Starting a 1996 Ford F350 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel in Alaska in 1 degree F subzero temperatures. This truck has been good to me, starts by itself without being plugged in down to about -25 F. It's amazing what good glow plugs and glowplug relays, good injectors, good batteries and a good starter will do. I always get request to see the truck do a cold start because folks don't believe it's possible, so here's another one...

I was stationed at Ft. Wainwright in the early 1980s. I can vouch for the cold temperatures. But 1 degree is a warm day in Alaska in the winter. My guess is at normal central Alaska winter temperatures of -30 to -50 or colder, you would maybe get a have revolution of crankshaft and then maybe a solenoid click after that.

The whine sound from under the hood is the power steering pump 'churning' up the cold power steering fluid. usually once it warms up the whining stops and the steering wheel moves smoothly. thanks for the great vids - cheers from Canada.

As long as your glowplugs, glow plug relay are good and have good batteries and starter you shouldn't have too many issues with those 7.3s. Didn't have to mess with ours all winter think it got plugged in a few times and it really didn't need it. Although it will help the truck start easier. And helps with heater core blowing warm air into cab sooner. Coming from Michigan. 300k+ on the clock.

Used to start these all the time in the cold like this. The things you need for success in order of priority: 1 Good batteries that hold a charge when it's this cold out. Not enough cranking speed, not enough heat to fire. If they are bad, you're done. 2 Working glow plug system. This includes mostly the high current solenoid, wiring and connections, and the glow plugs themselves. Glow plugs and solenoids last longer when your batteries are good and voltage stays up where it belongs. 3 Changing the oil regularly and often. On these engines particularly, they use engine oil as hydraulic fluid to actuator the injectors. Lack of maintenance in the oil department causes these injectors to not actuate properly, ESPECIALLY in the cold. If you have the other two and it still won't start, it's probably time for injectors and more rigorous oil change schedule. Bonus! Like he said, oil viscosity. 15w40 has almost no place in cold climates even in the summer. The old adage of "it's a diesel, it takes thick oil" is such a myth.

Love the truck, great video. The only thing I have to add is that I noticed the rear screen down below flickering while you were starting the truck. You need to swap its main power to the auxiliary power off of the ignition. Very important. It keeps electronics safe from the power fluctuations that occur during startup.

He's right, im a marine guy not car guy but on vessels with glass cockpits and charging relays between battery banks we install a start interrupt wire to prevent starters from drawing power awag from electronic. Electronics are highly sensitive to voltage loss and can be damaged by these power fluctuations.

I drive a 2004GMC Sierra 3/4 ton HD that I bought new. I’ve used a synthetic oil since it’s 1st oil change and she starts just as well when it gets that cold here in northern Michigan. I’ve had a Predator programer for it since day one. I drive it 200 miles in one direction at least twice a month so 800 total miles. Average highway driving at around 76mph it gets around 27.1 mpg. It’s best mpg was 29.6. I’m planning on leasing a truck this fall and spending the next 2 years doing a complete down to the frame restoration. Plan on it being the last truck I ever own!!!!!

People under estimate the value of the 7.3 idi. I started mine regularly in -15-20 and it was pretty good about it. My 95 power stroke is just as reliable. Good batteries, nipendenso starter, working glow plugs - 5w-40 syn oil, fresh fuel filter in the fall and some anti gel when the temperature drops to 0 and below. Closest thing to a break down was with the idi @ 15 below. Set out on a before dawn 200 mile trip and a fuel filter gelled up on me 40 miles into the trip. Turned around and held it to the floor at a max speed of 35. Pulled into the drive at the house stopped in front of the shop roll up door and she stalled. My fault all the way. I forget to put a spare filter behind the seat. Great truck and even better engine. I wish I still had it

had a 1989 work van with the 7.3 .... i ran used (cleaned filtered) motor oil and vegetable oil (again cleaned filtered). didnt hesitate once. since i had two fuel tanks, i would run the last 15 min of driving on Diesel. and start up with diesel then switch over to the motor oil and vegetable oil mix and drive around all day on that stuff. saved tons of $$ ended up selling that van, wish i had not.

My old 97’ f250 had no problem starting in -14. It was the transmission that gave me all kinds of problems.

Oof I used to be a mine shifter and starting up diesels at 4-5am was a hoot every morning. Was grateful when we rehabbed that portal to put em under cover. Always chose gas for snowy states never really had the same issue with starting up.

Howes anti gel, plug controller, cold solenoid. I use to do this with a idi. Reduced starter and electric pump also helped
