Maybe not the norm. I would like to plant food for the deer that stay around our house. We are on just an acre, in city limits, next to a highway. There are right under 20 deer that stay close to our house. We have new neighbors that are clearing about 7 acres of land. Like to plant food for them away from our garden. We have it closed off to the deer, but i see them eyeing it. Lol. Nit sure if during the summer it is normal for them to be very thin. I dont know much at all about deer, but would like to have an area on our property for them to eat. 🤷‍♀️

I made the mistake of planting my rye too early one year and it was a disaster. Once it jointed, deer wouldn't touch it. One thing I've learned is to plant enough rye close to the brassicas so the deer will hit the rye early and let the brassicas grow awhile. Planting brassicas in a plot isolated from other food has always resulted in the deer hammering them early and they're done before November.

Good morning Norm, always great to hear from you and I really appreciate you steering folks my way! That is a challenge to shoot sitting down...but make sure you also practice with a backrest, as if you were actually sitting in a tree. Most of the time your side or back will be against the tree, creating a 3 point anchor between your two feet on the stand/ground and the tree or a seat with a backrest. Seems to help a lot!

Yep, in the sand soil I have here in central MN the Buckwheat really drowns out the weeds & I find it is easier to knock down to the ground than rye as a cover crop. The goal is to plant in mid-August with a seed mixture to create a tonnage situation. By having the Buckwheat cover my seed when it is past the point of maturity it really benefits the soil for the future with a nice armor. That's important when u get those warmer temps in September. U need that moisture to stay in the soil when that fall seed is full of energy. Buckwheat has worked great in multiple years where I used to have weed infiltration @ a high level 👏. I have had hybrid kale @ a waist high height & the leaves r just huge. It's nice to see it with the other plants in there that have a little different color to it.😄

can you plant turnips in pasture field without burning it off or glyphosating it? Second, can you mix with turnips with clover on a killed off plot
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 күн бұрын
You never want to just plant turnips...typically they shouldn't be anymore than 25% of a plot. Mixing clover and turnips is ok...but never more than 1# of turnips per acre with clover. The turnips block areas of clover next year and fill with weeds later in the year. Also, you should never plant into an unkilled field ...or untilled field.

Jeff this was a very helpful video - thank you. QUESTION (and apologies if too vague to answer) - what do you determine 'rainfall in the forecast when considering putting seed into buckwheat and/or on top of thatch? Is it something like 1/4-1/2" of rain say over a 1 week time, or more than that? I live in central MN so I am experiencing much of the same weather (rain) patterns as your. Ultimately debating 'when' to broadcast my seeds... thanks
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Hi Tyler...I like seeing rain in the forecast for a few days, at least 45-50% for 2-3 days. For example this Sat is 51% by us, followed by a few days of 25-30%. That alone isn't a lot, but I would watch the weather and radar like a hawk and if I see rain on the radar I would be ready and plant. We just had a couple of days of solid rain after a little last Sat morning. 1.5"+ in total. I did plant some...but I am smashing brassica seed in today, into the buckwheat on really damp soil today. Then crushing it, spraying Gly and Plot Start.

Seeding heavy peas into it in early September (150#s+ per acre), and then cultipacking would work for you. Would add a candy crop to the mix and then you will get seed head rye germinating throughout the Fall. Could even add 5#s of tillage radish to the mix with peas for even more variety.

You can mix...but make sure that spot will not be brassica the next year. Radish is a brassica so you can't plant them more than two years in a row in the same spot. For a mix rate, I personaly use and recommend about 5#s per acre. I recommend a full brassica mix including radish on one 1/2 of the plot and the green blend on the other.

Jeff, I’ve really gone head first into your no till buckwheat and then brassica planting. I thought you mentioned to add 50# Winter Rye/acre around Labor Day. Does that still hold true and the warning in this video is just about not mixing during the brassica planting?

Hi Jeremy! I usually go right around 200#s per acre of rye around Labor Day.

And that’s broadcast into the brassica growth? In my case, it’s winfred forage. Just want to be sure.

So can you brassica then layer rye Labor Day. Or are you just saying don’t plant at the rye and brassica at the same time

Hey Jeff, do you ever run winter rye along side clover/chic mix? You mention how small plot brassica would be eaten down quick. So curious if I should go with winter rye as it would only be about a 3rd of an acre addition to my plot.

Hi Klutch...I used too? But went to brassica vs clover for more volume during the hunting season.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks for the reply! I am new to the food plot game so I started simple(I hope) with a clover/chicory mix. Maybe next year I'll look to up my game and swap over to a brassica plot with a winter rye addition to build more attraction.

Hi Dom!! I would wait as late as 8/10 to 8/15 in your area, and then plant. Still plenty of time 👍

I’m in White Cloud also. Rain has been an issue all year. Too little. I”m planting my annual clover/brassica next weekend and hoping for rain. Brassica comes up real fast if it gets rain.

Would you recommend spraying plot start after crushing buckwheat & spraying roundup on the same day? When would you recommend spraying plot boost on brassica?
