To grow our farm, we need to invest in it, and this year we went big on peonies. This video is the unboxing of those peonies, and are these peony roots ever massive! We are really excited about all these varieties of peonies, as they are a mix of early, mid, and late season peonies, in lots of our fav best selling colours. Now we have enough for a massive field of peonies, that will provide for us for many years to come. It's going to be hard not to let a bunch of flowers bloom, just so we can see what we have with our own eyes. 3 years of waiting till they are mature, that will be tough!

Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. It's hard work to build a life worth living, and completely worth it!

I love peonies and was involved in a group buy in Ottawa. I spent $70 dollars and my husband was “grumpy” with me. Oddly enough I ordered Bridal shower and it didn’t come in and I had to substitute a different white. I almost bought the “Do tell” and decided I didn’t have space. Silly me, because now I have regret. I enjoyed your vision and your enthusiasm. I live for the “Three days of Peony Perfection” every year.

I wanted a 'Julia Rose' Itoh peony. Found a big plant at our expensive garden center for $69! This fall, I found it for sale online in bare-root form for way, way less. That's when I learned there are even more gorgeous varieties. Is care any different than old-fashioned peonies? I saw someone cut them to the ground at end of season.

Peonies are my FAVORITES! I added a few this year and moved some that I have been meaning to for years as they weren’t getting enough sun where the former gardener planted them in my current garden. If one day you decide to leave the flower growing business you can always dig up the peony roots and sell them, you will make your money back and then some!😊

That is unless you live in the deep south of the USA....I was in my early 20s in the mid-80s, and I had to have a peony. I'm near 60 now. If I had listened to women my age who gardened when I was young, I would never have spent the money. I had a young girl tell me this summer that she was buying some peonies. I said, "Don't do it. It's just like purchasing a little future sadness for yourself." She said she was going to microclimate them and put buckets of ice on them, twice a month, in the winter. I thought the same thing. $ gone bye-bye 😂

It has variegated foliage. I don't even care if it blooms. But it's towards the back and probably not getting enough sun so it looks stunted. 'Aucubaefolia'

Itohs tend to be more expensive, so I'm not sure how feasible it is as a cut flower, but if you need a different yellow in your personal collection...! What a glorious unboxing! I've got a mystery peony that was planted by a previous owner of our home... Based on how close it is to the trunk of a very mature crepe myrtle tree & how massive the main root of the peony is, I'm sure it is old. Every year it tries to grow but it just doesn't have enough light or space so I dig the pieces I can & transplant them, one is finally getting big enough that it will hopefully bloom next spring *fingers crossed*

@@gardeningjunkie2267 I'm in zone 9B so growing peonies well is a challenge under the best of circumstances. I'm following all the best practices for cultivation in my zone. The Sarah Bernhardt Peony is an old time peony that smells beautiful. Each bud on the root will be a stem or flower next year. So I would pick them. I don’t think it weakens the plant. However from having a flower farm maybe different rules from a home garden. Some of those roots had a lot of buds so the plant should be mature enough to flower. Definitely get with a florist and sell the peonies. Springtime is prime wedding and peony season. I plant sweet William too. In my area they both bloom at the same time. Looks very pretty together. I have do tell peony in my garden. Very distinct color and look. I have over 30 peony varieties in my garden in zone 7. You made good choices with what you picked.

Peonies are my FAVORITE flowers! It makes me so happy to see someone else gushing about them, too. I only have ten peonies in my suburban garden. I'm looking to add to that collection, but it's difficult to decide on varieties. So many choices...and I'm a Libra. 🥴 Of the varieties I have, 'Paula Faye' is #1 on my list, I have two. They're early so I have to look quick before they're finished. The display is breathtaking. I have a 'Do Tell' next to my driveway for about 20 years. It hasn't been as abundant in blooms lately and I am considering lifting it. Perhaps it's gotten buried under amendments and mulch. I have a "hedge" of peonies under my bedroom window. 'Gay Paree' and a similar style whose name escapes me. It's funny, I bought them from a peony farmer and told him the size of the space. I thought 5 plants should fit. He said, "No. 3 is enough." Wow! He was right. They grow as big as a shrub. I also bought 'Moonstone' variety because the farmer said that was his favorite. I stored that plant in my garage for ten years! I couldn't decide where to plant it. I'd bring it outside every summer to get some sun. Toward the end, it was a spindly single stem. I finally planted it 3 years ago. This year, oh my! It had 16 gorgeous white double blooms. Heavy blooms. I always intend to harvest buds at the marshmallow stage to extend the season and you can miss it by one day. I'm in Minneapolis, Minnesota (recently rezoned to 5a) and we've had really hot springs and even hotter summers with little rain. The latter helps keep the mildew at bay. I've always cut back the foliage at end of season, but this year didn't get around to it at my usual time. The fall color was spectacular. Deep russet red. In future, I won't be so hasty to clean up. I have a couple blush/white peonies that came with the house so I don't know their names. They bloom at different times so they're probably different varieties. I have a magenta that was gorgeous in the beginning, but neglect and weeds have diminished its beauty. I planned to move it this fall, again, timing. Next year. It sent a runner a couple feet away. I didn't know peonies could spread in that way. I want to order plants now so I don't miss out. 'Angel Cheeks' is on the list. I'd heard about the fragrance. I'm thinking of trying 'Itoh' peonies to replace some out-of-control Ilex shrubs to shield a front patio area. I loke that peonies die back to the ground. Makes snow shoveling easier.

I love peony roots!! I could look at each one of them one by one if you were to show each root division :) FYI - all the coral charm peonies will grow from ANY root devision , doesn't have to be an eye for them to start a new plant, all varieties of coral charm could be grown from a tiny peace of root, just gonna take longer, other peony varieties , especially hybrids need eye and /or piece of their old woody root to grow, so dont mess with them obviously , but you could divide half of your corals to double your crop easily right away !! there is a Russian peony enthusiast on youtube Lena Nova Peony , she actually has a ton of videos where she explains how to divide peony roots properly

I know you do cut flower arrangements. Have you ever thought of selling pots and hanging baskets. Start your annuals in the green house, by seeds and cuttings. Then make nice arrangements. Like a center plant then surround the bottom with petunias, super bells etc.

We don't have a heated greenhouse, and in our area, you need heat to be able to do hanging baskets. They also have some investment cost to them, in the pots, ect, which makes me nervous about having them at the self serve roadside stand, because they have a lit higher theft risk then cut flowers. Maybe in the future though

Pics of coral varieties are a bit misleading, they're shown right before petals fell of, they are much brighter. Love those. Of those which you dont have in this order I love mothers choice, old faithful. What else... owen cousins, obviously pastelegance and etched salmon but those are quite expensive. Light yellows like sunny girl, sunny boy, lemon chiffon i like theoretically - havent seen those in person.

I wish you did a master class about peonies! Last year I got excited about them from you video then and I bought like 10 plants bare root that I put on the ground past autumn here, I live in Argentina, south America. In my little not developed town they don't know much about plants even in the small kind of nurseries here. So I don't know much about growing them. What it means not to cut the flower if you do have one in the first year? Just to leave it in the ground to die by its own? Where I can find a list of the different peonies flowering in different times? Sorry! You got me so excited!!! ❤

It's tricky to find when they flower - but with some searching you can find if it is an early, mid or late blooming variety, and then they will be spaced by a week or so.

Flower farmers cut everything with long stems, and with a peony, to do that, you would cut off a lot of the plants leaves - which it needs to get energy for future years. So, I won't cut for the first 3 years or so, so that the plant can get strong and healthy. If I cut the flower off, with a tiny short stem, then it would be fine. But the best of all, is to take the buds off the plant, so that it doesn't put energy into blooming for those first few years.

I saw a peony that was a double with a wine colour to it. So beautiful. The time it takes to come to where it's ready for picking gives you time to improve the soil add in nutrients so you get maximum blooms. Exciting to see these as photos, waiting for the real blooms later.

If things go sideways, at least you can divide the roots later for any plants needing replacement or more of.

Amazing collection. You are thinking long term. I love my pink peonies, which flower in a part shade setting. All your peonies look great - i think the coral ones looked the most unique. I think considering the time when they bloom, the pink, coral and white are your best bet. The red and maroon ones also are bright and good but probably not as useful for spring/ early summer bouquets.

We tried to keep the list to peonies that were 15$ or less, but with taxes and shipping on top, the price gets pretty high. Luckily, they can outlive me and sell for a good price, but it was a big investment

These large orders come on palates, and are usually 200-300. The peonies are heavy, so I think this might have been $350. Tax is a lot larger percentage, lol

sorry- but won't these peonies reproduce over the years and need to be split? And, will they need to be tied up to hold the weight of the flowers? I am US- and our peonies bloom for 2 weeks and get so top heavy they fall over the MINUTE they start to open.
