Ibanez premium sounded the best for me, it has really nice saturation and feels like a wall of guitar sound compared to the others with a bit more note definition but not enough impact.

The big advantage of the Blackout pickups are they overall EVEN gain structure. I don't know how to describe it but the sound is "even" all around the song. Also they have TREMENDOUS amount of output - I had to back the DI Gain on my interface a lot to prevent signal clipping. I'm a huge fan of those - even more after doing that demo

Thanks! TB5's in LTD makes a really wide sound - In Sterling - the Scourge pickup is less gainny and pushed me to pick harder as you might notice on the video. My friend told me that I was visibly making much more effort playing with Sterling and that is 100% true - least forgiving axe on this list. The tremolo bridge is terribly uncomfortable :D

honestly I just think my approach to make riffs, licks and progressions I different when I use different guitars, because I might play more melodic when I use my Ibanez Jem (because it reminds me of Steve Via) and I play more heavy on my Jackson Kelly (because I've used it mostly to write death metal with my friends). My conclusion is, I think different guitars assign different approachs to the guitar, because of what jobs we connect them to in our brain.

This is the reason why I hoard so much same sounding instruments. There is also one thing that I should mention and you pointed out - inspiration. All the guitars I gathered (because those are only 6 of them) are there because at some point I felt like this is the one which will keep me working with passion. Thanks for your comment !

Mike Kerr said the reason he chose such a cheap instrument (Gretsch junior jet ii) was because if you're gonna put a bunch of pedals that fuck up the sound between your guitar and amp then what difference does it make. This illustrates that very well.
@Cultifact

Exactly!
@oskarwroniewicz

So, I went into this comparison assuming there won't be meaningful differences. Listening on my studio monitors... well, it's pretty much what I expected. The two that stood out were the Ibanez Premium with Blackouts (it has more saturated low end and sounds more compressed/even - exactly how you discribe it being "easiest to play") and the very surprising one was the Prestige with Custom Hathors - it has VERY interesting mid range, almost chainsaw-like in some parts. Very unique tone and I can honestly believe that you would have a hard time dialing in such a unique tone with the other guitars. Incredible job with the comparison - that's exactly how it should be made. Now I'm waiting for IR comparison, to show some folks what really makes the difference lmao
@oskarwroniewicz
@oskarwroniewicz 9 ай бұрын
Actually, you could get that Hathor tone with other guitars - just use EQ before the amp and push the mid frequencies Hathor pickup emphasises. Just another reason to think twice before splashing out on pickups... which are basically magnets with some copper wound around them lmao
@Cultifact
@Cultifact 9 ай бұрын
Thank you Oskar ! Happy to hear people enjoying the video. Your conclusion is exactly the same as mine - I think that the Prestige got the most interesting and prone-to-change/susceptible kind of high-mid and high range which could be post edited with great results by professional producers to blend into the mix with different results. But ofc we are talking about the 1:1000 situation - everyone is talking about the recording sessions, studio sounds etc. where in fact enters the studio once in a lifetime...if at all.

For me it was the Ibanez GIO. It sounded the most crispiness. The squeals and the hammer ons were on que. In my opinion I think the Ibanez takes the cake.
@Cultifact
@Cultifact 9 ай бұрын
Gio surely should be an underdog with its 299€ price but it turned out that even on the stock setup it keep up with the much more expensive brothers. This is the reason I made a review/demo of this guitar some time ago. Getting a good, free of any quality issues model is great entry-level guitar for beginners, intermidiates and those who need a cheap gear for some kind of touring or backups.
@VVVY777
@VVVY777 8 ай бұрын
The GIO holds up. None of them are "better" than the others- they're all just different. It's all up to preference. I'm pretty sure you could tweak settings to get them to match. Overall, the answer to the question was always "the differences don't matter".
@Cultifact
@Cultifact 8 ай бұрын
Yep - the video has no interest in showing which one is superior over the other one. The GIO is actually great one if we consider it a budget solution - especially for beginner guitarists! Thanks for the comment.

Seymour Duncan Blackouts are highly underrated imho - I'm kinda surprised that Seymour is not really promoting that products range anymore. They were always in a shadow of EMG's, and now they are becomming forgotten as fluences and other pickups promoted by modern players are pushing them in some sort of oblivion.

The only one that really stood out for me was the Ibanez Prestige RG652. Whatever's going on with that guitar is giving it a lot of treble, especially in the palm mutes. If I had the choice of spending time and money to change pickups to get that sound, if it's even the pickups that are changing the sound and not like super low action compared to the guitars, or pulling up an EQ for free and changing the sound in an instant, I'd choose the EQ. 😅 For the most part they all sounded pretty much the same though. The more videos I see, the more tests I do myself, and the more I really think about it, the less I care about what pickups are in my guitars. I put a $30 Wilkinson humbucker in a Fender Strat build I did and it sounds like a guitar with a humbucker in it. 🤷
@Cultifact
@Cultifact 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment mate ! Yes - the Hathor pickups and Prestige body kinda emphesized the high-mid & high frequencies. There is a lot of "melody information" in those areas so for someone who would do the professional mixes this might make a bigger overall difference.
@areksrocks3375
@areksrocks3375 9 ай бұрын
Gio has some kind of less full sound, a little "clumsy". Prestige the biggest difference has on playing chords - it sounds the most connected and fully. But generally I hear small differences. Comparing all the guitars there are differences in some frequencies and the overall feeling of the sound, so it is up to the player which fits their best.
@Cultifact
@Cultifact 9 ай бұрын
In this test all the guitars are using exactly the same EQ setting but as you noticed - each of those, treated individually will make bigger difference - if we will cut the annoing frequencies out of the Prestige it would sound different than if the Gio or other would have been implemented with the missing frequencies which are present in the prestige - I hope you catch my drift here haha

1. Loved the piece you wrote. Super heavy and aggressive as hell 2. I was surprised at how much difference there was. I expected to have a hard time knowing when the guitar changed, but going from the Ibanez to the Solar was night and day. And that was through my garbage phone speakers! I'm sure the difference would be even more pronounced on headphones 3. The Ibanez Prestige sounded the best to me personally. The Solar was also very good but the more upper mid focus didn't work as well in this particular case. The Stirling sounded the worst by far - completely anemic compared to every other one. I sure hope it sounds better in other genres because I'd be pissed to spend that much for a sound like that
@Cultifact
@Cultifact 9 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm very happy to see people hearing the differences because in the middle of recording I was in doutbt if this comparison will make a sense at all as differences are very subtle and might not be so obvious for majority of people. Still... they are rather cosmetic in the mix :)

I dunno man, for this kind of metal it's pretty much humbuckers all the way. Also the point of this video is to show that humbuckers sound like humbuckers and there is no need to pay $400 for a Bare Knuckle set - the tone difference is just not worth it. Also $2000 guitar won't necesarily sound better then $300 Ibanez Gio. You wouldn't get that conclusion testing different pickup types

yeah, no doubt about it! Price tags are a bad way to choose a guitar, for sure. I discovered pretty early on that changing the pickups will make almost any guitar sound good, if you know which ones to choose for your style of playing. the only other factor is how comfortable it is to play, how stable is the tuning and stuff like that. I'm not a wealthy guy by any means, so I've just invested in BKP pickups a bunch of times, put them in my reasonably priced korean schecter\ibanez guitars, bought a DI box, and my DI was as good as any other, so I've just focused on the playing instead. No probs! I already told that someone in other comment - GIO is borrowed from Ibanez as I got it at Guitar Summit 23 from guys at Ibanez - borrowed for the tests and needs to be returned this week. Few other guitars are for sale as I came to the point of guitar hoarding - as much as it's fun to keep it has no financial explanation and I need to back up some money. Also all of them (except the Prestige) are bought second hand. This is also one of the reasons I decided to do this video as this is probably the last time I can flex with so much of them and put them to the real test for the last time. RG652 is sticking with me and LTD MH-1000 as well as they are serving different purposes in terms of music composition. I'm thinking about leaving the 721 for the downtuninng but not sure yet. 721 is not so expensive second hand so maybe I'll keep it is as well.
