This song always sends me back to spring of 1985, it reminds me of a school bus ride back home to San Antonio - from a late-night track meet in Utopia, TX. I was in fifth grade and it must have been about 10 p.m., someone had a boombox playing this song when I kissed a girl for the first time. I remember thinking, ‘I’d make a deal with God’ if I could get that kiss, she closed her eyes and I did too, ...I got the kiss! 😊 She smelled like bubble gum and her face was glowing off-and-on from the passing street lights, we laughed afterward. This song has a way of transporting me back to those moments on that bus on that chilly night…Such great memories…so long ago. I turn 50 later this year, I have a family, career, and a ton of other wonderful experiences, but I’m glad I can re-live these moments every now and then… such a great song.

Haven't seen anyone talking about it so I'll explain how I think this song is significant to the plot. ***Spoilers**** "Do you wanna know that it doesn't hurt me?", Max at the beginning of the season is hiding her hurt from everybody. Billy sacrifices himself for Max and Eleven to save them and from that sacrifice, a new love for Billy was birthed in Max where there was none before. She feels guilty for having wished for his death, when he ended up selflessly giving himself for them, "Is there so much hate for the ones we love?". So she wishes she would die instead and swap places with Billy. She wants to pay him back but can't because the moment is passed and he's gone. So the best way to honor his memory is to do what he did. This is why she accepts the task of being bait for Vecna. She runs "up the road" and "up the building" to the top floor of Vecna's house ready to do what is necessary for her friends. "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God", could imply that an alternative is being sought. Rather than seeking a deal with God, she's seeking a deal with the devil. The devil (Vecna) gives her death and she gets relief from her guilt. Thankfully, Max realizes this isn't what's best for her, or anyone else. The song raises the question, "Why doesn't God allow people to swap places?" And the answer is because, he gave you the circumstances that you are in because you are perfect for them. There is no one else better suited for your life than you. In the case of Max, if she had been killed instead of Billy, she wouldn't have been there to help everyone understand what was going on with the murders. She was the only one of the group that was constantly listening to music. She was the only one who could've been saved from Vecna. When Nancy is entranced by Vecna nobody knows what song to play to save her. Max is also the one who sees Eddie with Chrissy before she dies, giving the party their first clue. She was the only one of the victims that was able to overcome her guilt and inner demons. She is pivotal to the group's success and no one else could have filled that role.

I always enjoy younger generations discovering music that I've been listening to since I was a kid, but it's all brand new to them. This song is incredible! I listen to it over and over 😁. It plays in my mind when my headphones aren't on. It's really inspirational. Not going to lie this year has been one of the hardest in my life. Because of what's happened i yearn for it only to end sooner. But because of who I lost I don't wanna let go. man, the feeling.....almost enough to bring you to tears. Trapped in time, can never go back to a time before the internet, when you had to call your friends on a landline and arrange meeting times...... I wonder if gen-Z will feel a similar feeling given the world is much less of a mystery these days, and the walls of communication and "my friend moved to another town and I never saw her again" dont really exist any more. Either way, nostalgia is the sweetest and saddest trip. There is no reverse people, just enjoy the ride and brace for impact.
