After a late dinner with the family we went for a walk along the harbor in Edinburgh. While walking we enjoyed the quote beauty of the city and the long twilight.

I remember the first time I had a walking holiday in Scotland in the summer. Came out of a pub in Ullapool to walk back to the B&B at closing time. I thought I was really drunk as it was still bright outside. One of the most weird sensations I have experienced. I’ve travelled around the world and Scotland, particular the outdoor is still up there with the best holidays. My favourite mountain is Stac Pollaidh (Stac Polly). It’s a small mountain so doesn’t take long to walk up (car park nearby) but the views at the top are some of my most favourite views. It’s like viewing prehistoric Britain post Ice Age.

It's really interesting listening to an Americans impressions of our islands especially someone who evidently appreciates history and culture. Dood, what do you expect? It's like the North Pole up there.... If you go above the arctic circle (another 500 miles north or so), the sun doesn't set for a few days around June 21st. And if you get all the way to the pole it doesn't set for half the year then doesn't come up for the other half. In Helsinki, you can still navigate the streets at 2am (at this time of year) because it's so light.

Most people fail to realise just how far south the USA actually is, compared to Europe. NY is on the same latitude as Naples in southern Italy, and DC is level with Sicily. The north coast of Scotland, on the other hand is at 58 degrees...the same latitude as Churchill MB...where the polar bears regularly wander into town.
@wir154

@@alfresco8442 and the Shetland Islands are above 60 degrees and if you drew a line on a map directly west from the northernmost part of them, the first land you would hit would be the southern tip of Greenland! It's not often pointed out just how far North we are. The southernmost part of Britain is about the same latitude as Winnipeg Canada (though the climate's a lot milder). The Summer days are therefore quite long. However, come midwinter if you're a 9-to-5er you'll be going off to work in the dark and coming home in the dark!

You get the opposite in the winter with the dark nights, but it is generally not as cold as much of the rest of the World at this latitude in the winter. I actually live closer to the North Pole than South Georgia, or the southern tip South America is to the South Pole. Edinburgh probably is as well as I don't live much further north than it. If you are lucky you can sometimes see the Aurora Borealis once the nights get darker. I have only seen it really well twice, but I know I have missed some good displays in the last few years. If I went out looking for it every clear night, I would undoubtedly see it more often. I wouldn't come up to Scotland in the winter expecting to see it though, Lapland would be a safer bet for it.

Further south you go, the more regular night/day is, IE split 12/12 hours. UK summer time is like 18/6 (Scotland like more like 19/5) while winter is like 6/18

I'm glad you're enjoying the UK, but can I encourage you to adopt the current native spelling's, i.e. "harbour", rather than Noah Webster's versions. :-) (Awaits the pedants to point to out the historical English spellings and grammar prior to the colonial revolution.)
