When I first saw Angel fish, I thought they were the most beautiful fish. Then I saw the Discus and it was a done deal. Discus are like dancers to me. The way they move, glide, turn, interact. So beautiful. Thank you for sharing your love of Discus fish.

Just my opinion, but I think discus raised in what is pretty much a sterile environment is what is giving us weak and fragile discus. My discus pairs are in tanks with deep sand substrate, mulm, rocks, and driftwood. The tanks are also only kept at 26-27C. I have never had to worm my discus and from each batch of fry only lose maybe 1-2 early on. I have grown a number of my fry to adulthood and at no time have I had to worm or medicate them. What I have observed is the parents leading their fry around the tank to graze on the driftwood and rocks and mulm - this I believe acts to gut load the fry with bacteria that they need to stay strong and healthy. Just like us, the healthiest individuals have a good biome of gut bacteria.

Try breeding 10,000 fish in your water and you would go bust in a season. I honestly think this guy knows a lot more about the subject than you will ever know

You make a good point and one that is worthy of further discussion, this is after all how we learn and advance. Working with natural systems is often the best way to go because you are harnessing a large range of elements that have evolved over thousands of years to work together to form ecological systems. I've observed that most of the fish that have are purchased from the sterile tanks of fish suppliers, visibly improve when they are eventually released into 'scaped' tanks. It's good to question everything, experiment, learn and share ..... keep up the good work!
@puliraja4801

correct. but this one a hatchery. sterile environment is for breeder convenience. not for the fish. they want a constant fry production rate whereas, in natural systems the fish will decide their rate of reproduction. But, I prefer to buy wild caught ones or naturally raised ones rather than the delicate farmed ones.

Whenever I see content on Discus breeding, I come more to the realisation that mine are stunted. My community tank raised fry are well over 3 months old and they aren't anywhere near the size of those 3-month olds he showed.

Discus need to be feed 5 times a day and need to be vacuumed at least every other day. Growing out a discus is hard but people insist in getting them small because they are cheaper; its always best to get them close to adulthood where they dont require not even half the work
@lemonlizard1
@lemonlizard1 10 ай бұрын
I've bred cories a couple times in the past, and had the same issue. Luckily, it's unlikely they're stunted, just smaller than the farmed ones. There are two possible reasons as to why your discus are smaller than farmed discus. The first one is the fact that farmed discus are fed A LOT. I mean 5-10+ times a day, often live bbs or extremely high quality food. The other reason is the extreme cleanliness of water. Water that isn't changed often enough can cause stunted growth. The far majority of farms keep an auto water change system that is doing a 100% water change multiple times a day. This just isn't something the average hobbyist can keep up with, which is why farmed fish usually grow much faster than home bred fish.

@kylepawelczyk163 10 ай бұрын
You need to feed heavy high protein foods and these farms are doing 80% water changes at least every other day. If discus don’t have extremely low nitrates and heavy feedings they will stunt, guaranteed.

Thank you both for a lovely discus tour and fishy speak. Some day….discus have always been on my fishy bucket list. I’ve been fish keeping off and on since the late 60’s, of course starting out with guppies. Now retired and more time for getting back into the hobby. Currently have 4 tanks, from 2.5 to biggest-55 gal. I’m sure there’s room for a discus tank in my future❤☮🐠🦐🪴

Does anyone know how big do baby guppies have to be before I can put them with the adult guppies aside from the general statement that anything that can fit in any fishes mouth is fair game. I was hoping to find out if wake up you should be like a quarter inch or half inch because I seriously doubt that needs to be like a whole 1 inch because surely a quarter inch or half inch is enough for them to grow out and be put with the adult puppies, because I don’t want my babies to get eaten.

Hi, KeepingFishSimple. What type of betta (plakat, long fin, veil tail) do you think would be happiest in a 23 litre (6 gallon) tank? Dimensions: 30cm in length, 22cm in depth, 41cm in height. I know a tall tank isn't ideal :( but my parents bought it for me as a gift and couln't return it. Can my fish still thrive?
