I’ve watched so many videos explaining Music Theory. So I have some idea how it works but never fully understood it. But you explained it differently and I finally started to see patterns on the fretboard. Thank you so much. You are great 👍

Of all the 'learn the fretboard' videos I've watched on YT, this is by far the best. I can remember 3 shapes (I already knew 2 and 2). I can now practice this for a week or so, and I will know the fretboard. This should be a fundamental lesson for all new players. Many thanks!

Learned more from you in fifteen minutes than in the literal years I spent trying to understand it as a kid. Looking forward to the next one!

If I play the A starting on 5th and end up on a different "A" using this awesome method...how do I identify the scale to solo at any given octave? I'm sure there's a pattern based on what string I start or end upon. This one question would make such a difference it's hard to articulate 😂 Again, thank you for everything you do. You have really been a huge well of actual understanding for me and a lit of other folks.
@marshwetland3808
@marshwetland3808 Жыл бұрын
I think there's many scales, depending on what you are doing. But this is a good backbone on which to lay other patterns you're using, diatonic scales, minor scales, pentatonic scales. Knowing even just the octaves helps me navigate and work out things in relation to them. With the octaves I know where the 7ths, b3rds and 5ths are, and from those I know everything else. Just keep building and linking, I figure. Sometimes I work out a melody in my head and I can go to the guitar and find it correctly on the first try. Eventually, I hope I"ll be able to do that without thinking so hard about it - lol. But working through the details, like these octave and triad patterns is how I'm gonna get there. Which reminds me - this is a diagram for arpeggios, isn't it? Could just drop out the 5th, sub in the b7th, and you've got a bunch of dominant 7th triads to play around with.

I started to play the "diatonic scale" as I call it in 1988 or so. I don't think I heard of CAGED until 2002 or something. When I realised I could use five of the modes to play the major scale over the entire neck it felt great. I think it might have been the Fastfingers mail order courses with cassettes that solidified the box shapes I still use today. I haven't really done much "soloing" for nearly thirty years, but have strayed beyond those same boxes over the years. Maybe I'll end up giving CAGED another go. I think I've already attempted to stick letter to the modes, but I've kind of got stuck in my ways about my boxes though.

Thx for this video. I am still having trouble understanding. It comes from the term "shape". When it says "C-shape" I am looking for something that looks like a "C". When it says "G-shape" I am looking for something that looks like a "G". Why is it "C-called" shape then when it doesn't look like a "C"?

34 years of teaching guitar professionally in schools, further education and privately means I’ve seen pretty much every approach to learning guitar. I also have to play up to the KZfaq algorithm with how i present my content. It’s worth it to get critical concepts out in the wild to guitar players who need the information. It’s no good making an awesome video for 10 people…so I play the game!

Hi. Does that work for ukulele as well? Or is there a similar pattern? On a bartitone ukulele, i have a DGBE tuning...
@rickysguitar
@rickysguitar Жыл бұрын
Kind of. The uke only has 4 strings so the D shaped octave will help you find notes from your D string but because CAGED uses 6 and 5 string chords you end up not having enough strings to visualise. I wouldn't rule it out. But you've given me something to think about Johannes!

@danielo2427 Жыл бұрын
@@ShejtanInsan oh funny, I’ve always thought of CAGED in a slightly different way. I’ve always thought about the shapes of the open chords and where the roots (and octaves) are located. It works for all 5 chords. For example: C shape, the roots are on the A and B string, and you can play it anywhere in the fretboard and the roots are still going to be in the same relative position to each other. Same goes for D: roots are on the D and B strings, etc.
