I sort mine into categories, such as clothes, misc, letters/receipts and then go through them one category at a time that way I don't get overwhelmed and only focus on each category at a time and then after I've completed them all then noticing how much I've done :') also I only keep birthday cards and Christmas cards from loved ones that are the last birthday or important birthdays such as 18, 21 etc and the only cards I keep that are every year are from people who are going to pass soon such as my nan, it keeps me from hoarding loads of cards but also having them if any family or friends happen to pass away so I have an item to reflect on, I keep all of these in a business file in the loft, that way they're not cluttering my mental space constantly but they're there if I feel I need to look at them, although I am getting more interested in the whole photograph memento photobooks concept people keep mentioning :') but then I don't want to hoard loads of photo albums over time so idk what to do 🤔

tip number 11: take your time to declutter
@user-ii5jh2ch2i4 жыл бұрын
@@igshwote985 Yes, that is a great tip. I always take my time to do most things, not only decluttering. I believe in slow living - best way to go. But it is easy for me as I recently retired. Am 67. Have a good week.

One of my decluttering tips is to think "If I didn't have this and saw it in the store, would I buy it?" Also, something I said to my (very non-minimalist) mom while shopping recently was "You can admire without having to acquire." Just because something is beautiful or unique or interesting doesn't mean you need it in your life every day. I'll take a picture of an interesting find (I love browsing antique stores) if I don't want to buy the item and that's good enough for me

Best tip to myself: stop watching decluttering vids and start decluttering :-)
@Debbiesdilemmas4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been the watching Sophia at “My Great Challenge. She has a really great idea this year. She has written down small decluttering jobs that she needs to do in her home. They are for the most part small jobs....ie. cleaning out a drawer, pantry, fridge, etc. She has written them on small post it notes and then folded them and put them in a jar. She videos all of these jobs and in every video she picks out a random job without looking first. Whatever the job is she does it that day. This way you are not confined to one room until it’s finished. You can complete small jobs throughout your home and you will start to see progress all over. This especially works for me as I tire easily. I am writing down jobs that will take me 10-20 minutes. When I complete a job if I feel like I can do more and have the time then I will. By doing it this way I don’t feel overwhelmed and know I will be able to accomplish each task. Sophia is calling this her D.O.C. (Declutter, organize and clean) challenge. So far I am seeing a lot of success and feel very motivated to keep going. With you and other youtubers I have plenty of inspiration and motivation. Thank you!😊❤️

The collection thing is really important, and a stumbling block for many in how some minimalist writers / KZfaqrs put it across. Yes, collections are fine, as long as you're selective what you collect. Most KZfaq minimalists would be horrified at the thought that I'm minimising my guitar collection down to 16. But (a) that's significantly less than the 35 it started at, and (b) I play and teach guitar for a living, so these are tools I need to do my job. They do bring me joy, and they do add value to my life. As you rightly said, the minimalist path is different for everyone. It's just about having enough. Happy Chinese New Year!

Thanks, your tips are so practical. In my own experience, I have some books which have the authors' autographs. I would surely keep them on my bookshelf. But for those which have been sitting on the shelf for years and I would definitely not turn a page for the coming year or two, send them to second hand shops or friends. Same as DVD, I have loads of them, and I sent away those which I have viewed for many times and have no particular fondness.

Decluttering needs time. Maybe you need months or years for it until you reach your personal goal. I try to do it bit by bit and for me its the easiest way. When I move I'll use it as a chance to really take the stuff with me I really want and need. Its the best, easiest and fastest way to declutter but not everyone is going to move. I have to when I go to university so I'll try.
@CKSPACE4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Marc. That's one important point which is time and agree that moving out is one of the best opportunity to let go of things. All the best on your journey to the university.

Thanks for sharing your tips! Can you make a video on how to take "artistic minimalist pictures" of the sentimental things we plan to let go? It would help a people alot. One of the reasons I can't get rid of my collections is that I take crappy pictures that I'd rather keep them than be stuck with an ugly picture of them.
