Some properties you can raise food or barn horses. You can grow your own food. Some people are long haul truckers. Or they could work services locally . The average person working probably has much more than that. People get money. How do you think every home across America has been purchased?

Sourhern Aroostook county and definitely in the woods. Grocery shopping isn't just down the road. Island Falls or Houlton is closer than Bangor. Good as a camp to get away from home foe a weekend.

Love those prices. I was born in Maine and taken out to California as a child. I tried returning in 1996 after years working worldwide for John Deere Corp, marketing mgr. Italy and have cousins and high school buddies in Maine. I felt pushed out and away. Some said, James, you've BEEN AWAY. You're NOT truly a Mainer. WHAT??? That was cruel. It did hurt. And they meant it. 'AWAY'. When you hear this word you either suck it up and do your best, slowly trying to make strong friendships or leave. I lasted 2 years in my home town of Waterville. 3 Central ave. $39,000 for 4 bedroom. attic. basement. 1 acre. 2 car garage,. all wood floor 2 stories. new roof. New wood stoves. new kitchen floor. wood cabinets in kitchen. New bathrooms. That was an amazing PRICES $$. Lol I live in Malibu, California now and you'd get $8 million for that. LOCATION LOCATION. Take care. I have childhood friends in Bonanza, Arkansas. (Foster home) wonderful people. JD Magness and his family of 11. Virginia and Charles raised 9 children. Nice folks. wonderful Sunday dinners and Church and of course, the RACE TRACK. lol They loved the horses.

Back in the late '90s I left my HS teaching job in NJ and moved to Maine for a grad degree in forest management. I felt like I was home except I wasn't. The people are wonderful without exception. If you are from AWAY, however, everyone is friendly but without two or better yet "3 generations in the ground" you will never be a Mainer and will always be from AWAY. So be it. I still visit for random vacations and would like to live north of the Boston glow. Maine is a little bit wild west with few lawyers and sparse medical facilities but really nice people and magical forests. I was told by 1 person that folks from AWAY just don't stay and that's why they don't want to get too attached. @@jameshowardhall3115

$184 property taxes a year... I know I know why so low? Unorganized townships in Maine enjoy a low $6 a thousand valuation taxation. You can have all the water you like a lake cottage from the Mattawamkeag River. Hose here to tap the river. Drill a well about $4K or dig a 15' hole, put crushed gravel on the bottom, stack 3 foot concrete tiles and there's your dug well. Septic is tied to how many bedrooms and to handle 90 gallons per day per bedroom. Starts with an HHE 200 and have seen lots of 3 bedroom septic systems with concrete tank and leachfield put in for $5500. People pulling at you, the noise, hustle bustle takes it toll and everyone needs to run away to rural Maine! Bancroft ME, less than 60 people. Don't expect a Walmart super center or Lowes, Home Depot to set up shop here. No people, just wildlife, waterfront, woods.

The owner used an expert earthwork fellow from Wytopitlock to do the grounds and he poured a slab, provided for hook ups in the foundation for future well and septic. But tap into the river for all kinds of water. If you want more than a gray water system for a kitchen sink and shower, add your HHE 200 for a full blown concrete tank with leachfield septic system. The reverse is happening since COVID hit. It used to be 8 out of 10 people moved to the cities because that was where the jobs are. Now with high speed internet they are moving to safe, small, rural areas that are affordable and friendly like Maine. We would not be called Vacationland if bugs were a problem. @@hmartin751 - Starlink is $120/mo plus $599 of equipment. 30 days to try it with complete refund if unsatisfied. On setup, the little dish is on a swivel and it automatically finds the Starlink satellite/s direction ... if its good clearing your done, if not clear a few trees, if not send back. Its cheap bandwidth when you consider it will get over 100MB Down. jmo.

Spring when winter snow run off happens it would be the largest water volume. They use to float logs down this river so not a sand bar or shallow situation. Lots of water. 😀

Love all four seasons and hard to down hill ski, snowmobile, play pond ice hockey without the snow and winter season. Maine would not be "Vacationland" if we had bugs year round. Have family who lives in Leadville CO and they get that kind of snow to ski up in the Rockies. But sorry, not 10 feet of snow in Maine... global warming messing with our winters. Winter is just one of the four seasons and out every single day. Love to ski, downhill and cross country. Love to snowshoe, ice fish, play pond hockey with the grandchildren on local lakes! Cabin is new, on concrete slab with provisions thinking ahead for water / septic plumbing if you want. You can sell cabin that is insulated and easily trailer loaded and whisked away and what did you want to build, have in mind?
