We're Michael & Becci and we've just bought a schist stone house in Central Portugal which we're about to start renovating while retaining as much character as possible. In the first part, we'll take you on a tour around the house so you can see what a mammoth task we have ahead. It's going to be a LONG ride, so we hope you'll come along with us too!

The wooden box, were / are called "Salgadeira"!!! I also have one in my property. They were originally made and used to keep meat in good preserved conditions in salt. As the name says, salgadeira, means to salt things. There were no refrigerators back then and salt was the preserving material. Salt was so important in the middle ages that even the name salary comes from salt because, there was a time people were paid in amounts of salt. Later on people repurchased the "Salgadeiras" to store other goods.

@@PortugalonaPostcard if you aren't going to use them as a trunk, maybe repurpose them? Turn them upright, place some sort of legs under them and use as a cupboard, dresser,... the lid would become the door. I think that would be a nice upcycle :)

Bem-vindos! That room with a fire near a tank is to put an alambique and make aguardente! The tank with cold water was essencial for the destilação purposes! The big wood boxes were to preserve the pork in salt! It’s seams it’s was really a self sufficient little farm. Great project you have ahead.

The room with the corrugated metal area and the animal pen was lilely where the family kept a goat prior to slaughtering it themselves in the metal area, the two wires would have gone around a leg each on the animal. Not the most pleasant area but grea tour, love to see what you do with the place!

What an awesome place and spot. You’ll have many years of fun and adventure working on it. And well done on your first video. The big wooden storage chests would be great in the lean to, to hold outdoor cushions etc and can also be used like a bench for food prep and cooking in the same area - two uses.

that room outside that you have no idea for what it was with a fire pit would be used usually has a smoker area, a variety of smoked sausages, hams, in Portuguese Chouriço, morcelas, farinheiras, presunto, alheiras if you have time and patience you will be able to learn it all and to enjoy it with some good red wines and cheese in a cozy afternoon receiving friends and living the life ... good luck in your endeavour and first off Welcome to this country ... adapt and mingle ;)

Can you draw a rough floor plan and show us what you have in mind? That back outside area, although seemingly crowded in, would be very pleasant to sit in during those extreme temperatures. Those downstairs rooms could be useful if you can have inside access from one to the other. It all depends on what you want of course. Best wishes from Australia.

Hello guys and welcome to my country. My advice is keep it as close to the original condition as possible, especially those gorgeous wooden windows on the top floor and the red clay roof tiles. Make the stone in the stone walls visible. If you could save the wooden ceilings that would be great, but if the wood is not in good condition anymore and can't be restored, then you have no other option but to remove it. And above all: Have fun!
@PortugalonaPostcard

Muito obrigada! 😊 We will definitely be keeping it as original as possible - we love it! I'm afraid the wooden ceilings are beyond repair but we want to keep all of the original beams in the loft. As much of the stone walls will be exposed as possible too. And we'll hopefully have plenty of fun along the way!

My ancestral home was near Cantanhede, my grandmothers house had two of these large wooden “Arks” as did many of the other houses in the Alesia. They were used to store grains and corn that would be taken to the local mill as need for milling into flour , some also had salt for preserving meats, never saw any used for animal feed but things may have changed. Have many fond memories of spending summers at my grandparents home, Portugal was a very displace in the 60’s and 70’s for me coming from the US it was like traveling back in time.

Good luck with your massive endeavour, folks. I have no diy skills whatsoever, and have feet for hands, so I would be less than useful in even fantasising about such a thing. I do believe though, that it isn't necessarily how the project will turn out, that drives one, but it's all in the vision that the two of you have in achieving that end, that is the driving force. You will learn things about each other that none of you expected, and it will draw the two of you even closer than you could ever imagine. Be safe, and don't rush it, is what I say to you, because the name of the game is for both of you to live to enjoy the finished article together, in one piece and concious. ( chuckle ) I wish you rainbows.

Welcome to Portugal guys, Love your first video. I notice that you keep saying "supporting wall needs to stay" before you do anything check with your local camera if they have any plans on file for your property? If they don't then you have free roam to do what you want within the shell. This is due to the fact that they can NOT prove what was there originally.

It was not unusual to have a fire with shelving over it for cooking & warming. You might investigate whether a good quality wood hardener would save you some time & money. After treating the wood worm, wood can be significantly strengthened by wood hardener. When wisteria is out of control, it can take down a building. It is invasive, and it's roots & vines can break down walls & foundations. While your leftover furniture may not appeal to you, each of those pieces tell a story in how they were created, where they were placed, and how they survived. You will find wood planks that are too costly to produce today, even types of wood that may no longer be found. Metals that were finely milled in ways we've stopped using because we can make cheaper pieces that last a few years instead of a hundred+ years. If you don't want it, I hope you can find someone who will take them. Once they are gone, we won't make them again. Even pieces that look beat up, can be restored...just takes some effort. You can also use pieces in new ways. You don't have to use a grain bin for storing grain.
