I figured I'd release this video, showing a variety of Daniel Wellington alternative watches and watches better than MVMT.

@@hicturbaest Let's see: round face, colour, markers round the outside,couple of hands... yep, definitely a stolen design. No other watch has ever had those ideas in their look and feel.
@hicturbaest
@hicturbaest 3 жыл бұрын
@@interestedbystander196 The design comes very close to Nomos´, there are also other players with similar design traits. The Nomos Tagente design was initially stolen from fellow german watchmaker Stowa. But go into split-screen, and scroll through Nomos lineup (focus on the Neomatik line) and keep a picture of the Casio on the side. You will soon notice that the Bauhaus-styling, overall layout, and applied indices every five minutes come shockingly close to the Nomos Orion Neomatik ref. 392 (link: nomos-glashuette.com/de/orion/orion-neomatik-392?number=392#). Case shape, dial layout, markers and indices, even the bright orange/red small seconds hand at 6 o´clock. Virtually the only differences are the non-oxidized hands and slightly bolder, Tangente-styled lugs. I have no doubt Casio makes great watches, neither am I one to dispute upon an original design - but this Casio doesn't have one.

Nice to see Timex being presented as a better alternative to a Daniel Wellington. There's an old US TV Timex advert on youtube, that demonstrated the build quality of a Timex. They fixed a Timex 'Marlin' (a cheap watch at the time) to an arrow head (to the head, not the shaft) and got an archer with a long bow to shoot it through a pain of glass that had a tank of water behind it. The bow was drawn fully, so that the arrow flew with maximum velocity, with the watch (not the arrow head) smashing through the glass and landing in the water, with a fantastic crash. The watch had no signs of damage and was still working perfectly. I'd love to see a Daniel Wellington try that stunt.

I have never had a Casio (and I've owned a LOT of them) that disappointed me. The very cheapest and first (bought fourteen years ago) is STILL going on its original supposedly eight year life battery. Most of the digitals I would prefer to have bigger numbers (getting old now), but they are all tough as old boots, even the non G-Shocks. You can't go wrong with a Casio.

Great lessons to be learned here, and I wish young people would watch this video. As a Swede I'm of course sorry for the behalf of my country that the DW watches are recognized as a Swedish brand. On the positive side though, there's so much affordable alternatives to all these non-affordable (and often crappy) fashion watches, and you bring up some really great ones. I wasn't aware of that Braun model, that looked quite interesting. Braun is for me a brand that makes (like many Japanese brands) various house hold gadgets, but wasn't aware of them making watches as well. Braun is actually also mentioned several times in one of William Gibsons classic sci-fi nóvels (Mona Lisa Overdrive, maybe? Could be wrong) as some tool/gadget that the protagonist use.

I own the 2nd gen version 1 with a white face and gold case and a dark brown strap, which is really beautiful. I also own a Burei as mentioned, but all black and mesh strap. For me, any watch from a watchmaking brand is a better alternative to DW. I would take a £15 Timex over a DW any day.

Can you make an updated vid of this? I was interested in the casio sapphire but i can't find any stock on it. I believe that it has been discontinued.

You can never go wrong with a casio, they're a fantastic watch maker, better than anything Daniel Wellington or Mvmt will ever make and at a similar if not cheaper price.

You might also want to consider Seagull watches. These are unabashedly Chinese (China Made at the bottom of the dial) and of quite decent quality. I have one 9mm thick automatic from this company that has stayed within +/- 3 seconds per day for two years now. Watches don't get much more "minimal" with a white dial with the brand name and only a seconds track around the periphery with numerals at each 5 second mark. Their movements are used by many Chinese manufacturers, and I have heard that they are the world's largest manufacturer of mechanical watch movements.

Hi Ben, how about doing a video on some solar fashion-style watches similar to DW? Putting in a battery every two years does get old quickly, and expensive, too.

I got this automatic Tissot Time teller, I think is what it's called. But it looks like those and it was only $150. I love it so far. More than my more expensive watches actually. Tissot is official. I think this one pretty much guaranteed that I'm getting a PRX next. Highly suggest anything Tissot you can get your hands on.

A Junghans Max Bill (quartz version) is a great affordable alternative as well.

That's a nice watch too, just a lot more money than these others. I'd love to see a comparison of the Junghans and the Junkers, I like both of those

Alternatively, go no AliExpress and buy the self same watch but with a different branding (or none at all) for anything from £3 to £15. It's hard to get the SKMEI 1181 any more, though it's still on Gearbest.

Here is a great looking minimalist watch from Casio that looks good, costs less, and will probably last longer: Casio MTP VT01L. Actually this is a series of watches of different color and slight variations. Enjoy.

l missed one major flaw of the Orient Bambino(though still in my opinion major). It has a 21mm strap, which is overall more expensive to buy, since it's more rare. But also if you're into getting more watches, you're basically stuck with straps that you can only use on your Orient Bambino.

Skagen? They are budget friendly and love their designs, I think in the middle of Braun and DW.

Don't buy a Chinese made braun, there are ALOT of horror stories about how cheap they are and how often they break down. I bought a use skagen for $50, mainly because I loved it's blue grey sunburst dial and yellow band. It is also 8mm and it's construction great, as good as my seiko's dress watches.

My top 10 (cheap) alternatives to DW: 1. City clock tower 2. Asking strangers what time it is 3. Stick putted in ground, on a sunny day 4. Two jars with sand, acting like an hourglass 5. Actual hourglass 6. Counting seconds in your mind 7. Guessing time, based on your hunger 8. Observing when McD's stopped serving breakfasts 9. Pure guess 10. Observing Sun position in the sky
