dollars has me in bread for over a week, easily. I'm lucky to have that bakery so close-by. It's just a couple of miles away, a half hour's walk there and another half hour back. They also have par-baked loaves and buns. If all I have to do is fire up the oven and throw things in, it's not a problem at all, and it's really nice having fresh, hot bread at home. The bakery smells like grown-up candyland.

It's unbelievable how £1 can provide one's full 3 meals! Especially one doing extreme belt-tightening!

Love this! Did you know you can use the oyster shell in your kettle as a desacaler if you are in a hard water area. Worth grabbing a half shell for that even if you can’t eat any of the actual oysters
