This video has 13,000 views but only about 600 likes. Many of the other excellent videos on Michael's channel, and on other channels that we vinyl enthusiasts enjoy, also have something like 10 to 20 times fewer likes than views. To those of you who regularly click the "like" button for videos you enjoy or find valuable, thanks for supporting Michael and these other content creators, which encourages them and makes it worthwhile for them to keep making videos. To those who watch the video but don't click "like," I respectfully ask that you consider that Michael and other content creators put a lot of time into these videos, and spend their own money on equipment to make the videos and of course purchase many of the records or other items they review with their own money. It only takes you a moment to click "like" to support the channel. Even if you don't love the video or don't agree with it, you can at least acknowledge the content creator for the time & resources he put into the video by clicking "like." I get a lot of value from the variety of quality videos on KZfaq, and even though there are some I don't agree with, I am happy they are there, because more variety of viewpoints and content is better for all of us. Thank you for considering this. Warmest regards, Ron C. Kenosha WI USA

Ahhh...back in the day.... doesn't seem that long ago that I was browsing LA area record stores and picking up nice, clean used LPs for .50 to $1.00 each, sometimes having to pay as much as $3-$5 for the really good stuff. Kids were bringing bags full of their parent's LPs in to trade for CDs. It was a fabulous time for vinyl collectors.

Anyone that likes classical music is still home and hosed, as far as cheap high quality old pressings go. I recently found three Argo pressings of mediaeval music in a used bookshop. Argo is basically Decca in disguise. One of the records seemed to be completely unplayed - at least, it showed no signs of having been played. These are some of the best sounding records I've found. Total cost: One australian dollar each. Then there was the time I got a mono Decca of Handels Water Music from 1953. It was in a three for five dollar bin. The guy said he couldn't divide five by three. So he gave it to me for free. Amazing sound and condition.

Yes, I agree, all the Decca sublabels like Argo or Oiseau-Lyre have the same quality as the Decca label itself, as it was all the same company and the same engineers and painstaking work. Even some very late Decca reissues from budget series like SPA (World of...) that were cheap new and are cheap today sound fantastic. Some of the very often excellent Lyritas were also recorded by Decca technicians.

Back in the early 80s we used to go to a record shop & we were purchasing American import albums for pennies, they had either the corners cut off the jacket or a slit in the jacket, I was a young teenager back then, years later I realised why they cut the jackets, those days are long gone, happiest days of my life spending all day in a warehouse full of records.

In the classical music sector there are even more great sounding LPs that cost almost nothing and are completely overlooked by audiophile-oriented collectors. I often wonder why people are ready to pay incredible sums for certain records but do not buy others that sound as good for far less money. I.e. I do not really wonder because the reason seems clear to me: some LPs were often mentioned by magazines and authorities in the hifi scene, others were not.

At the Analog Forum in Krefeld I gave a lecture about "forgotten" audiophile labels of the past in 2018 and 2019 and also played some of the LPs to an interested audience. For example small British labels like Merlin or Meridian or the French Lyrinx often had a fantastic sound and are really not expensive. I also presented some Scandinavian "insider tip" labels like Paula and Simax and many others - as much as was possible to squeeze into four hours.

I think that the albums released in the 70s which is the golden age of vinyl, when they made music on vinyl in the first place have this natural, analogue, smooth and warm sound. More groove, more depth, higher edges. Vinyls in the late 80s or 90s werent so good because of the production which was made loud, compressed, ideal for cd. But when you now buy classic album reissues they are remastered with care, sound very balanced, clean. They also are very cool. Of course I am talking about analogue remasters because I have a digital rip LP of „Laughning stock” and its nothing more than the cd which is dissapointing. I’ve compared Bowies „Heroes”, „Low” and „Ziggy Stardust” UK first pressings with the remasters and I love both. Great replicas of the original sleeves, great sound. I like the originals a little bit more but still its great that you can listen to both a natural sounding record and a HQ copy. I would also like to recommend „Deep Purple In rock” as an amazing sounding first press. I got mine cheap for like 10€ and it has crackles but the sound is powerful, the range of the sound is very wide, it has an amazing groove. This record is 53 years old and sounds killer!

Great selections! I need to get that Eye in the Sky OG. I have the I Robot. I canceled my One-Step. I had it preordered before the Digital news. I was so hoping it would meet all expectations, but the news hurt. I held onto my preordered, but finally cancelled due to amount of room, and one magical word, UHQR. If Chad’s kicking out these UHQRs, why not go with the best. My dad has the half-speed of Roxy Music Avalon, but I found a OG US pressing and it delivers with every listen. That album is magical. I also have an OG US of Siren. I bet the UK pressings are top though. Thanks for your fantastic videos and sharing your experiences with the world of vinyl. Enjoy the holiday season, and be rewarded everyday with fantastic OG pressings. I really like your focus with the OG videos. One question, what’s the prime year for German pressings? I love the German pressings in my collection. For a lot of the music that I like German or French pressings are the only way to get them.

Love Over Gold by Dire Straits sounds would be my pick, my OG Canadian pressing sounds amazing. I've been tempted to buy an audiophile pressing, but my copy sounds fine. For that and a Dutch pressing of Making Movies only cost £20-25. I know it cool to mock Dire Straits as dull, but those first four albums sound phenomenal, Mark Knopfler is an underrated lyricist. Brothers in Arms doesn't really have the same wow factor for me, and the last album was dull. Another OG pressing that sounds great is Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl. It's an album that I have mixed feelings about, but my UK pressing sounds amazing and it only cost a fiver.

Michael, you have to be very careful when saying ''country of origin'' for an original LP. There are a lot of UK artists who got their LPs mastered in the US. David Bowie's Let's Dance is a classic example. The LP was mastered in the US at Masterdisk by Robert Ludwig and is credited on the sleeve. The UK original pressing was cut by Nick Webb at The Penthouse, UK.

After over 50 years of collecting, I think I can make a blanket statement with few exceptions that _all_ original pressings are better than any reprints/remaster _whatevers._ The caveat being that some USA pressings weren't as good as British first pressings, mostly due to terrible vinyl and warps. I remember when the first half speed masters (Nautilus, CBS, MoFi) were coming out, I was _so_ disappointed at the general overall sound. Their one advantage being quieter vinyl. Now that I have an ultrasonic cleaner, I'm finding that even 50 year old well-worn records kill my recent reissues. BTW, in cleaning my collection and putting new cover protectors on, I'm removing the old original plastic sleeves with the prices on them. Talk about constant reminders!

Great recommendations. I'll check some out.. have you heard Linda Rondstadt and Arron Neville's album. "Cry Like The Rain, Howl Like the Wind". If not you must seek out an original usa pressing. Incredible album. I think it's her best. Her voice is unbelievable. Half the songs are written by Jimmy Webb. It's recorded with a 40 piece Orchestra and a 100 member choir. And they are cheap. Every track is sublime.

Actually here is one for starters Michael. Samara Joy "Linger Awhile" on Verve cut by RKS and pressed at Optimal. It is her 2nd album and a delightful modern jazz vocal performance. On sale in normal record stores for around €30 or so????

APP - Eye In The Sky OG UK pressing isn't cheap anymore sadly, not sure if its due to your videos but for a while there weren't any on sale on Discogs (which has never happened before) and now there's only two available with prices starting from €28. This used to be a £5 - 10 record but it seems it is now selling for twice that and they're not even NM copies but standard VG+ ones.

The only thing that puts me off is the snap crackle and pop you get on older vinyl even after it’s been deep cleaned. So you may get a better sound stage but you almost have to accept trading that for crackles etc. sometimes it’s not bad when loud but can be heard between tracks etc.

There is no general rule to this. Some are noisy, some are dead quiet. This is really a kind of lottery. Although there are of course some tendencies with labels that were and are known for good tovery good or rather poor pressing quality.

Hallo Michael, I have one question. Could you make a video also in your German chanel about Japanese pressings? When I started buying LPs in the 80ies, I was always fascinated by the sound of Japanese pressings, I could buy in Germany. In comparison with the thin German pressings or with origin from central and northern european countries, I was always fascinated by the full dynamic HiFi-sound of LPs from Japanese manufacturing plants. Not only MFSL pressings from JVC! I was in most cases shocked, what poor quality you could hear from any German pressing. They generally definitely have no bass, no punch and tend to distortions. On the heavy US pressings and on pressings from for example Italy or Portugal, you could get the full analog sonic sound, I like so much. I wonder, how much you can recommend German (first) pressings, I probably have bought in the 80ies many first pressings by chance, but I could not hear real Hifi sound. When I had a Japanese pressing on my record player, I discovered how good the recording could sound. Full dynamic stereo with deep bass and punch. In comparison to this an ordinary "German quality pressing" was like a bootleg. Just an example: James Bond soundtracks on the United Artists label, pressed by King Records in Japan, that offers real dynamic and sound stage. The same titles on EMI Electrola from Cologne. Horrible! There is no punch, everything seems to be reproduced in a bonsai style. Blue Note Records pressings from Japan. Same experience. Sometimes I can read by younger persons, that Japanese pressings have a brilliant but thin sound. I always made the opposite experience. What do you think about this topic? Gruß Martin

Nice, two Roxy Music recommendations. What about "Country Life"
@slidetek

Any of the original Roxy's are better than the new half speed masters. Roxy came out of the gate with stellar production values, something that rubbed off on Bryan Ferry from Eno. Country Life might be my favorite from Roxy, switching positions with For Your Pleasure. I have all the original pressings, and bought 2 of the half speeds just to see. They're good, no doubt, but sound laid back in comparison.

Michael, how does anyone get to send you an album? In your previous video Susan Tedeschi got mentioned. Never heard of her, but was curious. Her band has some great live videos on KZfaq. They also have a 4 album set out now that you can buy individually - I Am The Moon: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6yShcVip8CvgZ8.html

In my experience, and to be clear I am by no means an expert, I rarely find something so atrocious that I can't listen to it. One example, I have an older pressing of Trouble's "Plastic Green Head" that was really awful. I got the Hammerheart repress and that was light years ahead. The same could be said for my Stooges "Raw Power" from Sundazed. I got the Sony reissue with the Bowie and Pop mixes that smokes that one. Now where I am in NJ, I get a lot of used vinyl that just needs a little cleaning and it sounds great. I suppose this is what you make of it. Not to say this information isn't valuable, it is. But I think people come into this hobby and set unrealistic expectations. It is subjective.

When the Elvis Costello Get Happy came out I was in the import wholesale record business and I have a box of them. The Fbeat first press and I disagree about its sound quality. There is just too much music on all the sides. Lacks depth and dynamics. When I listen to this record I put on the cd

I've found reissues a waste of money. They sound a tad 'better' on some points. I have 3000 lps going back to 1973. Waa always anal on cleaning n care. Reissues are more for newbies

It is sometimes also a price issue. For example some original Krautrock LPs have become very expensive today.
