This is my official review after having the truck for 1 year.
How much does it cost?
Is electricity cheaper than gas?
How much does it cost to charge?
Cost of ownership?
What is your first reaction to the Ford Lightning?
How long will a Ford Lightning last?
Do you still love to drive it after 1 year?
How far can a 2023 Ford Lightning drive on a single charge?
Have you ever wondered how to improve the range or even if you can improve the range of your EV?
Can you take a road trip in a F150 Ford Lightning?
Is Bronco Sport better than the Ford Lightning?
Where did I buy my Lightning? Phil Long Ford
In this video we are celebrating my Ford lightning now that I have owned it for a full year.
The 2023 Ford F150 Lightning Lariat trim is such an awesome truck. You can even take a road trip with confidence. If you leave it in sport mode, the regenerative braking will help extend the range whether you are driving in town or on a highway.

I also have a 2023 Ford Lightning Lariat, it is antimatter blue, and I have put a little over 17,000 miles on the truck since July when I bought it. I absolutely love the truck, I traded in a Model Y , I really liked, but needed a truck for work. I am amazed at how well the truck drives, I think it drives a little better than the Model Y, I hated to give up the Tesla, but I haven’t lost a thing in comfort with the Lightning. I also had an issue with my tires wearing on the edge, the dealer said my truck was out of alignment, I had snow tires put on the truck for winter since I am in New Hampshire, The tires haven’t shown any wear at all at 7000 miles, my factory Hankook tires shows wear on the edge at 10,000 miles. I did not get the truck aligned as the dealer suggested since I saw no signs of misalignment while driving. I wasn’t aware of the improper tire pressure on the trucks. Thanks for informing us of that.

No bad turbos, no bad transmissions, no bad transfer cases, far easier check outs as simply put far less to check out very impressive first start for what is a first of its kind battery electric full size truck market for Ford, Rivian and now Tesla. Lots of improvements now no doubt en route so be interesting to see if at one point you decide to trade and upgrade how that experience plays out as now there really are choices big time. As far as towing i think for short hauls under 100 miles this a game changer.

Good points. I have 32,000 miles on it right now. The battery has a 100 K mile warranty so I’ve been kind of up in the air about when to trade it in or if I’m gonna try to see how long it last and do videos about that.
@dusty_burkhalter
@dusty_burkhalter Ай бұрын
But the big ? is the batteries. At a potential replacement cost of more than a motor and transmission that can easily last 300k miles with proper maintenance my guess is the savings in repairs is a moot point. Funny everybody talks about trading these off just prior to the battery warranty which shows a lack of confidence.

Good point. I’m new to EVs personally so yeah I’m not sure how long it will last, but it’s going strong so far and I’m gaining more confidence all the time. That’s one of the reasons to do the videos, not because I’m an expert. But instead just to show my experiences and hopefully help others with any apprehensions they are having.

got a lightning 2months ago, absolutely love it. ICE owners need to understand that. EV owners love these vehicles because they drive awesome and are super smooth, not because we are saving money on gas or they are 'environmentally friendly' or lack of maintenance, all that stuff is great but it that's not why the majority of EV buyers buy them, it's because they simply drive WAY better. The whole waiting to charge is such a stupid argument from ICE owner that don't know anything, 99.999% of your charging will be at home, you'll wake up with a 'full tank' every morning. yeah, if you take a trip you might have to spend a few extra min at a charging station...but that's what, 1-4 times per year ? it's not even an argument. Anyways, at the end of the day, too each their own, love the vehicle you have, whether it's EV or ICE, I love mine, and I know every Ford Lightning owners love theirs.

How is the insurance rates compared to any past ICE vehicles? I am considering one and tried to quote on Progressive and it doesn't even list the Lightning option. I hear they are much higher but I'd like to know if it really is. I know Teslas are because of the way they are built, but the Lightning has much more in common with the regular F150 body panel wise. Thanks in advance.

@@mikelemoine4267 Insurance is higher, it's 100% BS, all insurance companies are saying it's becuse F150 are high on the stolen vehicle list, but lightnings(and other EVs) are the lowest stolen vehicles on the market.
@mikelemoine4267
@mikelemoine4267 Ай бұрын
@@alanliard1829 Yes I'd guess EVs are hard to steal as they are so connected and trackable. No way to jump a solenoid on the starter like the old days🙂. Plus they are heavy and if I had to guess, would drag if towed because of the regen (assuming it'd still generate while off). That said, I don't doubt that they may be targeted later since the batteries are so valuable, but aside from Tesla they aren't mainstream enough to create a huge market. Yuppies probably don't go to shady garages or do DIY repairs with Craigslist parts like people who own older ICE beaters that are more easily fixed by novice mechanics. I think much of it is fear of fires. Even though they don't seem to burn at a significantly different rate than ICE cars, when they do burn they really burn and can cause more damage that the insurer may have to pay out. The other issue is that they currently seem to total them out if they so much as get a scratch on the battery shield. Rich Rebuilds just did a video on a Rivian that had extremely minor damage and none to the battery but they totaled it because a couple of mounting studs were slightly bent. So much for going green when you discard a car rather than repair it. In the end, I believe that insurance companies don't necessarily care about writing cars off or high repair costs as much as they claim. The reason is that prices are regulated to let them earn a certain margin over their costs. If that averages 5% (a number I've heard, but not verified), then they make more as they can apply to raise premiums by the increase plus their 5% or so. If costs remain flat, they can't grow their revenues. Just a theory, I'm sure there are nuances I don't know about like how long it might take to recoup the losses they took before they get their increase, etc.

Great review man. I have a 2021 Ford Maverick and it’s awesome. I graduate this semester and have a job lined up where their office has 8 free ChargePoint chargers to use for their employees (and there’s only 2 Teslas taking advantage of it). I’m really tempted to get a F150 Lightning as a graduation present and your videos have been a tremendous help. I still live at home with my parents, can install a charger at home, and help take over all their bills soon after I start working. I still want a truck and for my commute a F150 Lightning makes sense to me. My little sister turns 16 in September too so I can give her my Maverick.

Hi Mike - Great review! I also have a 2023 Lariat ER in Antimatter Blue (and I also do not have the camera washers 😢 ). I just crossed a year as well on 1/6/2024 with 31,000 miles - no regrets and the truck has been phenomenal. I wish I had tracked the “fuel” as closely as you did but I believe I’m in the same range as you, for October we racked up 3,300 miles - only charging from the home Ford Charger Station Pro at 5 cents a KWh and the cost was about $120 for the month. Build quality as you mentioned is great - no rattles, no “panel gap” issues - the truck is the smoothest, fastest and quietest vehicle I have ever owned. It rides like a luxury sedan, accelerates like a super car and tows and hauls like a truck. My daughter rides horses and when our barn hosts the 4H horse show - it’s all powered from the ProPower Onboard - no more running 300’ extension cords from the barn to the arena. I also have not towed yet with it but I have zero doubt it would handle the horse trailers for our local shows without issues - but long hauls may be less desirable - but doable - as several people on our NE Lightning Club can attest since they haul 36’ campers all over with them. I also did not initially have the heated steering wheel - they took it off the price when I purchased - but then when the parts were available they notified me and we scheduled the install when they replaced the rear light bar (my light bar was not showing any signs of a leak but they replaced anyway) and that cost me nothing. I brought it in for all three of the 10,000 mile services where they rotate tires and checked the brakes (which I rarely use), CV boots etc. I chose to pay $78 for a wheel balance and $250 for a 4 wheel alignment when I noticed a bit of wear on the outside edges so all in for maintenance for me was $328. Our first trip in the truck was from SE PA to West Palm Beach, FL - had no issues finding chargers - some sites had a dispenser with issues but never once was close to stranded or ever concerned and the 30-40 min break time was needed. Since then we’ve done trips to VA, NY, OH, MI - again - no issues on road trips. Negatives - From July to about September the on-board modem was having strange connectivity issues - I mentioned some of these on the Forums (which Ford Model E Engineering monitors) and they reached out to me and I was able to install some remote diag tokens for their team and within a month they figured out what the root cause was, deployed to my truck and advised they used my experience to correct code for other customers and prevent it from happening going forward. Other than that - the only other negative was the skid plates seem to collect a LOT of snow which is not a bad thing unless you park it in the garage like I do - lol. My next long haul with be to drive out to the Chicago Auto Show to meet our fellow club members from the MidWest Lightning Club and Ford at the show. Watching the weather closely but if it’s good I should be there!

Hi Kurt, Thanks for your comment. I thought I have driven a lot, but I’m finding out there many people such as yourself that blow me away on the miles driven contest. :-) It looks like we have twin trucks, but you seem to have a better cost of charging setup. (.05/kWh is less than half of my cost) That is awesome. I haven’t had any problems with the internet, but I’m glad you got it fixed. That is so awesome as well you are able to use it to power your barn for shows. It does not surprise me at all knowing everything that I’ve powered with it. Thank you for watching, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful new year.

Love the Lightning. Great video, maybe slightly over-edited, for example regarding tire pressure. It was stated the recommended 36 psi apparently contributed to wear on the edges of tires. What psi was it changed to? Was the ride negatively impacted? Did it seem to stop the excessive tire wear? Perhaps specific guidance is a liability issue. Very informative video overall.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. You are correct that I had to do a lot of editing. I started with about an hour of footage, and repeated myself a lot. I guess I am really excited about the truck. :-) Included in the cut was the statement about after Goodyear had evaluated my tires. They recommended a 40-42 psi. The problem with leaving that was liability as you stated. I forgot to say the exact tires they were, and with Ford putting a variety of tires on these lightnings I don’t want someone to follow my direction with different tires and it causing problems. For your info, these tires are Hankook Dynapro AT2. After I started increasing PSI to 40 it helped the problem, but once the winter started the tires already had too much tread loss on the shoulders to disperse water, slush, and grip in the snow. So I just upgraded to Falken Wildpeak AT3w tires, and will be posting about that video soon. In the meantime, Here’s a video I did with more specifics when I had Goodyear evaluate my tires and suspension if it will help you. Thank you for watching. I was specifically speaking about the lariat gas version versus the electric version. I have been seeing several different dealers on Facebook (there is a Facebook group called “No Markup Fords”) offering up to even 15 K off of MSRP just make sure that the MSRP is under 80 K and you will also get a $7500 federal tax credit , which can be applied at certain dealers at the time of purchase, which could equal about 20 K off of the MSRP price. So for about 60 K you could have a similar truck to mine however, mine was just over 80 K on MSRP but when I bought it it was in December 2022 so I fell under the previous rules so I still got the tax incentive.

Thank you Justin for watching. You are correct to be apprehensive about the range in the winter. It takes about a 10% hit. But don’t let that stop you from getting one. Right now you should be able to find a good deal. Here’s a video I did testing winter driving with my new tires. Lightning Mike - New Tires - First Road Test kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs2oks1qvpjMiok.html My suggestion is to get the extended range battery, then in the winter the range on a road trip will give you about 250 miles max. However, what you do is drive no more than 70mph, and stop every 180 miles. Charge it up to 80% each time. It will only take a charge station about 25 minutes to do that. It will also give you time to stretch your legs every 2.6 hours.

Yeah, I would go to a different dealer. I’m sorry, but a lot of dealers are crooks. Now is a good time to look for a good deal go to autotrader.com and do a nationwide search for the type of truck you’re looking for and call the dealer up and negotiate with them over the phone and it makes things a lot easier, even if you get paperwork started over the phone Personally I wouldn’t sign on the line until I actually saw the vehicle but whatever dealer you work with or look up all the reviews about them and you can tell from that usually if they’re crooks or manipulative. Hope that helps because now is a really good time to get a good deal on a 2023 if you can find the right place since there are still several on the lots.

Hi Mike, thanks for your insight on your Lightning! I also own a 2023 Lightning since September and am loving it. One thing that bothers me and you all might have the same issue. When a single sensor fails the vehicle will not start. I had a "Pedestrian Sensor Failure" notice come up and the truck would not operate. I think for a simple sensor failure there should be an override feature allowing the driver to still use the truck. I had to get the truck towed to the dealer to fix. I've owned many F-150's without a "Pedestrian Sensor", and never hit one. Don't treat the drivers like children and let us choose what sensors should disable the vehicle. BTW, I Like your hard top where did you purchase it?

I’d consider getting your truck but I don’t think it would meet my needs with my specific camping trip. It’s about 200 miles in October in Michigan. I’d really like to try it in your truck. I just think my usual 4 hours would be much longer or I’d get stranded. The range would probably by at put in half towing my trailer.

Yeah, if you are towing more than 100 miles one way you will have to prepare to charge on the way at least once, but the cool thing is that while you’re there if you have a 240 outlet for an RV, you should be able to charge up your truck while you’re camping as long as you have the right adapter.

Thanks for the video Mike! I've been watching your videos for a while even though I've had a Lightening Lariet since June. Best truck ever hands down. I live near COS up in Park County and the Lightening takes the trip to the springs or Denver several times a month. The range is great. I'll mention it does fantastic in the mountains going up and down highway 24. It does excellent in the deep snows we have on unplowed roads, and is great when you set the depart times and the truck is nice and warm when it's 0 degrees outside. I travel 30 miles of dirt roads in my trips to and from the Springs, and it is very smooth on dirt and wash board roads. As compared to an ICE vehicle with 4 wheel drive, the Lightening is so much better in the ice, snow, and mud. I charge off the excess power from my solar panels so my charging power is free and I still sell several hundred kilowatts back to the grid each month. Saves huge amounts of money compared to gas trucks I've owned. These trucks are just the best. Thanks for the great content and reviews!

I love how it drives in the snow too, but the uneven wear on my tires made me a little concerned so I just got them changed out to Falken Wildpeak AT3w because they are supposed to be good in wet, ice and dry roads not just snow. I’m about to go record another video when it gets cold on Monday doing another cold weather test, but I agree I love it in cold and warm weather. I have been looking at these in the long-range version the thing I don't understand is the trucks I have seen have a stated range of 134 miles on the dash guage at 55 percent battery that is only 243 miles total range. This was on the Lariat trim. Any thoughts? Thanks
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 3 ай бұрын
The stated range on the dash is what we owners call a “guessometer”. Most of the time it’s wrong. Which is sad because. Now you have to do the math manually, but you get used to it. You go by the percentage on the battery and the mi/kWh you are averaging then multiply that number times whatever is left of the battery. If you have an extended range it’s 131 kwh when at 100%

Great Review - I run a landscaping and mowing business, and I'm considering getting an electric vehicle (EV). But here's the thing: I tow around 3500 to 4000 pounds every day. Do you think this would impact the EV's range? Any insights?
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike Ай бұрын
Thank you. Yes towing will impact the range. When you get one make sure you get the Extended range version to give you the most range. Regular driving will give you 260 - 320 miles depending on driving conditions, speed and weather and whether it is summer vs winter. Driving in town will also get you better range than driving on the highway. I haven’t tested towing yet, but info that I have gotten from reliable sources on towing say that if you tow you should expect to get anywhere from 100 - 175 miles based on the weight you are hauling and driving conditions/speed. They also say that it tows like a dream. Something else to note: even though I don’t tow personally, when I haul equipment in the bed and frunk there is no impact to range for me. Hope this helps.

Not if you're an EA subscriber. It makes sense to subscribe if you're going to be charging away from home much. Saves 25% . Costs about. 17 cents per mile for my Lightning and costs about 22 cents per mile for an F-150 getting 18 mpg. But obviously, the big savings is home charging, I have solar and save big on daily driving.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike Ай бұрын
@MrMcGiblets1 is correct. I had an EA app and membership. So charging on the road is much cheaper. 22k miles is all at home and I only took one trip for 2 weeks last summer and it was a long 4k mile road trip. You can go back and see some of those videos. So I used my membership when I was charging it was about .36/kwh at that time except for Texas and one other state where charging was by the hour so it was super cheap. Like 4-7 dollars to “fill up”. Also, I charged at hotels at night and that was free so it averaged out to be only about $.15 per kilowatt hour overall for that traveling time which was not much more than charging at home. Speaking of home there is a movie theater near my house that has free charging so I have saved a lot of money getting extra free charging over the year. So I averaged that in and it brought my trip down to the same price as the .11 cost of charging at home. Anyways, the plugshare app has really helped me. You should check it out if you haven’t yet.

The battery warranty is 100k miles so I’m good there. This video is mainly about my actual cost in one year. Different vehicles depreciate differently and sometimes more or less one year to the next. Just a little over a year with nearly 26,000. I agree with everything you said. I will add that I tow my boat, a 17’ Boston Whaler at about 3,500 lbs. It is a fantastic tow vehicle for short to medium range towing. Boats have less wind resistance than campers so I don’t get too much of a range penalty; about 1.55 to 1.65 m/kWh. Towed 235 miles each way to Lake Chelan last Summer and only needed to charge one time coming back (stoped and charged three times going over as we did shopping and eating on the way as well as topped off charging for free at Rocky Reach Dam). With Ford Pro Trailer Backup and the great cameras unhitch and rehitch is a snap if you can’t find a pull through. I took my boat over and back across the Cascade Mountain Range and I couldn’t even feel the boat back there. Instant torque, effortless smooth acceleration for passing RV’s and better efficiency than I expected. Would I tow across the country with it? @@F150LightningMike Yes, Lariat. I’ll try that. Do you ever use recirculation on the HVAC? Do you drive in areas where people have bad exhaust, so you would notice immediately that recirculation was off? I am constantly having to reset the recirculation, at least 3-5 times a trip. It’s super annoying.

One note, I think the pro and xlt with the smaller screen have a dedicated button, we have to click the hvac button then click the recirculation button. When driving it’s hard and distracting because it’s in two different places on two different screens.

I do turn it on in the morning on the way to work because Colorado Springs has a combination of exhaust and “skunk weed” smells all the time, but you know what might be happening too is that if you turn on the defrost if it’s cold and the window is fogging up defrost turns off recirculation even in ICE cars.

Really nice.. I have SOLAR so my "fuel" cost is basically 0 -zero....😂 I ALMOST NEVER drive long distance anymore and i don't have any need for the FULL cab but ill take it.. I wonder why they aren't offering a simple xtra cab version?? Also, how about ditch the sunroof and put a SOLAR panel up there to "charge as you drive" feature..?? You can find some good deals on used ones, but I think it’s better still to get a new one because there are several dealers giving discounts. So I would recommend finding a trim that you like that is under the $80 K federal guideline limit for MSRP. Then find a dealer that is giving a good discount. Some of them are offering up to 15,000 off MSRP. It’s just very important that you make sure that the MSRP not the discounted price is under 80 K if you want to get the federal tax discount. Also, some dealers that are signed up with it through the IRS can give you that $7500 off in addition to their other discounts.

If you had solar on your home, the use of an EV makes your pay back faster for the cost of PV system, it snowballs. I payed myself back for my 41 panels in three years. The level 2 ford charger uses 6000 watts that has my 2 - 4400 watt inverters that run everything in my home right on the edge so I had to add another 4400 watt inverter to handle the house and charge my truck. I have right at 13,000 watts of solar panels so I can only charge my truck on really sunny days because I seldom get the full 13,000 watts of power from them. 23 kwh of lithium batteries so I like to get them fully charged prior to connecting the truck charger. I only drive my truck a couple days a week and then only about 60 mile round trip max. So from 70% to 85% SOC it takes about 3 hours to charge. But I can always charge a little on several days to get it back to 85%.

As far as EV trucks go...yes they aren't great if you're towing long distances regularly but most truck owners rarely or never tow...I think it's something like 80 or more percent of truck owners don't tow. The Silverado EV with the big 215kwh battery is probably the way to go. Kyle from Out of Spec has done a bunch of testing lately and it seems quite capable of towing long distances and it can charge at over 350kw pretty deep into the battery pack (with the right charging station).

It’s just crazy how cheap the gas is in the US. A F-150 with a gas engine would be extremely expensive to buy and run here in Sweden, Europe. Gas is about 9 dollars per gallon and the tax for a F-150 is around 3000 dollars per year. And the gasoline truck would cost about 100 000 dollars to buy new. It’s really a millionaire only vehicle here. For an EV, 1 kWh costs about 10 cents and the tax for the all EV:s regardless of the model is 36 dollars. The F-150 Lightning however costs 150 000 dollars for the base model… 50 000 dollars more than the gasoline version. You can buy 7 Toyota Corollas for one Lightning.

There’s no way a Lightning could work for me. Last week my Ford dealership said they don’t even recommend towing with a Lightning and he also mentioned that a new battery is $45,000. The resale on Lightnings and most EVs will be horrendous. Having said that, I’m grateful for all of you early adopters.

Check out the Out of Spec EV towing challenge of the Lightning, the Rivian, the Cyber Truck and the Silverado EV. As for using it to haul 6K locally, that wouldn't be a problem. People don't understand how much time you actually save owning an EV (if you have charging at home). Day to day you don't have to go out of your way to fuel your vehicle. You don't have to leave work early to fuel up or spend an extra 10 minutes getting fuel before getting home to your family after work...Yes it takes longer to road trip but if you add up the time you save the rest of the year you either save time with an EV or break even...this is assuming home charging and that you don't road trip monthly. You also have to look at how long you actually spend just sitting in your while charging. As fast as most cars charge now you're usually done charging by the time you've gone into go to the bathroom and get food. My car is usually done before I'm ready to leave and I need the break after 2-3 hours on the road. I love EV road tripping and EV life in general.

Nice, even, to the facts. Eventually, we’ll get through to the naysayers. We built a 3.6 kW solar array to charge the lightning. (Checkout the build)That wouldn’t be enough for your level of miles, as it can only out back 20-30 miles per day in the winter. But we’re bumping the battery backup up to 20kW in a few months and we’ll be able to put back 50-60 miles per day which would be enough, on average to fill up a truck, driven the average number of miles, which is around $14k/year. That system should pay itself off in around 5 years at our current electric prices of $.17 per kW, which is also the national average. Who had a gas station in their back yard? We do. It also provides backup power to the house, even if we need to use the truck in a power outage.

I don’t think he breezed over it - he simply said he has not needed to do it. I also mentioned in my write up that long-haul tows may not be as desirable as short range ones but I believe that for 90-95% of the actual use cases for the F-150s the fully electric would fit the bill. That being said - I’m NOT for any government mandates - I think you need to buy what you need for what you do and YOU should make to choice. That’s the nice thing about Ford - they have a ton of options from BEV to Hybrid ICE to Diesel. I also did not purchase to “save the planet” - I purchased it for the technology and the 0-60 in 3.8 seconds 😬. But I have to say, when I get into our other ICE vehicles now I can say that the exhaust smell is much more noticeable to me than before I started driving a BEV, and I prefer the BEV experience - but I have no issues with traditional ICE if they do what you need them to.
