The ease of piracy on the Dreamcast was insane! The only games my nephew actually owned were Sonic adventure and the Shenmue games. Everything else was on burned discs.

This is my favourite console of all time, and criminally discarded by the over-hyped, murky-looking sequel machine that was the PS2. For once, Sega got it right, but in the end, it didn't matter.

Much like the PS1 I knew a lot of people who owned a Dreamcast. Also just like the PS1 not many of those people I knew also bought Dreamcast games. The reindeer of the Utopia Boot Disk became a common sight when I went round to see friends. Eventually you could just burn a game and have it play, no boot disc required. Something interesting to me was that while the games could easily be played from a burnt CD, actually fitting them on a CD wasn't that easy. The scene often had to reencode assets or outright remove them in order for the larger games to fit on a standard CD. I didn't know for years that Grandia II was a single disc game as the pirated version came on three. My Dreamcast now needs to get its internal battery replaced, so time to buy a soldering iron, and the drive is dead and finding a GDEMU is proving to be a challenge. In the end for me the Saturn is the better system as I just have more memories connected to it because of the games.

Back in the Microplay days the store employees did a comparison of a Street Fighter game that was available for both the PS2 and the Dreamcast . They all decided that the only noticable difference was thought to be the PS2's emotion chip difference . Some blades of grass moved independently . Other than that the game looked the same .

Dreamcast produce very clean graphics back in those days. Lesser polygons and simpler geometry yes but it's definitely not ugly.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think it was the first console to produce proper 3D graphics that also looked good - the PS1 had far too much pixelization and texture warping and a lot of its games look really ugly today because of that, unlike the Dreamcast.

If only Sega waited a year or so to release the Dreamcast with a built in DVD player. That would've probably helped with it's lifespan and sales.

Dreamcast was an amazing console, suffering at the time for a focus on arcade experiences that had gone out of fashion. However, going back to it now it really is a massively overlooked system that has arguably aged much better than its competitors. I wish I'd taken more notice of it at the time, there was enough difference between it and the PS2 for a blissful coexistence.

I found a Dreamcast some time ago, dumped on the street with games and multiple controllers - including the VMUs. It's an awesome console decades on and its fate was undeserved to be known as Sega's hardware swansong. Thanks for another great video: I had no idea about much of this background. What were the games that you featured from 18:54 onwards? I'd like to check them out. 🙂

I actually got a Sakura Taisen Dreamcast, although I actually didn't play Sakura Taisen on it (played first two games on Saturn). I got it because I wanted to import a Dreamcast to play Phantasy Star Online 2, and decided to get a Sakura Taisen one just for the heck of it.

It’s just such a shame, in that this is the machine the Saturn could have been. It was open, it was well supported, it was welcoming, it wasn’t hard to develop for. They had just squandered so much of their goodwill of the mega drive/genesis era. It’s kind of interesting looking back at that Gen of consoles in that Nintendo had nearly identical issues with the GameCube at the time, and both are now some of the most well supported classic consoles with a still active user base

The Dreamcast was the first console that was purely mine so I have a lot of fondness. I've watched many a video revealing details about this fantastic console and I look forward to hearing of any potential new ones contained in this video. 1:55 - I had no idea where this advert was heaving. Right off the bat I can say this Dreamcast advert was a new one to me. Love the energy to it. 2:38 - Given Sega's precedent for rapid-fire hardware releases and add-ons, I could see this rumour being very believable at the time. 6:24 - An yet despite the difficulties, the Saturn still received a lot of games made for it in the Japanese region. Though I've heard the PS2 was also difficult to develop for compared to it's competition, so it seems that if a console is popular enough then such development difficulties are able to be surmounted. 11:10 - I was VHS supporter for ages but even I could see the significant impact the DVD functionality had on the Dreamcast vs PS2 story... or even the PS2 vs any of it's competitors. Putting aside the built up problems Sega had from past failures, it wouldn't be a stretch to claim that DVD capability could have completely changed the Dreamcast's fortunes. 19:02 - My brothers and I have often joked that the Dreamcast is a zombie console; this thing has never truly died and seems to have continued to get new games for it every year.

If that is true that sega already planned a follow up of the sega saturn back in 1995, then we can consider the sega saturn to be already dead on a rival right from the start,and in such case it’s no wonder that sega eventually did came up with the slogan “saturn is not our future” slogan in late 1997,sega could,ve already give up on the saturn in late 1995 in japan and in 1996 in the west,then only 2 or 4 million sega saturn systems would,ve been sold with only fewer games for it as well☹️

The attach rate for Dreamcast was actually pretty high, just not compared to other Sega consoles which have historically high attach rates. To your point though, it was ridiculously high to start, but fell off as piracy became more commonplace. PS2 saw the opposite; historically low attach rate early on before people bought actual games for it

Most interesting most desperate attempt from sega was to bundle a cheap dvd player with the dreamcast in the hopes to take advantage of the dvd craze and to shove away consumers from buying a ps2 and whether it failed or not,sega did tried what they could do to expand the life of the dreamcast,they just tried it🙏😁👍
