Rimworld has a very very very steep learning curve right from the start of the game. This is not a game that holds your hand and you have to go online to get the info you need to play this game efficiently. Well I did anyway. In this Let's play I'm going to try covering all the mechanics of the early game while playing in a very silly fashion. The first thing I realized about rimworld is that it encourages you to play the game your way, which is exactly what I intend on doing.
Briefly we cover pawn selection. Early starting rooms, cooking and cleanliness, job priorities, animal zone, storage zones, hunting, taming, butchering and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Like I said this game does not hold you hand and in the fist 30 minutes of the game you are expected to know a lot.

I love this damn game, it's another one that I'm not allowed to play though, or else I'll lose all my time. Stoked to watch a play through! Best story I have from this game: I had a pyromaniac named Simmons. He was a serious problem, but he was so damn useful that I couldn't really justify getting rid of him. Basically whenever he went on a rampage I just had my warden go beat the shit out of him until he fell down. It was annoying as all hell, I had a couple times where he nearly burned down the entire harvest or the prison (letting any prisoners escape). I had to replace a couple bedrooms in his time as well. My warden (Brian) started at like 2 melee and by the time Simmons left us he had a melee skill of roughly 14 just from keeping Simmons from burning the base down. Fast forward a few game years, and I had a psychic ship land inside my base. I had all of my colonists gather outside, and began attacking it. 2 centipedes and like ~4 Scythers (pre 1.0, before they were split into Scythers and Lancers) pour out. The battle was really bad, most of my colonists sustained horrible wounds. After cleaning up I was able to get them all to sick beds except for Simmons. One of the centipedes had a flame thrower launcher thing, and hit Simmons dead on. By the time I killed all the mechanoids the fire had spread too far for us to reach him, and he burned to death. We didn't even have a corpse to bury. He died as he lived, on fire.

If you want to keep animals out of specific areas, you're mostly on the right track with creating a zone, but another way is to take a blank zone and press the 'invert' button, which adds the entire map, and then REMOVE just the areas you don't want animals to go into, but allows them to go everywhere else in the map.
@kevinjohn7056
@kevinjohn7056 4 жыл бұрын
This is especially useful if you train your animals to haul (which you should!). It can let the animals access the entire map but keep them out of places they shouldn't be (kitchen, research area, hospital, etc).

In the details of a task, the "Pause when satisfied" limit is to set production again when it hits said limit. For example, your cook is going to run back to the kitchen as soon as someone takes a meal. Set it to something lower to have your cook back in the kitchen only when you have X amount. And good luck with *RANDY* ;)

Happy to see you playing Rimworld, it's just about my favorite game of all time. e: faction color on the map doesn't mean anything at all except Pirate factions (red skull) are always hostile, every other faction is fair game; nearer towns will gradually become more hostile to you, but you can even manage that by rescuing their members if they get downed on your map, or giving them gifts of money etc

A couple comments: 1. You need to set medicine to be allowed in your internal stockpile, you have herbal medicine outside deteriorating. 2. The chance for a hunted animal to fight back increases the closer the hunter is to the hunter, didn't know if you knew that. 3. Might want to start planting crops soon... 4. Researching too, although you probably already plan to do that next vid. 5. Great bows, which you can research, are probably the best ranged weapons you'll have access to for quite a while, apparently, looking online, very effective compared to some of the lower tier firearms.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
I forgot the medicine. Distance from animals I'm aware off but for hunting they go to max range. Have no intention of planting crops, I'm nomadic. No intention of researching any time soon if I can get away with it, depends on what the local shops have. Would love the great bows but would prefer to buy some bolt actions or assaults.

Great to see you playing Rimworld Francis! You're doing a great job explaining the basic mechanics. I didn't see anyone mention this but to make sure you're aware, tribal start also decreases overall research speed for the whole playthrough. I've never done a nomadic playthrough so I'm very interested in how your style looks. Keep up the great work!
@FrancisJohnYT

Lets hope my play style works, don't have enough practice to know if it will. Tribal comes with tree effects that I am aware of, decreased research of 150%-200% depending on tech, 170% forage rate for caravans and reduced difficulty in recruiting tribal faction members.

I was genuinely excited at your announcement that you were going to upload some Rimworld. It's such an excellent game, easily top 10 best games ever created, and I look forward to seeing how you work out all the nuts and bolts. I've posted 70+ episodes and counting of merciless randy and the "FUN" never stops, the nomadic style is extra awesome, it prevents late game stagnation. One of the mechanics that you might not know about yet is that your guys track dirt onto your floors and buildings from outside, so that's why your kitchen is going to be permanently dirty in its current incarnation. Better to place your kitchen where no-one but your cook is going to walk in and dirty up the place. To reduce dirt-tracking it also helps to make some floor tiles outside your doors, like making an entry porch for your colonists to wipe their feet before going in. Looking forward to all the terrible things that will happen!

It is very addictive, because there are so many ways to play it. I am currently doing a one pawn, naked, tribal playthrough. The first meal was a handful of berries from the edge of a tundra map, the second a bunny melee killed with a log. Unfortunately, no Megasloth dinner for my pawn. Btw you may want to use the heavy fur of the Megasloth for apparel as it's qualities (insulation /protection) are excellent and kind of wasted in a bedroll.

Final thing, you should get some plants growing asap. Get some rice growing as it grows quickest (use it to make pemmican), have some corn as well as it produces a ton but takes longer. Also should consider healroot (not as important since it grows wild), cotton (can make clothing with it to both replace tattered clothes and for selling), and smokeweed (for moral boost and for selling).

Get ready for extreme couch gaming xD Edit: I am impressed you didn't call pawns "dupes" jaja Edit2: If you don't have a good cook, your pawns will be getting food poisoning quite often. You can check the food poisoning chance on the info of each pawn. Edit3: I remember Tynan removed the bump in butchering efficiency with skill. That means, no matter the skill of the pawn, the results from butcher will be the same. If you want to free your cook from butchering, you can install a mod to separate those jobs, or you can do it the easy way and make a bill restricted by skill level of cooking.
@FrancisJohnYT
@FrancisJohnYT 4 жыл бұрын
Wait so Butchering can be done by anyone with no penalty now? Thanks for the info. Hummmm still not sure I want to change the system just yet. @@FrancisJohnYT You could actually leave the floor but only if you intend to floor up your dining room area. The reason being is that when pawns go from dirt to floor they will drag in dirt onto the floor which needs to be cleaned. So having a floored base with a dirt bedroom would introduce more dirt. This is also the reason you don't really want the kitchen to be right next to an exterior door but that was already mentioned by someone in the comments. OTOH if you intend to keep dirt floors in your dining area then it would actually save cleaning to not have wood floors in your bedrooms. But as you said, temp base, so doesn't really matter, but it could be useful for the next one!
