Great questions, I don't have an official answer but yes, I am sure there is a reason. I do know they fit better in the hand and there are patterns that the needle could even be longer.

The crochet hook came from Handy Hands but any small steel hook will do. The pink scribes came from Dollar Tree and those are just easier to handle than a pin to pull out stitches when I make a mistake. Before I found them i was using a corsage pin,

No I don't teach that/ There are groups on Facebook that might help. The only difference is needle has the hook and they do incorporate crochet in the pieces. I have done it in the past but found I perfer the needle tatting.

Pam was new at the time this video was created. Please be kind with new people first few times in front of a camera is not an easy thing to do. Now let me explain the holes in the picot gauges by Handy Hands. First off they are not called hole gauges. They are picot gauges. Second they will tell you which size needle you have and that needle will only work for certain sized threads. You have to use Tatting Needles when you tat because the eye of the needle is the same size as the needle therefore as you pull your stitches off the needle the core doesn't get stretched out and your tatting doesn't loose it's tightness it needs to hold the shape of the tatting you are working on. So in summation to your statement yes the thread must pass through the core tunnel easily however using the wrong sized thread with the wrong sized needle can stretch the tunnel out and make your tatting look unfinished and loose.
