Here is a dissection of the orange Fram Extra Guard. This filter was used on a 2012 Honda Civic 1.8 liter for around 10,000 miles(16,093 KM) I personally would not use this filter but I used this improved Fram to see if the construction could withstand the extremes of an engine after 10,000 miles. I can conclude this filter definitely withstood the extremes. A great video that compares the former fram extra guard with the new and improved version: • Fram Extra Guard Oil F...

If Fram oil filters were as bad as people say; you'd hear of class action lawsuits against Fram. Fram has been making oil filters the same way for 40+ year's. Side note: Fram sets their micron rating at 20 microns. Where as others are using 30 microns as their benchmark.

Yea, Fram extra guards are ok filters. I only used this filter just to see the construction after 10K. I won't use it again on the 2012 Civic again. I have nothing against the orange fram but I like the full synthetic media from Fram Ultra Synthetic, Wix XP, or Purolator Boss.

@@TheRichardF10 how about Bosch oil filter's? Respected name: I cut one open that was on my mom's explorer and one of the pleats was separated from the end disc. I GENTLY CUT IT OPEN TOO. The silicone adbv was the softest I've ever seen though.

@@danp7463 I have heard about purolator/Bosch cellulose medias tearing close to the end caps on the Bobistheoilguy forums but those articles are about 5 years old now. Who knows if they still tear from the pleats. I prefer full synthetic filters over cellulose or even synthetic blend media because they are typically reinforced with wire backing or nylon mesh. I've used Bosch filters in the past with zero issues. Matter of fact, I have never had oil related issues even with cheap oil and filters.

@@danp7463 I bought a dozen Bosch Premium filters from Rock Auto for $3.50 each, which I thought was a good deal. After running a couple of them (so far) for 6K - 7K miles in our Hondas, I cut them open to check the build quality. So far they have held up pretty well, and I compare the construction and materials to the WIX or the Purolator. No complaints here.

@@TheRichardF10 I have used the Fram filters in several of my cars over the years. Anywhere from the Extra Guard, to the Tough Guard, and the Ultra Synthetic. For you to show how the Extra Guard held up after 10K miles is quite impressive! I wouldn’t even do that with the Tough Guard (even though it’s rated for 15K). The Ultra Synthetic, yes because of it’s sturdier construction. People on these forums slam on Fram, and maybe it’s because of urban legends, but for me, after cutting open the various Frams, they’ve all held up well. Of course it helps if you don’t “hot-rod” your cars and change the oil and the right intervals. My two cents.

That Fram filter looks good after 16,000km. Fram has a bunch of professional engineers who design and test the oil filters, so I don't get all excited about some of the crazy information posted by a bunch of people, who are as far from an engineer as you can get (back yard experts). My Toyota uses a Cartridge filter and it has no end caps, people getting excited over nothing. Great video, thanks for posting

As you stated, "There are better filters.} For the small amount of money for the better filters, I think I will keep buying the better filters. I would not want to leave one of these filters on for 10,000 miles. As far as oil goes, I would not want to go more than 3,000 to 5,000 miles between oil changes, no matter how good of oil it is. As long as it is the right size oil filter as long as you change it with every oil change and do regular oil changes it doesn't matter who's it is. Spin on type is ancient tech now and you'd have to do something really bad to screw it up to the point it would matter in and oil change interval.

I don't think a small amount of unfiltered oil seeping through is a problem as long as particles are caught on the next pass. No filter gets everything on the first pass. Some are more efficient than others but more is better. But a little less may not be that bad either.

Even though the filter looks good, there's no way i would run 10,000 miles on that filter, maybe their ultra synthetic filter. I actually have the ultra synthetic filter on my honda right now. I do 5,000 mile interval changes. Using castrol edge high mileage, and added Lucas low viscosity stabilizer to try it out see if i notice a difference.

I wouldn't run any filter or oil 10k miles. I don't care what the filter or oil claims. the fram ultra syn filter is great but there are other filters just as good cheaper easy. Napa filters are wix filters also napa oil is Valvoline oil (as of now). I've ran Walmart supertech oil synthetic for years in everything I've owned since I was 17 i'm 31 now. I've only had 1 engine failure and it was more than like me being a complete dumb ass than the oil/filter I used. Sooo take that as you may. End of the day, if you trust it and use it... go for it.
