I was a US Army soldier stationed close to the Seoul Olympic Stadium - I was at the Olympic Games the day Brahim Boutayeb won and he was amazing! It was the last race of the day and saw him break Lasse Viren’s Olympic 10000m record from 1972. I will never forget that day!

I am 56 and last week trying to emulate Brahim Boutayeb style I nearly beat the 20 minutes for the5 ks, I used to do it ( on a recreative basis) running under 20 minutes for the 5ks. Nowadays I am just trying to remain in the game. What an inspiration Brahim! I saw this race live, and never forgot it

نعم كما قال المعلق الفرنسي تحطيم الرقم القياسي العالمي كان في جيبه و لكنه تهاون في اللحظات الأخيرة كان ذلك المعلق غاضبا جدا.

J'étais le coach de Brahim BOUTAIEB et son lieu d'entraînement se situait à Sienne en Italie. Il ne faut pas le confondre avec Hammou BOUTAYEB qui n'a aucun lien familial avec Brahim. Sa carrière a été brève car je pense qu'il n'était pas préparé à être une star et une vedette médiatique. Après son titre, sa gestion est devenue difficile car il avait perdu le goût de l'effort pour rester au niveau et aller encore plus loin. Il en avait les capacités mais ni le comportement ni les exigences nécessaires n'ont pas suivi. Dommage.

East and North Africans are good in running..to name some few of my favorite runners Kenenisa Bekele, Gabrselassie, Paul tergat, Kiprop, Aouita, Elguerouj, Morcely, Kowman, Skah, Miruts Yifter and so on. Thanks for the post.

1988 was a great year for African runners. The Kenyans won the 800, 1,500 and 5000 meters and a Moroccan won the 10,000. The only distance race they didn't win was the Marathon, which was won by Italian Gilendo Bordin but Africans took the silver and bronze medals.

Totally agree with you. He trained with and was coached by said aouita at the time as well. Got Saud's documentary filmed in the lead up to the 1988 Olympics. Was a good documentary.

Did he maybe peak to soon? I mean at the time Khalid Skaf was also 21 and 4 years later he won that olympic tittle as well and continued to have a great career in half marathons.

I think this was the last 10,000 race that didn't have water stations on the track. I remember watching this race on television and Boutayeb dominated the second half of this race.

the last 10000m also that I remember being run during the daytime....all of them after were in the late evening to avoid the heat of the day....

@@docpj72 These athletic competitions in 1988 were all held during day time due to television schedules. Rio 2016 had the final of women's 10k race at midday as well and it produced a world record.

I remember this race well. What’s really interesting is that today it’s unlikely 1-2 people would run away with the race as often happened back then - in 1987 Paul Kipkoech ran away with it, then in 1991 Richard Chelimo and Moses Tanui, and in 1992 Chelimo and Khalid Skah. These days even when they’re running sub-27, you’ll have a half-dozen people still there with a lap to go.

يوم لا ينسى، بعد أن نمنا على "فقصة" او خيبة "سعيد عويطة" الذي اكتفى بالبرونز في 800م، أصبحنا على فرحة بوطيب الذي ابلى بلاء الأبطال بعد حصده لذهبية 10000متر + رقم قياسي اولمبي وكان بإمكانه تحطيم الرقم العالمي تحية وطنية لهذا البطل المغوار...

متفق معك قلة التجربة والمستوى التعليمي أكيد لعب دوره كان بإمكانه تحطيم الرقم القياسي العالمي وله كل المقومات حتى في الامتار الأخير تباطئ بشكل غريب وكانه يترجل ماشيا ...كان عداءا واعدا وله قدرات عالمية لكن للأسف زاغ عن الطريق الصحيح ...

عويطة كان معطوب في فخذه و يخوض اخر تجربة له ومع ذلك نال الميدالية النحاسية بوطيب ضيع على نفسه الرقم القياسي العالمي.

JEAN LOUIS PRIANON is our local hero from Reunion , he is stil running sometime at the age of 50+ (53 precisely) and he is still very competitive even against youngster!! when some of the guys in that race are resting in peace......

لم أفهم أبدا لماذا قام في آخر السباق بانطلاقة سريعة جدا ثم قام بإبطاء إيقاعه في الخطوات الأخيرة قبل الوصول. أعتقد بأنه أضاع رقما قياسيا.

هو كان صغير ٢١ سنه فقط ويفتقد للخبره وربي وفقه لاني المرشح للفوز العداء الكيني وهو فاز بتوفيق من الله وكان محظوظ لاني الكيني لم يكن في احسن احواله وكان محظوظ بعكس عويطه كان سيء الحظ خسر ٨٠٠متر ولم يتاهل في ال١٥٠٠ مع انه حامل الرقم العالمي ولكن كان حظه سيء وكل شيء نصيب وتوفيق من الله

Que fácil se vé correr a Brahim Boutayeb,parece que va trotando y no a ritmo de record mundial. Ganó fácilmente con record olímpico!! Y muy inteligente la carrera realizada por Salvatore Antivo que obtuvo el segundo lugar.

Boutaib is such a mystery. Why did he not go on to even bigger and better things? Why did he not continue to compete at 10,000 metres? Most of the Moroccans came on after the potential arrival of EPO in the mid '90's. Unless he wasn't really 21 years old as mentioned in Seoul, and was actually older, then his career just doesn't make a lot of sense (a little bit like Kirui).

Because he had enemies inside moroccan federarion, he was even deleted from the list of this race without being consulted, fortunately he discoverde the complot before the start of the competition..

Rather, they came after Aouita, it took ten years to « emulate » new champions … but Khalid Skah was winning before EPO, in 1994, they won Ekiden … El Guerrouj was already in the podium of 5000m juniors behind Gebreselassie, the EPO seems to arrives in 1994-1995 in Athletics, of course all Moroccans took EPO as others athletes … The most surprising fact is that he ran alone without rabbits and nearly broke the WR in Olympic Games …
