1" sensor cameras are the first real level of cinematic video and photography with high bokeh blurry backgrounds, great color 4K resolution but still compact pocket sized cameras that can literally fit in your pocket. Today we compare all kinds of cameras with 1" sensors from camcorders to bridge cameras and compact pocket cameras and superzoom cameras for a cinematic look. These are all great vlogging cameras too and of course good for bird photography and wildlife videos.
Cameras featured in this video:
Bridge cameras:
4:10 Sony RX10iv amzn.to/49DOTUH
2:43 Panasonic Lumix FZ2500 amzn.to/3T6kk4v
Camcorders:
6:56 Panasonic AG-UX90 amzn.to/42QYyF9
8:56 Canon Vixia G60 amzn.to/3UQVNlh
10:40 Sony AX100 amzn.to/3I5thEY
10:40 Sony AX700 amzn.to/3I86mZK
10:40 Sony Z90V amzn.to/49Cgh5i
Compact Pocket Cameras:
13:35 Canon G5Xii
14:48 Lumix LX10 amzn.to/3SL7Vlg
11:58 Lumix ZS200D amzn.to/3SPjtUq
15:55 Sony RX100vii amzn.to/3ORaaSG
19:07 DJI Osmo Pocket 3
17:32 Samsung NX Mini

This entire video was filmed with 1" sensor cameras. The main shot of me at the table is with a Sony RX100vii pocket camera (and its only in 1080!) and the close ups are with a Sony AX700 camcorder from 12 feet away. Even though the RX100 can shoot 4K, I don't need to, the quality is good enough in 1080 for KZfaq and the file sizes are smaller.

RX100 is a power house camera; even MK 1 and can produce very good Stills / HD Content ( 4K cam in MK 4), need to get one in future ( Possible Bridge Cam as well ); Pany's equiv look good also - my current one not in good state. Must Say for occasionally Hybrid shooters ( with aim to use / do more Hybrid going forward- The Pany FZ1000 - FZ2000 - Bridge Range, etc is a good platform to start from.

I just got rid of mine too, I'd bought as a daily throw in the bag instead of lugging a DSLR around but I hated it, I gave it so many chances but in the end I boxed it up and sold it, far to fiddly/gimmicky and a right faff in manual mode constantly missing the shot I wanted.. I got myself an used Sony a6000 as a daily and it's awesome in comparison.

@@ianhallett6174 I played around with different modes and settled on one that works best. It's aperture priority, I set it to 1.4, auto intelligent iso, max set to 1600, metering set to center small spot, this one is lot of fun, you learn how cameras reads light. Focus mode is set to fixed or face tracking. I got sick of Sony, this camera inspires me more, given how small it is. After years of shooting pictures I realized it's all about how you edit. Raw files out of this camera are huge, which tells me that it saves a lot of info, hence very flexible in post. Quality wise this camera compares to my 5d mk4

Markus, you are a genius since you make the most complicated things easy for even me to understand. l love the examples you did with the Lumix 2500. The zoom and the price is perfect for me. The older I get, the more i tend to go cheaper and compact. No one ever says anything good or bad about my quality. I recently purchased the OSMO 3 and everyone seemed to love the footage, or at least they did not complain. I used it for concerts, protests and events already. Its getting to the point where I have been getting more complaints about my blurry background videos I get with my bigger cameras. A lot of people seemed to be trending to towards everything in focus so nothing is missed in the background either. Keep up the amazing work. This was so comprehensive and I appreciate you work so much...

I bought the NX 1 with both Prime Zooms, even knowing that Samsung will stop producing it. It was too good, the Imaga, the handling, and a fantastic menu, but it was h.265 at the time a codes hardly any nle could crack. If they would had offered the NX1 with an h.264 container it would have been the winner. I talked to acSony guy who told me, we didn‘t fear any competition other than Samsung. Tooo bad. Thanks Markus for your great comprehensive review. I own the RX 10 first generation. Its a goody, but to the day the colors of the NX1 are in my opinion unmatched to the day.

I agree that the RX100M7 is best overall. However, what makes the DJI Pocket (and Action 4) nice is how they can connect wirelessly to a mic without adding a transmitter. It’s always mentioned that audio is just as important as video, and DJI is ahead of the other manufacturers for building the transmitter into their devices to make them more portable. Just my opinion.
@SMGJohn

If you value audio, you get an external recorder and stop messing about with the camera audio, record audio in cameras to sync up with your main audio, use lav mic as much as possible if you talk with a big dead cat on it. If you use shotgun mics, get those that can record internally, God will thank you, but nothing beats a lav mic with a dead cat on it. Every big mic will capture a lot of background noise. Pro tip I have for you, if you do a lot of run and gun, get a stereo mic instead, screw the shotgun mic, but if you do a lot of talking heads, use a combo, shotgun/stereo mic + lav mic, then you mix the audio appropriately, you always want SOME background noise, but you want it controlled, if you are in rooms and such, record the room sound separately so you can use that audio to either mix as background noise, or use it as sample for noise reduction in your favourite editing tool! Audio is more important than getting good image!

Another great video! I bought a Sony Rx10 MK4 for a trip to Galapagos a couple of years ago and was blown away by the quality. I ended up taking more video than stills but both were amazing quality. His comment at 4:40 about Sony RX10iv 10 mins battery life is not fair and 'suspicious'. All of my last 2 years railways videos are shot with one battery (although I have 2 spares) lasting more than an hour. You can check this with my cab rides (train driver's view) vids where changing baterries while driving is unthikable. He has an excellent channel helping us taking the right decision when buing (expensive) stuff but this time he disapointed me.

Thanks for the great comparison video! I've shot on a Panasonic FZ-2500 for years and I love it! I have the AC battery adapter for it and I can shoot pretty much all day on AC power. On battery power I can usually get through an hour long shoot on one battery as long as I'm not constantly zooming in and out since this is a "fly-by-wire" zoom and runs the battery power down a little bit each time you move the lens. Love the colors and the focus is very sharp. IBIS is pretty decent but Panasonic auto focus is and has always been a little slow. Audio using an external mic is quite good. And Panasonic cameras aren't hobbled with the 30 minute shooting limit. They get around it by constantly running but breaking up the files into 29:59 minute segments that match up frame for frame on a timeline. Never had an issue with it for as long as I've owned the camera. Highly recommend it.

Really love your channel Markus, with everyone on KZfaq spouting all the latest and greatest cameras, you keep it real. I learned very quickly by using a webcam to shoot some of my early videos how important lighting is to get great shots, and it's like talking to a brick wall when people think they need the best cameras. While I do enjoy my Sony camera that has a 6k sensor downscaling to a final 4k image is super crispy, I find my friends get caught up in the hype and I always send them to your channel. I think the stand out reason is throughout my career, i've not had the experience you have in Hollywood. With your background as what I would consider a "real" pro in the movie industry rather than myself in the commercial space, you have worked in the Gold standard of filmmaking and have been through the transition of film to digital and you talk about older cameras and show us that you can get great images. I have to remind myself every camera release that i'm happy with my cameras, yes I would love each body to have all the features, but you know what I have a range of cameras and each has their own speciality. But I find the work arounds really hone your skills as camra operators, and when I show people videos shot with my iphone 6, they think i'm using my expensive cameras not an old phone that Apple probably no longer supports.

hehehehe, incredible review of this Marcus and his genius, so many cameras and so many options on the market and how difficult it is to decide when there is no Marcus out there to guide us XD oh and Cara as always, beautiful, spontaneous and tender, what a great duo you guys are!! A separate point was the cute owl you used for the tests, Marcus, my sister loved that owl XD

You’d assume that the term “1-inch sensor” is based on the size of the camera sensor and that it has a diameter of 1 inch. Logically, that’d make sense; however, it isn’t quite the case. In fact, a “1-inch sensor” measures in at 13.2mm x 8.8mm with a 15.86mm diagonal - far from the 1-inch (25.4mm) diagonal we’d expect. So, where does the term come from if not the actual size? It’s actually a reference to very early camera technology. In the 1930s, video cameras used glass vacuum tubes that transmitted electrons down the length of the tube to the photosensitive sensor. The outer diameter of these tubes grew in sizer from ½ inch to ⅔ inch and finally 1 inch, but the actual photosensitive sensor was always much smaller - usually around two-thirds of the diameter of the tube. However, since the tubes were technically part of the image-sensing technology, manufacturers could market them as 1-inch sensors. So why are phone camera sensors being referred to as 1-inch sensors? It essentially comes down to the size of the sensor, which is the same size as the sensor that would’ve connected to a 1-inch vacuum tube (a minimum of 9 x 12mm) in an early video camera.

Oh, you really are a thicko. 1 inch is 25.4mm but a 1 inch sensor is only 15.86mm diagonally. So it's pretty much half an inch. Why are you trying to defend the indefensible? Maybe whiny Markus could make a point of educating thick people like you so they're not fooled into thinking that 1 inch sensors are actually 1 inch in size. Now there's a shocking idea! @@donniebunkerboi9975

My 2nd last camera was the Sony RX100iii. Two years ago, needing more zoom, I "upgraded" to the Sony RX10iv which is my workhorse today. Excellent for videos as well as for stills. I am not at all surprised that Markus liked it so much. Apart from flash stuff for flashing soft from the side and an interval timer, the only extra stuff you ever need is a circular polarization filter, an ND filter and maybe a tripod now and again. Oh yes, plus a few spare batteries. 😁

He has an excellent channel helping us taking the right decision when buing (expensive) stuff but this time he disapointed me

@@sidirodromeas That was "felt" 10 mins. Photographing and doing videos it depends whether you use the EVF or not and in the case of video on the quality chosen. I usually manage to drain my battery investigating the menu system. Doing normal work is not much of an issue.

Hi Markus, Greetings from Germany and thanks for sharing your insights. That ist very insightful and helps to make a decision on ones personal needs. Quick question for you. Would you know of a camera or cam body for left handed or handicapped people? My son is limited in using his right hand and is desperately looking for such an option. At least a cam shutter release button key on the left side.

Sony makes a shooting grip with a shutter/record button on it. The RX100vii can attach to it. VCT-SGR1 is the model number. It's wired but also there is a blue tooth version. Both screw into the tripod hole.

@@MarkusPix Thanks for helping out in my question. Latest statistics say that around 10% up to 15% of the population are left handed. Sure, not everyone will opt for such a camera. But if there would be one on the market this will certainly be THE option in the community. And may be sometimes a manufacturer will come up with a modular body system with a central part in the middle and to attach the handle to the left or right side of it.

I bought my wife the Sony RX10 IV in 2019. We took it the the Firefight concert in Sydney. I could zoom all the way in to the make of the keyboard on stage from all the way at the other end of the stadium. No digital zoom. While everyone else was pointing their phones at the big screens.

Back in my early video days I shot with Sony Prosumer Handy Cams. The sensor was slightly bigger then the standard lower end consumer models. The sensor was smaller than 1 inch and these cams were still small and fit in your hand like any other mini DV camcorder. I had a HDR HC-90 that was only SD. Then I bought a Siny HDR HC-7 That was HD. My footage looked really great for the time and agree sensor size is not always a factor to consider. My go to camera is my Canon R7. I have an older 5D mark III. But don't use it anymore. My oldest wants to get into ASTRO photography. So I gave it to him. We've just lacked the time for me to teach him all it's functions.

Thank you Markus! This is just the video I needed. I’ll be at a concert in the second row this summer, and I was looking for a compact zoom camera to use for photos and some short video clips. I’ll also need a new iPhone soon, and I was trying to compare the 3x zoom of the 15 Pro to see how it might compare to something like the RX100 Vii or the Lumix options in this video. I almost considered the 15 Pro Max with its 5x zoom, but still don’t think it can compare to one of these. The timing of this video was perfect! 🙂

The only complaint about Sony RX-100 (I have got M6) is that I would really love to have a physical dial for adjusting exposure. Everything else about it just perfect, given the small pocket size. I bought and added a grip to it so it is easier to hold in hand without slipping. Since the camera has rather long minimum focus distance, it is bad for macro photography. But it is possible to add a magnetic ring and attach a magnifying lens and then it becomes very good at macro. As a bonus it does not suffer from lens flare effect like most of the competitors. Only in some cases it makes a small color spot which is easy to fix in post. Sony RX-100 is just almost a perfect camera.
