Love it, as a guitar player learning to piano I hate having my hand held and some dude explaining for 30 minutes 5 notes These videos are great I just memorize this pattern and jump on it Your improve is good to try and mimic in ways, I like the way you use the home note to correlate the change on the left hand pattern,, super smooth Big thumbs up from australia 👍

Growing up my dad used to play this style and he still does, but he no longer owns his piano. When he moves he is going to pick one up and play again, but I miss his music. I never learned to play the piano, but I am surprised how fast I am picking up the rhythm of this. I guess growing up and hearing it all the time has helped. Im going to surprise my dad next time I visit and gift him a keyboard and then play along with him as a gift. Thanks for this I hope when I have a son I will be able to play similarly to my dad because its so cozy to me.

As a 'singer' I always remember the blues scale as: 'Woke Up My Ba - By Left Me'. (Add a few outside notes and you can get 'Caravan' without too much rummaging.) It's like 'Oh Will You Wash My Father's Shirt?. Which I could never master on piano.

Brendan - You're a legend mate, your tutorials are exactly what I have been looking for as I am classically trained but have always marvelled at the blues and jazz techniques and wondered what was behind them. Most attempts to teach myself have failed so having trawled the net for guidance I always return to your lessons! Thanks for helping to broaden my musical scope albeit in the early stages following 25 + years of playing what I read! just need to devote more time now to your channel. Keep it up as people are listening! cheers mate Dave in Bournemouth Respect

Very happy to find this episode. Many woogie tutorials confuses viewers this scale as western C scale, especially those beginner tutorials that skip a few notes and retro fit it in C major. And it made me question why it sounds so different from Taylor Swift's music.

Epic playing man! I'm a very strong guitar player and have been playing for 15+ years and recently decided that learning piano would reallllly up my studio production capabilities. It's been relatively easy for me to transfer knowledge of scales, modes, chords, etc. to the piano however I'm running into a challenge with figuring out what is the most practical way to play a scale, run or melody with my right hand i.e. what fingers to use, when to cross over my thumb and move my hand, etc. I really like your style and your improvisation was super tasteful, do you happen to have a video that might help me get better with figuring out when and where to cross over and how to play with more fluidity? Thanks for reading!

Mr. Brendan if you can help me, I'm very confused about how to play boogie woogie because I play blues on the piano using the typical C blues scale, but playing boogie woogie it sounds me better using C7 /F7/G7 with the blues note. So, it sounds better playing E note instead of Eb note on the C chord. What is your opinion? Thank you!

Thanks for this. I believe that the easiest way to learn the minor blues scale and in fact any scale or chord in all 12 keys is to not only learn the notes and chord names. Study the INTERVALS as well. For example, you get a C major chord by stacking a minor triad on top of a major one. To get a C minor chord you stack a major triad on top of a minor one. You get the minor blues scale by starting on the root - say C. Add a minor third to Eb, then a whole tone to F. Go up a semitone to play the #4 or the tritone of C which is F#. Then go up a semitone to G then a minor 3rd to Bb. Then go a whole tone to bring you to C, the root but an octave higher. For beginners this may sound complex but believe me it works. All the best 🔒🔑.
@andrewwilliams9580
@andrewwilliams9580 3 жыл бұрын
Counting in semitones, I taught myself the same thing. Pick a starting note, +3, +2, +1, +1, +3, +2. To make it a bit easier, I used to tell myself 32, 11, 32.

I encourage piano players to learn the blues scale in Eb. Keith Richards says that blues guitarists used to detune to Eb to better accompany the piano player. Eb pentatonic is the most accessible key for improvising on piano, and many blues licks are intuitive and easy to play. You can play much more than chopsticks!

Take the E out of the major chord in your left hand. This would make the chord a Perfect 5th instead, which basically allows for more freedom and creativity in your right hand. A perfect 5th does not need to submit to keys of major or minor scale, thats why its perfect. (So play that C and G in your left hand... Dont play C, E, and G... The E is whats making it sound wrong.... Ik this is a late reply btw lol
@danny91pr
@danny91pr 2 жыл бұрын
@@timcronin5107 late or not I appreciate the reply. I never thought about it that way. I never really made that connection to why they call it a perfect fifth. Ever since I wrote that comment I actually been doing what you just described, but I never really knew why it sounded better.

Question. How do you fit this scale into western scales? I know we can fit Latin jazz into western scale because it is minor key in phrygian mode. But the blues scale has 6 notes, fewer than western 7 note scales, but more notes than western triad and 5-note chords. It doesn't look like either one. I know you have chord progression I-VI-I-V-IV-I on your left hand, but the right hand melody don't have a real scale to me. I am suspecting the scale collapses on to chords. I am very confused.
