So cool to see some of the "older" Ford Nascar high port V8's being used in a different kind of racing, don't follow drag racing that much but this car engine/head combo is way cool, that high rpm sound reminds me when some of the Ford Nascar teams were turning ridiculous RPM's at the end of the the straights like the 10,000+ Leonard is talking about oh man love that sound!!!

I ran 3 different Cleveland engines. They were manufactured in Australia for 2 years I believe. The Australian block and heads were punched out from the same piece. Which meant they heated and cooled the same. A lot less likely to warp. You could just about throw baseball through the ports. Polish the heads and add some other goodies... and you could run pass after pass and crush dreams with a grin.

Wow. What a great video. I’m 70 years old and watched a lot of drag racing. Nice to see N/A Ford power, but more than that: 10,000 rpm with a pushrod V8….that is amazing. Not so long ago, if you could turn 8500 everyone assumed you were running the ragged edge of blowing up on every run. Valve train technology and aftermarket blocks and rotating assemblies have continued to improve the breed. I had to laugh when he said he is using “old style” NASCAR heads.

Those castings are in fact over 25 years old, C3's and D3's are canted, and flow in the 400's int. Im sure close to 16:1 comp. too... great all motor small cube combo!

@@collegeparkwhiteboy The C3 castings are splayed valve, the D3's are canted. Nascar run the D3 castings all the way into the mid 2000s prior to the FR9. This engine is more than likely 17+ to 1 and Over a 1" of lift on the camshaft. Essentially a Australian prostock deal.
@mellowolf
@mellowolf 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they are based off the d3 head but both the intake ports and exhaust ports have been welded up and raised so much that the valve cover rail had to be raised up too . The chambers were redone with 2.300 int and 1.58 exh valves and I think the valve angle were changed too (it been a long time ago that we did them I don’t remember if we changed the valve angle or not but I think we did) and yes it has over 1.00 in lift cam in it. So yes it’s based off from the old nascar heads but are nothing like what they used in nascar.

He's just found the flow he needed. Not to bring up Chevy for anything important, but when you build a 4.8L vs. a 6.0L they basically turn about the same top end RPM. 283's used to be RPM king back in the double hump days, but the double humps had the right flow for a 283 or maybe 327. On a 350 or 400 not so much.

@@kramnull8962 I know guys with small block chevys years ago,were turning 10,000 on strictly drag engines. I was referring to the guys that run Chevy engines in Ford bodies. It's nice to see that guys can be very competitive with Ford powered Fords!
@kramnull8962
@kramnull8962 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike583 My only point was just the fact that most all of those 10,000 RPM sbc's were the small cubes. Not a 350 or 400. Wasn't until they got better heads that flowed better for the bigger cubes. Not the double humps on those bigger motors.

He mentioned Vizard... who made record of everything he touched associated with cylinder heads for decades. You only have to keep the bottom together and make the most of static compression ratios. The Heads and the Camshaft are what most interest me, figure he's into the 0.900 + lift range with duration pushing 300° @.050, Intake opening around 40° to 42° BTDC and Intake closing around 74° to 76° ABDC with 106° L/S Takes one wild ass camshaft to turn 10,000 while making HP to the top. Those secrets we'll never know, but it's fun to speculate. Nice Operation. (and of course, he mentioned the importance of chassis tuning)
